You Are An Employer NOT An Employee - Change Your Mindset!
Would you, hire you?
Stop whatever you are doing and think about that for a few minutes.
Would you, hire you?
Let me put it another way. If you were looking through our activities at Wealthy Affiliate (WA) and you came across your profile, blog posts and comments, would you be excited to employ you?
Role Reverse With Yourself
One of the exercises I facilitate with clients I coach involves role reversal. Yesterday, I had a very engaging coaching session with a client who just came out of a not-so-good, end-of-year performance review.
His CEO asked me to help him understand how his view of himself was holding him back from giving his best.
As we were having our session, I taped it, waited a couple of hours and then sent him the video clip.
He sent me a What's App message last evening to say: "I wouldn't hire me."
The message was received.
Be Your Own Coach
With all the writings, comments and examples of success here at WA, it's not hard to envision what you want for yourself or where you want to be.
I am not referring to being like anyone else.
What is important is being inspired and motivated to achieve the things that you want, learning what you need to do to meet your objectives and changing the behaviours in your life that YOU know you need to.
Once you engage here in a meaningful way, it becomes easy to be your own coach and mentor.
You actually see success happening in front of you and you know what other members are doing to achieve it.
There is no getting away from it unless you leave the community.
You are no Longer an Employee
From the moment you enter our WA community, your journey to becoming an Entrepreneur begins.
It becomes imperative to change your mindset and behaviours.
There is no one to manage you or lead you. You are in control of your destiny and where you take yourself is all up to you.
You are now the employer!
This business is yours!
We are 2 weeks into the new year. There are 50 more to go.
If you haven't aligned your mindset to lead and manage your business, this weekend is a good opportunity to do that.
Make good use of your time.

We are in control of what we do and what we are. (I know this on a basic level as a person), but it does apply to our business, and until we see that we are just going along with the group.
Unfortunately, the group rarely achieves its' goals.

I enjoyed reading your post. For awhile, I struggled with that type of “employee” mindset early on. I still do a little bit having a regular job, but have gotten better in the last year.
I always see myself taking ownership of my work and taking responsibility. It’s what I keep in mind when I’m working on my business. One day, I’ll achieve the “employer” mindset- so you make some relevant points.

Eric, the sooner you own the "employer-mindset" the better.
Having a full-time job as an employee means that you have to make a conscious effort to let that mindset go.
It is achievable though, with some thought and extra effort.

Thank you for your very thought-provoking post, it is very interesting indeed.
Do you know Cassi, I could watch a training video on Wealthy Affiliate and understand 100% but if I had to explain to someone I would have difficulty! I could probably actually explain it better by creating a video and this is actually what I do sometimes. I suppose this is because I have visuals to show to people.
It's interesting about your role reversal and how your client responded.
I often joke with people and say that I am unemployable! I guess this is from being self-employed for so long, since 1983 to be precise!

Visuals are a great way to make maximum use of our senses, Roy.
It engages sight, hearing, emotions and doing and perhaps the most effective learning tool, especially for behaviour change.
I may well be unemployable myself. 🙂

Hi Cassi, Thank you for a fantastic thought-provoking post. As a manager, there are some days I wish I were the employer, hence my reason for becoming an entrepreneur to run my own business. Since I have been doing this at WA, I have learned more from asking questions, receiving support and motivation, and have ever done from an employer!

The message you convey in your post is crucial to understand. We own our "one man/one woman" business and must act accordingly.
Your method of coaching by taping your client is a great way to get the message across. We use the same method when coaching our competitors in our karate club. Very effective.
