What would YOU do if this happened?

I received an organic comment recently on one of my older articles which was a review of a TV box.

It wasn't very complimentary. In fact, the guy was pointing out a mistake I had made with one of my comments but he did it in a derogatory way.

He basically said I didn't know what I was talking about.

I admit, it was a mistake, I don't even know how it happened. Maybe it was late at night or maybe I just missed something in my review or picked up some wrong info along the way.

Regardless. I was in two minds what to do but decided to wait first and think before making any rash decision. I decided my options were:

1,. Ignore the comment, don't approve it. Just rectify the error and move on.

2. Approve the comment and thank the guy for highlighting how little I know.

3. Email the guy privately and thank him politely for pointing out the mistake.

4. Email the guy and give him 2 barrels.

What would you do and what do you think I did? :)

(I'm quite a proud guy and don't take to bullsh1t criticism unless it's constructive but I'm not too proud to admit to being wrong)

Edit: This is what I did. I fixed the error, approved his comment and then replied with a nice internal link, thanks to him.

Hello Craig, I think you have a fifth option, which would be a combination of 3 and rectify the error. Take the high road.

Done and dusted Harvey :)

Thanks for sharing this information.

I would do pretty much what you did here; I would point out that yes, it was a mistake and you are not sure how you overlooked it, but thanks for pointing it out. I'd simply say that I am human and not above making a mistake, although I do my best to check and double-check everything.

I haven't read the comment, but if it was outright rude, I might finish up by saying that while the correction is appreciated, it is unnecessary to be rude.

Edit: Ok, I went and read the comment. I think your response was just fine. Some people tend to communicate in a rather brusque manner, especially online. I wouldn't worry about it unless he posts again in a similar manner.

Thanks Craig, he actually did me a favor without knowing it. In the past this type of thing would have bothered me but now that I'm older and wiser, I just kinda shrug it off. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Craig
The comment from "pelli", is rude. Although he may not be aware, his communication style shows the lack of education and finesse.
My answer would be similar to what you said in your response but
I will not be surprised to see another nasty comment, from him.

Lisa

Yes Lisa, but the next comment will be deleted ;)

It's always better to respond to comments, whether it's good or bad. And it's how you respond to derogatory comments that will set you apart from all bloggers.

Cheers!

Thx Julia

You are most welcome!

This is the win-win situation.
Thank you for sharing.

I think I would make sure the concern was valid, fix it, approve the comment and move on.

Mickeyb

I think this is better than ignoring it and he gave me the opportunity to add a cheeky backlink. Win-Win.

Perfect

Personally, approve it, fix the prob and thank him for pointing it out. I wouldn't allude to not knowing anything. He'll look like an ass and will likely increase your integrity to any that read after.

Thanks Kenneth

I received previously that kind of comment, I approved it and thank the guy.. That 's it ! Thank you for sharing..

Pat

Thanks Pat.
