How To Edit Image Information and Names For SEO - WordPress

Hello everyone!

I would like to share a "problem" I faced recently with some of my images and I would like to alert you and save you some valuable time.

Yesterday, when I was doing my "checks" with Google Search regarding the appearance of my posts and their indexing status, I realized that 2 or 3 of my images (which I didn't rename as I should) were appearing in Google with their .. original file name instead of the title I assigned to them in WordPress. For your information, Alternative Text, The Image Title Attribute, and the Alt Text were changed to the preferred title and no media or any other kind of link was present.

I noticed the problem only with the images I added as a "Featured Image" within my posts. By the way, the procedure is valid and in my opinion should be applied in all images we upload to our websites.

  • First of all we should Rename The Image prior uploading it to our media file manager in WP. That can be done externally from our computer/ image folder or it can be done within the media file manager before choosing the image to upload.

  • Then Upload your image to your post. Edit the Title and the Alt Text. (Don't Forget to remove any Links).

  • Then go to the Featured Image section and add the same image.

  • Edit TheTitle and The Alt Text again.

  • Click Set Featured Image and you are ready.

Please note that this procedure differs from theme to theme. The point is that we definitely have to rename all our images prior uploading them into our posts or on our website in order to avoid getting a faulty appearance in the Search Engine results.

Thanks for watching and have a nice weekend!

Thanks Gus, this is exactly what I needed :)

You are most welcome!

Yes... Very nicely done Gus, I use my own pics and bypass most of this. Still, this is very helpful & goes in my site build help file. (-: Jon

Hi John! I am glad you found it helpful! Wish you al the best! Gus

Thank you Gus. I rename all my images to a or b or c before uploading them to wordpress where I rename them again.

That's great Ken! I am glad to hear that it helped! Wish you all my best! Gus

Good post, Gus. Thanks.

Do you always use the featured image?

Thanks Allyn, In one of my niches and due to the theme (iconic one), I have to use the featured image so it can be seen on the page where all the posts are, otherwise it will saw only text.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that. My theme (Twenty Fourteen) doesn't require it, in fact I tried it a couple times and it just seems to interfere with my post. I've been trying to understand its importance.

I use Twenty Fourteen for one of my niches and it seems that this template does not require you to do so. I never saw a problem with my results in Google Search and the image is visible on the page with the posts without any additional work from my side. It's a great template.

Nice post thank you for sharing this
