What Type of Person Do You Want to Be?

So, I am reading the book Crushing It by Edmund Loh.

If you are not familiar with him, he is an internet marketer who is considered one of the top internet entrepreneurs in Asian. This book is the first one I have read on IM (almost everything else I have read has been here) and like many great stories of people who have gone on to become millionaires, it starts with him being in a financially desperate situation, struggling just to get by.

I'm not sure if I agree with everything he says-- he thinks SEO is pretty much useless-- but he does raise a few interesting points in the book, with his views on the different tpes of people being one that caught my attention.

Loh believes that there are three types of people and uses this to address why some people seem to do quite well working online (and in life, probably) while others seem unable to get anywhere.

I recognized myself in one of the types. Do you?

Three Types of People

I don't think that all people can be so easily categorized as to fall into one of only three groups, but I do think that these can be viewed as general behaviours that apply to many, many people.

  • Non-Action Takers

The first type that Loh presents are those who are dreamers more than do-ers. They are the ones who read books, go to seminars and dream about the success they will have "one day" while never really taking steps to reach their goals.

They know what they want, and perhaps even know how to get it, but never seem to really do anything. I see many, many people like this on Facebook, in "earn money online" groups. Each one has their own reason not to act, but whatever that reason is, they tend not to make any real progress.

  • The "I think I am Taking Action" Takers

This group is pretty similar to the first group in some ways; they also read books and attend seminars. They watch videos on YouTube and visit money-making sites. They sign up for various program and spend money to "learn secrets" of success, And still, they tend not to succeed very well.

Why?

Because they think that reading posts on Facebook, or checking (and waiting for) email is somehow working.

They spends hours each day in front of their computer, doing busy work that fills up lots of time, but does very little to bring them closer to what they want.

This group tends to get frustrated that "nothing works" and "everything is a scam!" because they honestly believe that they tried their best.

This type of person is quite common, unfortunately.

  • The Result-Oriented Action Taker

These are the ones that we should all work toward becoming. If you think you are working hard, you may find out you're not when you meet these people.

These are the go-getters who not only go to the semiars and read the books, they put the information to use. They stay focused, even when there are other things tempting to distract them. They are the ones who know that by working hard right now, they will benefit later. They don't waste time, but rather, make the most of it.

And they are the ones who reach their goals.

So, be honest with yourself... Which one are you?

I used to be in the first group, I would dream about what life could be like, but took no real action to make those dreams a reality. I was one of those people who wants to win the lotto, but never buys a ticket.

Later, when I found Wealthy Affiliate, I became the second type; I was excited about everything I was reading and learning, but my energies were terribly unfocused. I thought I was doing work, but I wasn't getting anywhere because I was doing the wrong things.

Now, I like to think I am edging into the third group. I am more focused and have a better plan which, yes, I will put into action!

Have you hit that point where dreams are not enough? If so, then it's time to take action.

Otherwise, you're just spinning your wheels.

Yep. I've been a 2. Now I'm becoming a 3. My problem is that I am a great starter but not a great finisher. Is that a 2 1/2? I'm changing that too.

I can totally sympathize with that. I am somewhere between 2 and 3 myself.

It's tough to overcome old bad habits and ways of thinking.

I have been 1 and 2, still mostly 2. That changes this year. I have been accepted into Kyles super affiliate training. I'll never get through the training without becoming a 3.
Thank you for the great post.
Was that a book Bo asked you to read?

That's awesome! Congrats on being accepted! This should definitely be the year that things improve drastically for you! How exciting!

Yes, this is the first book that Bo suggested.

Really good Craig, I will look for this book.

I am just like you. I started out as a type one. Definitely a dreamer. Progressed to a type 2, I do spend hours in front of the computer, (mostly within WA these days), but not really achieving anything.

I am moving to phase 3 I will change what I am doing and I will succeed.

Excellent post.

Awesome! Go for it!

I think some people may naturally fall into the type 3 personality, but I think that most people work their way up to it. It just requires either a fir commitment, or perhaps simply reaching a point in life where we say "that's enough!"

Craig,

I am definitely an action taker. I am determined to be a success with my online business.

It doesn't come easy, hard work is necessary, but it is well worth the effort.

Lisa

That's awesome!

Some people, for whatever reason, seem to have difficulty taking action. If you are naturally an action taker, that's fantastic.

Thanks for sharing Craig, I found it a really interesting read.

Cheers Caz :-)

Thank you!

Thanks for you blog as it gives us a lot to think about life and our way forward.

Tom.

Thanks!

I think it can be easy to just sit back and dream instead of acting. I suspect that most of the time it's due to a fear of failure, but once you reach the point of fearing inaction more than possibly failing, you will finally start moving forward.

Great article, Craig. I agree with the three categories. They are all you need to group people in the context of pursuing success.
I am the same as you:)

David

I envy the people who have that natural drive that puts them in group 3 right from the start, but I suspect most of us work our way up to it.

I generally try to avoid grouping people in very simplistic terms, but in this case, I think these 3 broad categories do account for just about everyone I know.

Summary

Do nothing
Do something
Do everything

Thanks for the post

Geoff

That's actually a good summary...

It makes me think of a quote I like that says "to be all that you can be, you must do all that you can do".

Mix of 2 & 3 Craig going forward!

I actually would have expected you to be a solid 3....

I guess we all have some work to do!

I wish. There are too many shiny objects to collect going forward!

WOW! I like the way this condenses how and where we put our focus.

I have to watch myself, though. It is easy to fall into the 2nd category, and think your time is being filled productively, when it's not. For example, I need to write more content for my website, and I have been here over an hour, going through C2L10, and still haven't written a new piece, today. I don't intend to let the day pass without doing just that, though. Content won't write itself!

This is a good article, and I'm glad you shared it, Craig. Thanks!

I have struggled with being in that 2nd category for a while. I delude myself into thinking that answering emails, for example, is somehow "working", but it really isn't doing anything for me.

Now I am organizing my time a bit better and focusing on things that actually do make a difference.
