This is the second installment of this subject. Please review How Do You Engage Your Readers Part 1.

Many of you commented about different things that you do to engage your readers and bring them into your writing. I encourage you to expand this technique for all of your writing projects whether it is a blog, article, or even an email.

The main goal should be to make the individual reader feel that you are writing just to them and that you are simply having a conversation with them.

Help your reader to become active in your writing. Here are some ways that this can be accomplished.

1. Understand who your reader is and where they are coming from.

How can you have a conversation with someone if you don't know who they are and where they are? Take the time to profile your ideal visitor and detail as much as you can about their demographics.

2. Write good content that makes the reader want to come back again and again.

This is a no-brainer. Create suspense; ask open-ended questions that require essay responses instead of yes or no responses to answer the questions. Give them teasers about upcoming topics. When someone does leave a comment, answer it quickly and continue the conversation with them whenever possible. Try to remember that others are reading your response so try to bring them into the discussion. Here is an example: "That is a great question, Donna". "Here is how I would do it; _____". "Does anyone else have any additional information to help Donna out"?

3. Mention other sources and other bloggers in your material if it helps answer your reader's questions or it backs up what you are saying.

I am doing work in the health niches of weight loss, nutrition, and diabetes. I use references to published medical journals and other professional sources to validate my comments. If you use another blogger's comments or mention their blog as a reference then contact them and let them know that you did so and why. They may, in turn, mention you and cite your information. Now your site and blog is being shared to a whole new group of people that you did not have access to before.

4. Increase the frequency of your content and your comments when there is active participation.

Monitor your content and if people are responding then increase your participation to further fuel interest and participation. Allow the conversation to develop and respond accordingly.

5. Add some different types of content.

Consider adding video or guest interviews about your niche or blog subject. There may be others here at WA who are experts in certain areas that would be willing to do an interview. Ask them. If they agree then type out the questions and responses and add it to your blog. Break up the interview into parts and promote the upcoming segments. If you have your own video or even someone else's to add then this gives you more exposure and it offers variety to your reader. If the video is someone else's, just make sure that you have the proper permission to use it.

There will be another part to this subject in the next few days.

I look forward to hearing from you about what you have just learned. Feel free to answer the following questions. Remember that the more we share, the more we learn.

1. Have you implemented any of these ideas on your sites and blogs?

2. If so, then how was the response?

3. Do you have any additional information about what you have just learned that would be helpful to the WA community?

Thanks for reading and remember:

Hey Dave,
I have been following you on this little series! I have bookmarked them to refer to them since my brain is not able to remember all anymore! lol
I think you have great suggestions, and I will have to work on open-ended questions. I seem to struggle with those.
I start out my blogs focused on my readers and then somewhere along the way I am teaching not interacting with them.
I will be working hard on this!
Thanks
Sheila

Hi Sheila, Thanks for the comments. You could try writing your article and then go back and see where you could change something to an open-ended question. Just a thought. Talk to you soon. Dave.

Thanks, Dave, I will try that!
Sheila

Let me know how it goes. Dave.

Thanks, Dave, you are always right on. You are absolutely right in saying at the end, "I am a Writer."

Thanks Wayne

Good post with solid advice; imagining the reader's perspective, trying to keep it interesting, reasonable updates and posts.
Number 3, mentioning other bloggers helpful info on posts is also good advice I've been employing for some time.

Thank you for your comments. Please read part 1 if you have not already done so. Dave.

LOVE it mate

thanks Paul
