After living in North Yorkshire for nearly the past 10 weeks, today we've moved on to the next petsit, closer to home.

The George W Bush connection

Actually, we have a day in between, so last night we stayed in a pub (The Dun Cow) in the village of Sedgefield. This was the place our then Prime Minister, Tony Blair, brought George W Bush when he visited the UK in 2003. Great food too!

Sedgefield is an ancient village, with a nice church on the green, opposite the pub, and several hostelries to choose from, from the relatively cheap (Dun Cow) to Boutique level expensive (The Impeccable Pig) .

Only 2 sits in 10 weeks

Our first summer sit in Yorkshire began on 18th July in a little village called Thornton Steward, with a Golden Retriever, "Medlar". We stayed with him for roughly a month. He was fantastic, playful and just a bit daft. We also had 10 chickens to look after there, along with Moorhens (not really pets, but we fed them too).

We finished there on 16th August, and moved a short five miles or so up the road to the Village of Middleham.

Middleham is very well known in the area as a Racehorse town. The village is built around the ruin of Middleham Castle (see header image) which was the former home of King Richard III. There are only about 850 residents, but around 650 horses too!

Horse Racing with Richard III

The village is famous for its Racing Stables, training the thoroughbred animals for racing events around the country and the World. The equine influence is inescapable there. The horses are like supermodels, they know they are superior to ordinary nags.

There are also 3 pubs in the village, all serving quality Real Ale, so we sampled a few. It seemed rude not to. πŸ˜‚

We were spending 6 weeks in the company of this little scamp, a Cocker Spaniel named "Roscoe". He is good as gold in the house, but goes quite mad off the leash in the field. He needs to get rid of his energy though, and this the best way to let him do it. Typical Spaniel.

40 articles written

Spending all that time in the beautiful countryside with these two pets gave me plenty of time to write, and I reckon i've finished around 40 articles for my website in that time.

As i've said before, petsitting is an ideal lifestyle for anyone doing 'this sort of thing', as there's plenty of opportunity to write and be inspired, whether it be by goofy dogs barking and chasing birds 200 feet up above them, or walking around the old castle belonging to a King who archaeologists eventually found buried under a car park in Leicester!

Be Rich and varied.

Don't spend all your time sat behind your computer. Get outside and be inspired. You may even find a new niche or two for yourself :- Petsitting, Medieval History, Equine Supplies and Care, Walking spring to mind as something I could base a blog around from this alone.

This afternoon we start our next sit, for a gentle little Pouchon named "Pippa" for two weeks. A relaxing sit this one (she doesn't walk far at all and prefers life as a lapdog).

I'll be very disappointed if I don't manage to craft another 10 articles while we're with Pippa. She's very easy-going and no bother at all. After Pippa is a little Jack Russell named "Pixie", then we'll be back off to Spain. 😎

Dave.

Beautiful dogs, Dave!

We have a Golden Retriever named Lucy, she is absolutely the best!
Enjoy your petsitting, it sounds like a great gig!

And way to go on the article writing!

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim, thanks for your comment. Retrievers are pretty special aren't they? Pretty nuts too at times. But we love them.

40 articles was good going, I think I was at my creative peak. I wish Google was more helpful to us, but hey ho.

Dave

You are filling a real need -- so often, it's hard to leave the four-legged family member because there is no good way to take care of him while you are gone. Keep it up!

The food looks good...

It's expensive too. You can easily double the cost of your holiday if you have to kennel your dogs while you are away. It also stresses them out.

Dave

Hi Dave ,
such a cool post, and a nice way to live by the sounds of it! I have spent time up that way with my friend in Brierley just outside Barnsley, we used to frequent many such pubs for the odd libation or 2!

Rob

It is a cool way to live. It's like moving house every few weeks, without all the hassle of moving all your furniture!

Dave

Awwww, how sweet this is, Dave!

I'm an animal lover, having many dogs, cats and horses, plus ducks and rabbits, etc.

Enjoy :)

Teri

We love it Teri. We get to see some great places, look after some lovely animals, and I also get lots of work done 😎

Dave

Hi Dave!

Very cool way to secure housing and enjoy the four-legged friends!

Do you still have your house in Durham, or do you go from petsit to petsit?

Cute pics of the dogs!

Yes, the Trusted House Sitters website membership allows us to trade our care for the pets for accommodation. It works well. We still have the house in Durham, but we only go back occasionally. We rent it out on Airbnb while we travel.

Dave

That is a great idea! I found the website. I need to see if we can combine RVing with this.

Let me know if you can and i'll send you a discount link

Dave

Congratulations on getting your life to a more manageable pace.
Sami

It's going great at the minute thanks Sami. πŸ˜†

Dave

Hey Dave. In my life, northern pubs have been the friendliest places on earth, I'm just a little jealous.
;-)
Richard

There were 2 pubs, then a 3rd one opened while we were there! Nice food too. 😎
