Eat The BIG One First
Hey Y'all,
Hope every one had a great day! Or will have a great day. With friends here from around the world it is hard to qualify. What ever time it is in your neck of the woods hope all is going well for you.
Are you just starting your work time? (whether it be day or night) Do you have your list made out? What ... no list? I think that might be making a mistake. I am big list guy. A list gives me direction to my day so I am not starting here just to go over there and not accomplishing much.
When I had my small construction company the dash of my pickup was covered with tablets that all contained lists. Finding the one I needed at the time....well that was another story. Perhaps I should have put "organize lists" on my list.
I have 4 list stuck right above my monitor. One list is what I want to accomplish today. One that has goals for the week. On another goals for the month. And the last one is where I want to end up.On that sandy beach without a care in the world. This one has no time frame to it, it really doesn't need one. If I work on the small lists the big one will take care of itself.
My wife has one also that says "I love you" which she occasionally she takes down and tapes right on the monitor
Starting your day off with a list can help you be more productive and allow you to get as much as you can out of the time you have to work. Remember you are working for your future not some one else's. Make your time count.
I like to start my list with the largest or hardest task. Well I guess I should say I try to start my day accomplishing the task I like least. There are still things that need to be done almost on a daily basis that I don't enjoy. In that way the rest of the chores on the list seem easy. Like Mark Twain said "eat the biggest one first".
I am a paper and pencil guy but there are many other options available. I know many people use white boards. I can see an advantages to this method. One it might save a tree, and I hear sniffing the dry markers is fun. Again I don't know. I tried sniffing my pencil once that didn't work out to well.
Sorry. Back to the point. There are Excel spread sheets to help with this. We all have smart phones most have list capabilities. I haven't researched them but I would bet there are at least 50 programs on the internet. And if all else fails a good old sheet of paper and a #2 pencil will do the trick.
That is another thing I have always wondered about. If the #2 pencil is the best pencil to use, why is it still #2? Hmmmm
If you aren't using a list I would hope you consider doing so. Try it and see if there is an increase in your productivity. If you are using a list (and I hope you are) and have the time please share your method below. It might help others out. And if you are not I would be interested in knowing why. I am always open to learning new things.
I would like to leave you with one last quote from Mark Twain a bit off topic but if kept in mind could make things better for every one yourself included.

I love the quote. My hardest tasks of the day are also usually tackled first. That way I'm not too worried about losing to much energy to soon
I agree Tim, doing tasks that seem overwhelming always become easier when I get them out of my head and put down on paper in smaller piecesb and then just jump right into it.

That is a good question Chris glad you asked. I did extensive research for this post. I was distraught over the thought of the poor legless frogs. They do indeed fit the disfigured creatures for wheelchairs. It is on the internet it has to be true!
