Web Design Video Training Series - Introduction
How's it going WAU buddies!
I want to create a serious of videos that will walk you thru solving some of the common problems you run into while creating your websites and working within WordPress. I also want to include some awesome tips and general design practices that will help bring your websites up to a more professional level.
However, I just discover that I'm unable to embed a video in my blog :(
Well, I don't want the Introduction video to go to wast so there's a link to it below. Check it out if you like as I will be deleting it in a day or two along with this blog post...

Ha, you must of seen it right as I was posting it then, I was trying to see if the video could be embed so there was no link yet. I put that in afterwards.
nice video, nice page- the Vimeo players sits well on the page and it is a good combination of look and content- it definitely needs bringing back..Andy
I know right! Well, in 2 months, 2 weeks, and 5 days, I'll be able to embed videos here in my training area. Looking forward to it!
Yes Buck, I definitely want you to make this series of videos. There are an incredible number of little things that are driving me crazy about my website. Many have been solved, but each time I solve one I seem to run into another one. I watched the video you created. Was that your voice? It was crisp and clear and very easy to listen to.
Yes that was my voice, Thank you!
Go ahead and start telling me what's driving you crazy.
If it's something I need to look at but you don't want to advertise your site just yet, PM me the site address; otherwise just throw it into a comment so If I'm able to solve the problem others who are having the same issue can see the solution.
Let's start with my menu. I had it spaced out perfectly, but I needed to add 2 letters to a word and that threw it into a second line. Looks awful. Should I try and change code to make the words a little smaller or should I make the menu go to the side of my site and not worry about it. Can one have a top menu and a side menu. I think I know the answer to that because I managed to put my whole menu in the footer. I did get it out and even learned a bit more but darn, how much time does it take to learn this stuff. I love to learn, I enjoy relaying the information to others. Maybe there are just not enough hours in a day!
Terea, there's a couple different ways you can solve the menu issue.
• You can try and shorten some of the menu names; for example, if you are using "Contact Me" take out me and just have it "Contact". People know it means the same thing and it saves you a little room.
• You can group menu items into sub-menus; for example, if you had "Dog Food" and "Dog Treats" as menu items you could group them together as drop down sub-menus under one main menu item titled "Pet Nutrition"
• You could also go into the CSS Style sheet and reduce the padding a couple pixels between menu items and/or change the font size; however, you would need to know what you are looking for in the code so this may be a little more difficult.
As for putting the menu on the side. I don't recommend it.
However, this is only my opinion because I personally don't like the way it looks. It will not effect the functionality of the site in anyway. So if it's something you want to do then yes that would be another option for you.
For having one menu on top and one on side, yes this can also be done. This is common with blog type sites as you'll have the main navigation at the top and then categories and recent post links on the side.
That's great. Well right now I have a number of problems.. I'm using a paid theme, and can't seem to get my website name to appear at the top of the page as I have on previous websites. (I want to do this to remind people what site they're actually on, until I get a logo).
Second, I often don't know how I want the site to look, playing around until I'm happy doesn't work for me,so I have a test website to play with first and then copy what I did on my real site. I seem to benefit from actually 'designing' each page first.
Right now I want to design a page so that part of the menu is in separate coloured boxes right there on the page for the users to click on, to bring up the relevant info. I'm sure I've seen that somewhere on another website and I haven't just dreamed it.. I have no idea how to do that..but I really want it.
Whats the name of the theme you are using? Can you PM me your website address so i can take a look?
Go to your settings/general page in the admin area and double check to see if you have a title in the "site title" field. If you do then your theme settings may be overwriting it. You can check your theme settings and see if there's an area for you to add it there.
As for the different colored menu items. Yes this can be done and I'm sure you have seen it, not going crazy... However, if your theme isn't setup with that feature already available, you need to do it by adding custom menu classes and CSS styles. This would require you to access the sites files and do some code writing.
What you can do is upload your training videos right here inside WA.
Just go here:
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/mytraining
It says my training section is restricted and I have to be a premium member for 3 months before I can start creating them.
I've only been here a week! lol.
I guess I don't, but it was only meant to be a test video so there's no real information in it, just about a minute of me talking. LOL
ok, good for you (or me) cause this kind of training is more effective for me.. now I'll raise my hand above and pray : god, please let Buck be healthy and generous all the time, so he'll always share his brain (ok, his knowledge) with the rest of us here.. amen.. ^_^
Keep it coming, Buck!
I just checked out your video. DANG!! I think it's a great idea!! The music made me feel like I was in a movie theater!! One of the things I'm wondering about is general layout. Is that a theme specific thing? What are some visually captivating layout ideas to suck in your readers?
Thanks... I guess I have to be a premium member for at least 3 months before I'm aloud to create classes with videos in them.
Layouts, hmmm, that's a whole training course in it self. If you study a bunch of different sites you will start to notice that while the design changes there's really only a handful of different layouts being used.
I don't want to go into a whole lot of detail here because it would make for a really long reply comment but I do plan on create a whole blog post on the subject.
But until then, I can tell you that the current trend is:
• Jumbotron Header slider on home page
• Fixed navigation bar
• Full screen layout
• Responsive framework
The Wealthy Affiliate's site home page is a good example of all those standards. www.wealthyaffiliate.com
A good way to grab your viewers is with Large high quality imagery and movement.
Did you click on the link and go to the Vimeo site? You should be able to view the video there.
I'm going to leave it up for a day or so and then delete it.

I thought your intro video was very good and I would definitely be interested in seeing the series you create. Having not begun building a website yet, I cannot help you with problem area's yet.
Thanks for the complement, I'll be here whenever you are ready.
