What Led Me Here

In 2015, I ended my last formal stint in the offline corporate world. It was a heart-wrenching decision but, after many years of climbing the topless ladder, I became disillusioned with the envied Executive Suite. It was not what I had hoped it would be.

To whom much is given, much, much more expected and the expectation was that I would give my soul and compromise my integrity and values. It was an easy decision to make, although the world outside did not understand it.

After spending a couple of years wetting my feet again and investing in an offline business with a dubious partner, I made the firm decision that it was all me, or nothing at all.

In 2018, I started to research online opportunities which led me, one year later, to discover Wealthy Affiliate (WA).

The Learning Has Been Profound

I mean it when I say that in all my years of offline corporate experience, in organisations around the world, I have never encountered a place like WA. In just under 1 year, I have:

  • had my desires and passions reignited,
  • connected with some remarkable human beings,
  • received empathy and support that inspires me to be a better person,
  • found like-minded friends who are remarkable role models,
  • once again believed in my ability to achieve and accomplish and,
  • learned one hell of a lot!!!

2 lessons stand out for me, as we begin the 38th week of 2020

1. Have Patience

Early on, I recall someone saying our WA journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Back then I had no clue what that meant.

This was about making money on the internet and with over 4 billion people here, it had to happen quickly.

I completed my first course in less that 7 days, signed up for Premium and began pushing forward. As the lessons unfolded though, I realised that this was not going to be any overnight success. If I truly wanted to build an online business, I had to approach it just like any other business.

It could not be built haphazardly if it was going to last a lifetime. Structure, order and a keen understanding of what I was doing was necessary and required me to have patience.

I Was Out Of My Depth

Being the typical A-Type, you can have an idea of what functioning out of my depth meant. At times, I felt almost helpless and wondered if I was ever going to get a grasp of all this.

Watching the WA blog posts roll by with Members sharing all their successes did not help me in those early days. I wanted to be like them and I wanted to get there quickly.

In my eagerness to help in the Community, I recall trying to help someone in Live Chat and then getting a PM saying the person I was trying to help was well-known and somewhat difficult, so be careful. I quickly retreated.

I had a similar experience in Site Comments when one of my early Comments was rejected.

These were hard experiences to swallow, especially when I was accustomed to doing everything I did well.

2. Be Kind To Yourself

The turning point came when I started to pay attention to the fact that everyone here is on a path of learning - first. No one started out here being a millionaire or a mind-blowing online success.

We are all starting from the very same point - OEC Level 1 Getting Started! We are all here to learn.

Some may have more technology experience or may have tried Affiliate Marketing before. But, if where you were made you the success you wanted to be, you would not be here, right?

Do not be intimidated or allow feeling of being overwhelmed get the better of you.

We give immeasurable kindness to each other every day but, do you consider tending to your own needs? Do you stop to offer yourself some much-needed recognition and motivation?

Last week was a very busy one for us. The icing on the cake was Jay's Peserverance Challenge that I see so many of you participating in.

I know that the end of 2020 is fast-approaching and you may want to give it your all.

In the midst of all of that, may I also remind you to direct some kindness your way and remember to be patient with yourself and allow learning, grow and success to rest comfortably on your shoulders.

Have a productive and enjoyable week.

Cassi, thank you sharing your journey. I think most of us share a lot of the same experience and feelings you write about.
It is highly motivating to read your story

What I noticed especially in what you write is that we are here to learn. Most of us do not know what affiilate marketing or doing business online are, and we need to tak the time it takes to learn the trade.

Also, the importance of giving ourselves a pat on the back on even the smallest achievements we gain each day.

Roy

Absolutely, Roy.

The proviso is that we realise we are building a BUSINESS and not here to turn over a quick buck or 2.
It will take time.

Thank you for your feedback.
Cassi

You´re welcome, Cassi :-)

Roy

Great advice Cassi.
For some who come to the platform with no prior experience it can seem very overwhelming and I know there have been instances of new members finding it very difficult to make progress. I was lucky to have some experience as well as a good mentor. It’s why I make a point of contacting and helping anyone I refer here.
True also about being too hard on ourselves. A little bit of self-kindness goes a long way 🙂

Dave, thank you for your feedback and sharing.

I felt it important because I amseeing so many people getting overwhelmed lately.
Like you, I had a basic understanding of what I was getting into and managed my expectations, but so many do not.

I am trying to reach out to very new members more now.

Enjoy your day!

It’s interesting that you list being kind to yourself as an important lesson. This is something I’ve been working on a lot.

There is a fine line between being too easy on yourself (justifying procrastination until you complete nothing) and beating yourself up so much that you give up. It’s a constant balancing act, isn’t it?

Thank you for the post, Cassi!

Kerry

It is an ongoing balancing act, Kerry.
That is true.

What helps me is staying in tune with my priorities.
I review them regularly and make the adjustments that I need to.

I also know that if I do not accomplish them, I will not earn.
That is critical!

Keep working at it and you will find your balance.

Thank you very much for your kind feedback.

Yeah, I too get envious because I'm not There yet...Patience is one thing I don't use very much. I want it now. So in my stubbornness to follow the training, I tried to wing it. But its ok, I've picked myself back up and have embarked on a new journey. Thanks for being some of the inspiration here, at WA.

Rudy, it takes a very strong person to admit that.
Now that you have recognised it, it is easier to make the adjustments that you need to and move forward.

The lessons will serve you well as you build your business.

You have my admiration.
Cassi

Thank you, Cassie...I'm getting there!

You are welcome, Rudy.

Hi Cassi Thank you for sharing a time from your past and your reflections. We all have moments where it’s good to look back to see how far we’ve come in life. I love your post in writing techniques and I look forward to reading more as you progress in WA. And you words are motivational. Well done.

Yvonne, thank you!!
I appreciate your feedback and sentiments.

it is a good feeling when what we share can help others on their journey.
This makes WA very powerful, indeed. 🙂

Have a good evening.
