I'm at the stage where I'm looking at purchasing a domain. I am based in the UK and am not sure whether it is better to get a .co.uk or .com domain. If anyone can give me some

It is going to be better if you can do a .com that is what most people go to when searching.

Hello David, the most popular domain endings are .com, .org or .net. I live in Canada and .ca is always available but for a larger audience it is recommended to go with one of the more popular.

someone else was looking at a ca site for canada earlier - advised them against it due to google local ranking - your uk site will rank well in uk but not in other parts of the wrld - so is your business worldwide or local to the uk?
Why start at a disadvantage when it costs nothing extra - and you may truggle to get it hosted here!
google autocompletes site name with com so again why disadvantage yourself?
Your choice
Phil

I personally would do a .com

I personally prefer to go with .com which is more for world wide. .uk is more local

And .com is what most people are used to see and would type in.

Just my opinion

Who are you targeting? Specifically uk or global? If specifically uk, go with co.uk. If global, I'd get the .com.

Well in theory a global audience. But this leads me onto another question - if I promote a product, say, on Amazon, would I include a link to the Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk site? It seems to me that having a $ price would be of course more global, but UK visitors might be put off by the fact it is not £ (perhaps I could have information on both $ and £?)

Sorry for the additional questions, just thinking on the fly.

Amazon one link allows you to join both the .com and .uk affiliate programs and your visitors will be directed to the correct one upon clicking your link

Didn't know that, thanks for the info!

Fair question. Honestly I'm not a fan of Amazon. Too many people never earn anything because of their one-day cookie.

oh, that's not great. What are your preferred 'big' retailers? Or do you just go with smaller, less well known programs?

I go with a combination of both big and smaller. That way you can have products that are not on Amazon (often better, definitely different and not overly promoted). Commission rates are often much higher and cookies much longer. Tell me your vertical and I'll give you some examples.

My website is for providing all sorts of gift ideas for car lovers and automotive enthusiasts. I aim to help save people time by collating all my ideas into categories on my website (E.g Clothing, Books, Toys, Video games, Practical car gifts etc.) I realise I will need to do some research on affiliate programs for some of the more niche ideas, but that's part of the fun. If you have suggestions for the more generic items then that would be great!

Oh yes, I have suggestions!

I'm sending you a message with links to the programs for Ferrari.com, Etsy.com and Newfrog.com. Much more fun than Amazon!
