Online Sales Shutting Down Retail Sales

E-Commerce Overtaking Retail Stores is no joke.

Retail stores are being impacted by the online sales success of the internet.

Just as the internet has created the home based business opportunity so has it created success online for the multi-million dollar corporations.

The business world is in flux and the evidence is becoming more apparent.

Staples Canada Shuts Down 15 Retail Stores

Staples Canada closes another 15 retail locations at the end of September 2014. While another 60 retail locations will be closing throughout the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2014.

Office supply retailers are fighting a losing battle, in-store sales are slumping as more orders move online.

Rivals such as Grand & Toy and Office Depot are doing the same, closing their retail stores and moving their business online.

E-Commerce is the Future

It’s not that there isn’t any business but e-commerce is the retail stores biggest enemy.

E-Commerce is not only dictating and dominating it is also impacting the employment rates in the U.S. and Canada.

As there are more and more online shopping sites there will be fewer people needed to serve the customer in a store environment. No physical store means no physical jobs.

The future of retail sales and employment is in flux.

E-Commerce is Booming

E-Commerce is booming , sales will continue to grow but we still need customer service.

The jobs that are being created are in the call centers and distribution centers. Everything is over the phone or website.

Unfortunately online stores are reducing employment opportunities within many communities.

There is a tremendous transition going on, the convenience and selection of online shopping is a driving force behind the world of employment. We the consumer are the driving force behind this change and now we must find ways of creating new opportunities for ourselves.

Opportunities for the Online Entrepreneur

Open up to the new world of the internet. Technology has made it easier for everyone to create their own internet business opportunity.

There are communities of people out there that are creating their own websites and blogs, using the internet to their advantage.

You don't have to go back to school, you can begin your journey building a future, a new home based business opportunity online.

E-Commerce is the future and transitioning into that new world is not as hard as you think.

In a way it's sad because it's another way society is closing itself off, and jobs disappear. On the other hand it's an exciting opportunity for people like us. Good article.

Yes on one hand we lose out on the actual store but we gain through the online store. I still prefer going to check things out at a store and I'm a terrible shopper. Hate shopping really but when I do, I like going to a store. But then again, the internet now is the only place I can find very unique products..too bad. Opportunity for us...definitely, so no complaints...

I guess I'm a hypocrite for even bringing it up because I do most of my shopping online... even when I lived in the 'burbs and there were tons of stores, I hated going because they were crowded.

Well really that is the price (no pun intended) with progress and change. There's the good and the bad, yet that very same progress and change can continue and who knows what will become of it. I think though online shopping will continue to grow there will be a bit of a surge for the small shops to return. Here where we call the Danforth in the east end of Toronto I have seen some small store popping up. So maybe in time that will grow too...would be nice. And I cannot stand the crowds in stores either....

Great post and so very true. A stunning example is with Atlantic City, NJ. I know this isn't retail but illustrates that people would rather do things at home from their computer than to go out to a brick and mortar business.

Last year, internet gambling was legalized in the state of NJ. This year, a number of casinos in Atlantic City have been forced to close their doors, including Trump's Taj Mahal. It unfortunately has left thousands unemployed in the state. Hopefully someone will buy up those glorious buildings and find other ways to utilize them and provide work to all those former casino employees!

Excellent blog. The only thing I would critique is you don't mention any sources. But the information bodes well for us at WA. Thank you for sharing.

That was one of the reason I have been trying for over 3 years to get into online marketing. It was getting noticeable to me that E-Commerce was suffering here and there.
Thank you for sharing.
Kim :))

I've read a lot of stats on this. Gas prices are one reason. Online retailers who offer free shipping are seeing a huge increase in sales. Even if the price is a little higher, most people like the delivery. They say if you can only do one thing to improve your sales, offer free shipping. Plus, if you go to Walmart, they may not have your size/color/other preference. But if you order from Walmart.com, you'll get what you need in a couple of days. And Walmart does free shipping at $50, I believe. These days, $50 isn't hard to spend.
