The Original Original
It would have to be God, wouldn't it?
Maybe the only truly and completely original thinker ever!
Period.
I mean there's been some pretty heavy dudes who unabashedly stole material...
Bill Shakespeare (1564-1616), the incomparable Bard of Avon, regularly "borrowed" material from other playwrights and poets of his time.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726), who discovered gravity (In addition to Newtonian mechanics, universal gravitation, calculus, and his dandy laws of motion), just by watching an apple fall, referred to famous thinkers before him, when he said, "We are all standing on the shoulders of giants."
Turning to the field of music, according to Business Week, the legendary English rock band Led Zeppelin, considered one of the most successful and innovative bands in history, may have ripped off the music of many smaller bands in building their extensive song catalog.
If you've heard Kid Rock's catchy 2008 hit "All Summer Long," you know that it "samples" not only Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1974 classic, "Sweet Home Alabama," but also borrows from Warren Zevon's beginning riff in his 1978 "WerewolvesOf London."
Sometimes there's a thin line.
Ex-Beatle George Harrison had a hit with "My Sweet Lord," in 1970, but a judge subsequently ruled that his song and the Chiffons' 1979 hit, "He's So Fine," were "virtually identical!"
The English rock band Oasis was required to pay $500,000.00 for the similarity of their 1994 song, "Shakermaker," to The New Seekers' 1972 song, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," which was later used in popular commercials for Coca Cola.
The Beach Boys big hit from 1963, "Surfin' USA," is pretty much the same song as Chuck Berry's 1958 hit, "Sweet Little Sixteen," which, in turn, has its roots in Louis Jordan's 1946 tune, "Ain't That Just Like A Woman!"
And on, and on, and on...
In truth, most thought builds upon previous thought in some way. That's often the way various fields expand their base of knowledge.
If we couldn't use what came before us in some way, it's likely we might never move forward at all.
After all, God's probably thought of everything already.
We're just building on that!
