Losing our rights to Privacy
Hey Bren here. I got this email today from NameCheap, where I bought my domain name. I would like to put here in this blog and see if any of you who use NameCheap received it also. According to them this is an urgent matter for any one who has a eCommerce website. I hope I'm not breaking any rule hear about placing this email on my blog.
"Hello Bren,
Did you know that your privacy rights are currently under threat? ICANN is considering introducing a rule that would impact all netizens. If you care about your online privacy, this is a big deal.
Under new guidelines proposed by MarkMonitor and other organizations who represent the same industries that backed SOPA, domain holders with sites associated to "commercial activity" will no longer be able to protect their private information with WHOIS protection services. "Commercial activity" casts a wide net, which means a vast number of domain holders will be affected. Your privacy provider could be forced to publish your contact data in WHOIS or give it out to anyone who complains about your website, without due process. Why should a small business owner have to publicize her home address just to have a website?
We think your privacy should be protected, regardless of whether your website is personal or commercial, and your confidential info should not be revealed without due process. If you agree, please contact ICANN right away and demand your right to privacy and due process. Let them know you object to any release of info without a court order. There's no time to waste -- the close date for comments is July 7, 2015.
Visit our new site RespectOurPrivacy.com and we'll guide you through the process of calling or emailing ICANN. Thanks!"

BelievItYes, do the following and every thing will be alright:
I received another email today that directed me to the URL:
https://www.respectourprivacy.com/
Go there and follow the instructions. There is a pre-written letter there. All you have to do is read it first and if you agree then click the send button. That's it.

Ok, but basically what does that mean? English is not my native language. When they say our privacy will not be respected anymore, what are they talking about exactly? Our home address?
I just Google this issue using this search phrase:
"MarkMonitor and other organizations who represent the same industries that backed SOPA, domain holders with sites associated to "commercial activity" will no longer be able to protect their private"
This text box rejected the actual URL that Google came up with so hopfully you'll find it with that phrase above.Don't include the Quotes""
If you want to read more about this there are plenty of links available there.
One little sweet surprise for me, was that my blog was on the the first page and above the fold...whaw hooo that's never happen to me before...also there were over 40,000,000 entries....is that the correct word???
Now that could be. Spam or not I guess spammers can use the acronyms of places like the ICANN...but will pay for it in the end.
Okay, so Bren., would you have a suggestion for how the best way for dealing with this? Does this email apply for specific people who bought the domain name at a certain time or -..? Is there something We should do?
jassicania, for now go to https://www.respectourprivacy.com/
and read the whole page. I'm not legally oriented so I'm not sure what to do.
I was hoping that Kyle or Carson or someone in the upper echelon would help us to understand what to do.
As Larry said it may be a scam, but I have no Idea how to find it.
Instead of panicking, let's take this on as an interesting learning event. The more we know how to handle the more secure we can be in our respective businesses.
At the moment, I'm getting ready for a hearing at an appeal board, so I'm too focused on that. It will be over tomorrow, then, I can work with every one to figure it out.

I'm not sure what this means? I bought 2 domains on namecheap but never received this email. Can anyone help?
thanks!
BelieveItYes, I don't know any more then what is in this blog post. My understanding of it is that it is not just affecting NameCheap, it involves anyone who has a domain name no matter where you bought it.
