Hey fellow WAU members, Buck here, ready to assist you with all your website and WordPress problems.

I see many of you in the chat room or in comments frustrated and close

Hi Buck!
I bet you didn't think I'd be contacting you so soon! - hahaha

Trying to get a feed to show on my site - I keep getting this error:
SimplePie reported: cURL error 7: couldn't connect to host

... do you know how to remedy this? I just can't get it to work.

Thanks!

I just want to show some articles from one specific site - but can't get it to work

You've actually asked a pretty complicated question... In most cases this isn't an issue with WordPress or your plugin but rather your firewall and/or server. This may take a wile to fix as there are a lot of steps that we first need to do to even figure out what the problem may be.

First, you need to add code to your functions.php file to see if it's a firewall issue. Past this code into the bottom of your functions.php file.

$ch = curl_init("http://google.com"); // initialize curl handle
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, 1);
$data = curl_exec($ch);
print($data);

After entering this code, if the google search box doesn't show on your home page you have a firewall or restriction issue and you need to contact your hosting support.

You are the Man! Buck. That is information I have never heard and no one will tell you. Thank you

Sure thing, thank you! I'm an open vault, no secrets.

Hi Buck! Great to see that the Buck stops here... just kidding... :-) I've got an idea for my next website's name and wanted to run it by you, let me know when you can assist me...

It's cool, I should use that... "The Buck Stops Here" I like it!

I'm ready when you are, just PM me the name you were thinking about if you don't want to post it live and I'll be happy to assist you.

Hi Buck, I am thrilled you are offering your services. I've been with WA for about a month. My progress seems a little slow to me. But here goes my problem I need fixed.

I use the "Catch Box" theme. When I went through Kyle's training for setting up menu pages in the header and organizing them in the right order, all went fine.

My menu headings at the top were. 1. Home 2. Getting Started 3. Scam Reports 4. About Christine 5. Privacy Policy

The problem came when I followed a training by a member to add my "Google+ Profile" as a menu item. When I did this, somehow I ended up adding a "Custom Menu" in the right side bar (which I don't want) with some of my menus repeating there. Now my heading at the top are out of order.

I would like to keep the Google+ Profile only in right sidebar.

How can I fix this?

My site is:http://nichemarketingwithchristine.com

If you see anything else that needs to be fixed, please let me know.

Also, do you recommend upgrading to WordPress 3.9 Beta 3 - while it is still in Beta phase.

You can also PM me if need be for specific individualized feedback. However, I have no problem with responding here for problems I've cited above. Thank you so much. -Christine

Hi Christine, I'm going to look at your site in a few min, I think I know what the problem is but I want to look first and make sure.

As for the upgrading, I suggest waiting until the stable version is out. They let you upgrade while it's in beta so people can find bugs and give feedback. It won't hurt your site to wait.

So I think you just accidentally rearranged the menu items when trying to add the google+ item. If you go to your Menu Manager Page you can actually grab the menu items with your mouse and manually move them to arrange them in any order you want. Try that and let me know if it worked for you.

As for your google+ item, I didn't see it on the site, did you remove it?

I don't suggest adding it as an actually menu item. Your theme is already set up for you to add it as a social media icon and that's the best way to go. Check out your themes' preview page here, http://catchthemes.com/demo/catchbox/ and scroll down to the bottom to see what I mean.

To add these icons you generally have to go onto our themes settings page and add the url to your different social media sites. They wont show on your site if you leave the field blank.

Let me know if any of this is making sense, I have complete confidence in my web skills but not so much in my teaching skills. :)

Sites looking good, I didn't see any other problems. Good job!

Thanks for checking out my site. I see what you mean about social buttons already at the bottom of theme blog from preview page you gave. Never noticed this before.

I can just delete that entire custom menu from the right sidebar. I will go back to Menu Manager Page and arrange. Your teaching skills confidence will improve the more you read that the advice you are giving us is solving problems.

Thanks Christine, glad I could help.

Wordpress is not that difficult and this is coming from someone who had no experience 6 months ago with websites. You need to do some looking around with your theme to see what you have. Someone suggested doing a free website to see how the theme works and then if you like it get it for your domain name. Some people panic too soon when what they need to do is walk away from the situation. Nice of you to offer help but be warned you will get lots of responses. This should not hamper your desire to build your business as well. Debbie

Thanks for the tips Debbie and you are definitely right about people panicking too soon.

I also appropriate the concern and warning; however, I've been working with WordPress professionally for approximately 9 years; I realize that I will get lots of responses here, I'm actually kind of counting on it.

I get motivated by helping others and I have a lot of experience and knowledge I can pass on to help them succeed.

I will promise you though, I will not let my helping others interfere with completing my own goals and desires.

What an offer Buck!

Word Press (WP) is by far the one most puzzling and frustrating areas that I have faced since coming on board into WAU 5 or so months ago. With your recent FREE WP training blog and this blog offer I'm so relieved. Let me repeat that - I am so relieved. I am going to sleep better tonight, tomorrow night and,,,,,,,

Because of WAU folks like you it seems that with each months passing I get more and more fired up with WAU and our WAU Community, Somethings got to give. Some nights I don't want to go to bed (focusing on WAU stuff) until 1-2:30 am and often getting up at 6-7 am. And I'm a late sleeper. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzz NUFF said! Larry freedomforus

Thanks Larry! I really can't thank you enough for the support you have shown me from the very min I sighed up to WA...

hey Buck, based on your experiences, which WP theme is the easiest to work with? I'm new to this whole thing, so the easiest is the best for me. Thanks a lot, Buck!

Most WordPress themes are fairly easy to use, the mistake I see most people making is picking the wrong one for their business from the start.

There are themes that are specifically great for blogging, some that are great for service based sites, and some that are meant for product and eCommerce sites.... there are themes for other types too but those are the three main ones.

So for example, if you want to start a site selling products but you pick a theme really only meant for blogging you are going to run into a bunch of problems.

The first thing you want to do is really determine what you want to do now and possible in the future with your site. Then start looking for themes that will fulfill those needs. If you pick the right theme, a lot of the hard work is already done for you right in the pre-made theme.

If you want to PM me the details of your business and the type of site you want I can direct you more accurately toward a theme that's easy to use.

thanks a lot for the clearance, I will PM you for more WP questions..

Sounds good, I'll keep an eye for it.

he.he.he.. once this announcement come out there? I bet you can't sort your PM that easily and found my name in these huge pile of it.. LOL..

Lol... not there just yet. I'm still fairly new here at WA so I'm working on getting myself out in front of those who can benefit from my help.

This is just one step in the right direction. Call me crazy but I hope that it will get that way one day. I would like it if this just became a place all the members knew to go to get help or look for a solution.

Soon...

Hi Buck, Good idea and I support your offer to help, I'm sure many will welcome your suggestion!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Fred!

Thanks Buck, that is a wonderful offer, sure hope people take you up on it. I'm sure I will have some soon, but just at this moment I am doing well.

Good to hear, if that changes, leave a comment here or PM me.

Will definitely do!

Thanks for the offer of help Buck. I may get back to you later as I think I may have sorted out my "WP pain in the butt editing problems" by installing another editor. Time will tell....:)

I look forward to reading other members comments and any of your future training. Cheers, Annie.

Sounds good, you know where to find me if that changes.
