Facebook Security Guide
Facebook security is oft times overlooked. Considering the time and effort you are putting into social media platforms to promote your online business this should not be ignored.
Hey Y'all,
I have had an incredible day in cyber land today steadily working away. Hope yours has been as well. If you hadn't guessed this post will help you install Fort Knox type security on your Facebook account.
Facebook Security Guide
Before we get into the Facebook security settings let's go to the general settings and check your password. Are you using the same password for all your accounts? Are you using a family member's name. YES, your dog or cat is a family member.
I have been guilty of this in the past. It is not a good thing. If they hack one password they have access to all your accounts. If you are going to do this make it a strong password.
Norton by Symantec has a free password generator and a free Identity Safe tool to store your new passwords. The password generator is very customizable.
OK sorry got off track a bit back to the point. Once you have dealt with your password in the general settings let's move to the security tab. There are several important security items to add to your account.
Let's start with Login Alerts. If someone was using your Facebook I.D. or password to access your account that would be a good thing to know right? In this area you can set notifications to be sent to your phone and email whenever your account is accessed from a new computer or mobile device.
If your are notified of an unknown login you should follow the steps outlined to secure your account. At the start this will be a bit of a pain.
The first time you access your account from a new browser, device, or location Face book will send you a notification. Simply click save location and you won't be notified again for that particular instance. Do not save if this is a public or friends computer. You might know your friend, but do you know and trust all of their friends?
Login Approvals
Login approvals is Facebook's security answer to the Two-Factor Authentication method. it adds one more layer of security. Each time you log in from a new device you will be required to add a verification code.
Once again this is for the first login from a new location. There are 3 ways to generate codes in this panel. One good one to take advantage of is the “Get codes to use when you don’t have your phone.”. This option will generate 10 codes you can use if your phone is not available or has no reception. Print the list or write it down and keep it handy and secure.
There are a few other useful tabs in the security panel.
The "Where you're logged in" tab is good to check if you have been accessing your account from public computers. If you forget to logout when finished anyone can access your account. in this panel you can delete and close that location from anywhere.
If you employ these simple Facebook security measures you can be secure in the knowledge that your account will be almost secure as Fort Knox.
Until next time,
