About Clbrooks57
Joined March 2017
After 37 years working as a civil litigation paralegal I found myself struggling through cervical and lumbar degenerative disc disease which forced me to retire and apply for social security disability benefits. I had not intended to retire at the age of 59. In 2013, I took a newborn baby boy home from the hospital with the intention of temporarily assisting the mother who had landed upon hard times. Today I am the adoptive mother of a 4 year old son who was recently diagnosed with an intellectual disability, speech delay and fine motor deficits. Raising a child at my age presents challenges in and of itself!

Additionally, I have two adult children, a son born in 1980 and a daughter born in 1985. And my favorite people - 10 grandchildren ranging in ages from 7 months to 12 years.

From League City, Texas - South of Houston; North of Galveston Island.

Hi there! Thanks so much for adding me to your network. I've added you to mine as well.

I sure hope you're doing well with what you've had to go through physically. That sounds horribly painful. And I must say bless you for adopting the little boy you took in "temporarily." Takes a big heart and a special kind of person to do that.

Best wishes to you on your journey here at WA!

Hi Carole, nice to hear from you. I look forward to getting to know you my new WA friend. Sorry about the delay in responding but I am a bit slow at the moment. Trying to do too many things at once.

I just left you a comment on your About Page on your website.

Wow, are you totally wonderful coming through that life.

If you have time I would love it if you visited one of my websites and left a comment on a post, any one will do. The site addresses are fantasy-sci-fi-vision.com and https://workingonthewildside.com.

Keep working hard, having fun and don’t forget to ask questions.

A very nice boss once told me, ‘Helen, when you ask a silly question everyone else breathes a collective sigh of relief because they don’t have to!’ And that is so true. No question is silly so ask away.

If I can’t help I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Now let us keep in touch.

Thank you, Jude, and I am convinced of it. Right now everything is changing so fast and with a different form of treatment now prescribed for my son, I have wholly neglected my site. But, it is still ranking so hopefully it is easily salvageable.

Hi Carole, I am sure it is more than just salvageable. In any case, building content for website is a constant effort, so when you kickstart your engine once again, things will pick up the pace for you. Due to commitments here and there, I am occasionally 'away from my site' for days. Things seem to slow down when I do but when I come back to it, it picks up. Most importantly, with time, your site will run in the background even when you do have other things to attend to.

Carole, I believe that your adoptive son was put in your life for a reason. I have a son, now 15, who has those same issues along wwith autism and some developmental delays. You can do this! What he needs most is your love and patience. A good routine is good too, just don't make it too rigid or he will never learn to cope with the unexpected. Take what the "experts" say about his disabilities and file them away. Don't saddle him with preconceived expectations. Push his gently on and you will be pleasantly surprised at all he is capable of achieving!

Thank you for adding me to your network! I have added you to mine as well. You and i have a lot in common. I, too, have degenerative disc disease im my neck and lumbar spine. I am on Social Security Disability. I can relate! I find radiopathy (nerve ablation) to work wonders! I look forward to getting to work with you in the future!

If you have any questions, about WA or raising a special needs boy, please feel free to contact me.

Hello Carol, I have worked over 30 years in the field of disability representation also, so it seems we have some background in common. I know quite a few reps that work in Texas also! I hope you are finding success here with this new venture. The work here is new to me but I am finding it fascinating. All the best to you!

It is very fascinating, but if we can handle disability representation and get approvals on initial filings then this will be a piece of cake. LOL. My niche is not in disability claims. If yours is, maybe I could guest blog for you sometime.

Hi Ms. Brooks,
Thanks for following me, and welcome to the network. I applaud your concern for a child. I believe there is no greater gift on earth than pouring out your heart to a child!
Could I give you a bit of advice even though you didn't ask? Learn all the Title 9 has for a child with challenges. Make sure that his school complies fully. If I can help, contact me!
Reply
Clbrooks57 Premium
Thanks. Advice is always welcome. We are in good hands. He was evaluated and has been involved in early childhood intervention/early childhood development program since the age of 3. They are limited, however in that he only receives 10 minutes of speech, occupational and physical therapy per week. And, of course, that isn't something they bring to your attention (in fact the amount of therapy is presented in a number of hours per year and appears more substantial than it really is). Thank goodness his father has excellent insurance coverage. He begins additional in-home therapies next week. I have also enrolled him in a Montessori school during the summer for extra social involvement. Since doing so I have seen a more rapid improvement. I was recently divorced and the lawyer I have specializes in disability as well. Everything we have needed has been provided. If you can think of anything I may be missing, please message me.

You ROCK!
Reply

You can call a meeting at any time to increase the amounts of time he gets for speech. You as a parent have the power to dictate the programs for your child. The school system will complain that it isn't possible, and may even tell you that it isn't possible, but if you know or have a doctor's statement that more is needed, it shall be done for you!!!
Reply
Clbrooks57 Premium
That is good to know. He is starting home therapies covered by insurance but he is only allowed so many visits combined. At two per week for each, that will run out quickly. I very much appreciate the information.

Hi Carole!!!

Seems we are on a parallel plane.....

After a 35 year career as a Commercial Banker I was forced to retire in 2011 at age 53 due to an accident that put me in a wheelchair (now mobility scooter). Now also 59, I need to supplement my Soc.Sec.Disability Income to finish raising our last of three children. My son is now 17.

Can't even imagine having a 4 year old - like starting over with special circumstances!!!

Our Prayers Are With You!!!

God Bless You For Taking Care of Your Little Boy!!!

Warm Regards & Best Wishes For Your Success Here At WA!!!

We most definitely are! I was in a wheelchair in 2009 for awhile before my first back surgery so I well know the challenges. I am blessed my surgery was a success. It is definitely life changing. After working so hard for so many years the SSDI checks are weak. I think this the place to put all of my knowledge where I will see a payoff. I have had some issues to deal with the last two weeks and I can definitely see a difference with being persistent and not. Persistence wins. But we already know that, don't we?

Oh yes the 4 year old is my ultimate challenge. But soon he will be 5 and then 6 and then 26. LOL. I have a 36 year old son, 31 year old daughter and 10 grandchildren too!!! All in a life's work.

Best of luck to you. Let me know if you ever need any help. And I'm serious about that!!!

Peace!

Well, I certainly got a much later start than you did - I have a two daughters 26 & 24 years old and the 17 year old son. And we just were blessed with our first Grandchild (Grandson) this last January. 5 months old now - time flies!!!

You have such a refreshing and positive attitude - very nice to see - considering all you have been through - but what/how else are we going to be successful if we cave to life's pressures???

We also share the persistence Bug!!! ;-)

I will definitely take you up on your seriousness!!!

Peace & Love To You Too!!! ;-)

Tempted and tried we're oft made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Welcome to Wealthy Affiliate Carole!

John here from http://Jvanderlaan.com. I'm glad to see you've signed up and are ready to get started building your online business.

Right now, there are just two super important things you need to know.

1) If you ask questions and interact with the community you are far more likely to see results with your business. The support here at WA is the best in the internet marketing industry...please take advantage of it.

2) You can access me for 1-on-1 support by leaving a message on my profile https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/jvanderlaan or by responding directly to this message.

There are a ton of other features worth exploring, but they are explained in the main training. Time to get started on the first lesson!

PS. Did you know that you'll already have your website built by lesson 4? Crazy, I know!

Before you go, can you please respond to this message so I know you made it inside the community? I'd like to connect with you so I can keep an eye out for your questions this week.

Best,
JV

Thank you. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. It is spring break here!! I have reached lesson 4 and I'm ready to create the site, but I was wondering if I could proceed through additional lessons and create the website later. Is that possible? I am a research addict by nature and training and I want to have more information before setting up the first one.

Hi Carole,

While everyone is different, it is generally best to complete the tasks as you go.

The lessons are in an order that allows you to progress in such a way, that you will have success.

Hope this helps,
JV

P.S. Enjoy spring break!
