3 Easy Steps For Getting Your First Amazon Sale

I recently shared a training with my customers to help them get their first Amazon sales, and wanted to share the same concepts with you all here too.

For those of you who aren't aware, when you first join Amazon you get 90 (or it might be 180 now) days to make your first sale, and if you don't get it in that time, you get kicked out of the Amazon affiliate program.

When this happens, it's not the end of the world, as you can re-apply, but it's pretty disconcerting and some people throw in the towel at this point.

The real downside of organic traffic is that it takes time. Once you're getting regular Google visitors you will be fine, but what do you do in the meantime? It's easy for me, because I know the process works, but for first timers, you really need a sign that you can make money.

So I put together a quick training so I could help my customers in 2 ways:

1.) Get that first sale so they didn't get the Amazon ban.

2.) Get that first sale so they could feel pumped and keep on rocking!

Another thing I noticed is that one reason people tend to give up is because they don't see results fast enough, so if I could address two main quitting points with one training, it was going to be win-win.

Long story short, I decided I should share a summary of that training with you guys, because I'm sure there are many of you in the same situation.

In this post, I'm going to teach you three steps that will let you:

  1. Make your first sale, without relying on Google traffic
  2. Repeat the strategy again and again to bring more traffic and sales

Step One - Find Forums In Your Niche

I guess this is quite funny since the last training I published was about forums as well, but this one requires very different steps. You're not going to steal forum keywords this time, you're going to register for them instead!

Here's what I want you to do:

  1. Find 10 Forums in your niche. A subreddit is ok too. "Niche + Forum" is a great thing to type into Google to get started.
  2. Sign up for an account with those forums. Make 5 of the accounts "you", as in you the author of your site, and make the other 5 random names. We want to see what persona works best.
  3. Don't fill in the "website" section of your profile if it gives you the option, but definitely fill everything else in. Write your bio, add a picture etc. You want to make it seem like you are just a genuine person interested in the topic. Don't allude to the fact you own an affiliate site in the niche though. You'll see why later.
  4. Over the next week, join in with the forum. Read a few posts, comment on some of them if you think you have something useful to add, and definitely look for the "introduce yourself here" thread as well.

What you're doing with step 4 is making your profile more authentic, and also letting it "age".

Many forums don't let you create your own posts or add links to posts until you have a certain post count or until your account is a certain age. If you can find out what the requirements are for your forum, make a note of this in a spreadsheet somewhere and make sure you meet those requirements.

What we're going to do in Step Three requires you to have an authentic looking account that isn't going to get banned or deleted when you make a post, so it's important not to skip this step.

Don't go overboard though. Just comment on a few threads and let time pass. If you come in and start commenting "nice work" on 10 posts in day 1, the forum moderators will wise up.

We're going to move away from Forums for Step Two, but keep doing these things over the next week or so.

Step Two - Facebook Groups

While we wait for our Forum accounts to age and get the post count up, we're going to play with Facebook in the meantime.

Here's what I want you to do:

  1. Join as many FB groups in your niche as you can. As long as they have over 300 members and English is the main language.
  2. Read the rules to make sure posting questions is allowed.
  3. Post a question as a "beginner who wants to know what product to buy" and link to an article on your site. Here's an example that you can edit:

Hey guys,

Looks like a really helpful group here. I hope you can help!

I've been interested in {niche} for a while now and have been looking to buy a {product related to your niche}, but I'm not sure what is the best one to buy. I was doing some research on this site (link to an article on your site) and can't decide between {product A} or {product B}.

Does anyone here own either of them? What was your experience? Would you recommend any?

Thanks!

Now, it's important that you don't let people know this is your site, so if your name is on the site or something, remove it before you do this post.

Some people in the FB groups will know what you are doing and will criticise you, but just roll with it. Other groups will be really helpful and will give you some solid advice.

What really matters is that people in the group will click your article to read what's written, and some of them will then click your Amazon links too. There will be other beginners in the FB groups along with you, so there's a good chance someone clicks through and buys something.

Remember, you get paid by Amazon for ANYTHING they buy, so at this time of year, just getting people to Amazon is enough to get a sale.

Don't worry too much if people say the website is rubbish or the article is wrong. FB groups are full of know-it-alls. Take their feedback on board, but don't let it get you down. Move on!

Step Three - Let's Go Back To Forums

By now you should have got some accounts in forums that are qualified for posting links in. Great!

This could be a week after step one, or it could be a month, or just a few days. It depends on the rules of the individual forum.

Once your account is "aged" and you know you'll be able to add links to topics, let's do the following:

  1. Search for a topic in the forum like "best {product} for beginners" or anything that is related to an article on your site. If nothing exists, create a new topic.
  2. Post a similar question to the one you did in Facebook.

Given that you might be replying to a forum topic instead of a FB group, you should change the intro slightly to say something like "wow, great discussion here..can I chime in with a question?"

Again, some people will know what you are doing, other people will be really helpful.

The main thing to consider is that people WILL visit your site, and some people might buy something.

Bonus - Scale It!

Now even though this strategy is designed to get you your first sale, there's no reason why you can't scale it and do this more and more.

Here are some simple ways to scale:

  1. Do the exact same steps as before, but look for more forums and FB groups.
  2. In the previous forums and FB groups, post ANOTHER question about a different product. Something like "Hey guys, you were a big help before, so now I have a question about another product..I was reading this article and..." you get the idea.
  3. Use the same forums and FB groups but create fresh accounts. This will probably require you to use different IP addresses and you'll obviously want to be more creative about how you link to your site, or it will be obvious you're the same person.

Over time, you should be able to have quite a few posts bringing you traffic and sales, and this list can only get bigger as you do it more and more. Make sure you're not spamming, and make sure you are appearing authentic, and you will definitely get some results.

Later on, once your site is getting more and more traffic from Google, you can stop doing the forum method if you find it too time consuming.

You'll probably still get traffic from the previous work though!

Thanks for the insightful article.

No prob!

Excellent training on ways to get your first Amazon sale. I wish this were around when I first signed up for the Amazon affiliate program. Needless to say I didn't get my first sale and was kicked out. That was quite awhile ago though and I'm definitely ready to try it again and hopefully get accepted again. I will definitely give what you listed above, a try.

Yeah it's a pretty common problem, really hope it works for you!

not only limited to Amazon, I reckon, right? Absolutely any niche and any affiliate product could be done the same way?

Yeah I reckon it would work in a pot of niches

just to be sure.

You're basically taking on two personas.

Neither of which have a website.

Persona one asks a question...

Persona 2 (from a different IP) gives the answer (which is a link to a cool website he had seen and is absolutely nothing to do with either persona.)

I think that's right..., right?

I love pots. and pot! lol

Lol, my thumbs are too big for my phone. Meant to say "lots"

This will work great and is some of the best advice I have seen for a while thanks, buddy

Let me know how it goes!

I can not try it, I have stores on amazon.

How do you mean? You're an Amazon seller?

Yes for years now, and I also have stores on Ebay and other places.

Ah ok got it.

Most people here do not know that I have been working online for years, and now I am moving on with several more websites and the price is right here for now,

Great information Dom,thanks

Thanks Dom for going to all this effort, I must start doing this, very much appreciated !

Let me know how it goes, let's get some results

Really exciting! thanks

Yeah I think it should be quite simple to put into action.

Excellent again Dom.

Good stuff...I like it :)

Excellent read Dom! I'm going to give it a try. Just a question: have you had any success with this method? and how would you know it's getting response?

I've had a bit of success in the past and seen others have success too.

Well if you are getting clicks to Amazon and lots of traffic from forums/facebook, it's a good sign it's working.
