Copycat Syndrome: Tips for Creating Original and Unique Online Content
Since AI started almost a year ago, I began to feel like I was creating copy that had been rehashed repeatedly via the Internet. I decided to explore this feeling of "copycat syndrome." Do we copy and paste everything that AI writes? Are we constantly mimicking others online, struggling to produce original content? Information online is genuinely abundant. Competition is fierce; it's easy for us to fall into the trap of reproducing what others are doing. However, I share that being a copycat won't set you apart or help you gain a loyal audience. We should all learn to create unique online content that captivates our readers.
The Impact of Unoriginal Content vs. Unique Online Content
As a result of the Internet, where information is readily accessible with just a few clicks, unoriginal content has become an alarming trend. Countless articles, blog posts, and social media updates on the Internet are rehashed repeatedly. It's like reading the same information more than a thousand times. It gets boring after a while.
This lack of originality can negatively affect both creators and consumers.
As Kyle stated in his post about Google's helpful content, social media like Quora, Linkedin, and others dominate search engine results. This is an opportunity for us to create unique content that should be helpful for your targeted audience.
See Kyle's Post if you still need to read it.
When multiple sources produce the same content without adding new insights or perspectives, it becomes difficult for users to find valuable, unique information when unoriginal content leads to data saturation.
The credibility of online sources diminishes when there is a proliferation of duplicate content.
Users start questioning the authenticity and reliability of such authorities, leading to a loss of trust in digital platforms as reliable sources of information.
Unoriginal content hinders innovation and creativity in various industries.
Honestly, It stifles original ideas by promoting imitation rather than encouraging fresh thinking or novel approaches to problem-solving.
Google created this helpful content to prioritize quality and original content over duplicates.
Websites with copied content can be penalized by search engines or ranked lower than those offering unique content. As a result, website traffic and organic reach are negatively affected.
I see people copying and pasting directly from artificial intelligence, which ultimately makes you lose authenticity and credibility. I would not do this at all.
Doing that doesn't help you build your brand to distinguish yourself from other websites.
On the other hand, unique online content offers several advantages.
1. Promotes diversity: This gives users various perspectives on a particular topic. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the subject and encourages critical thinking.
2. Unique content also helps to establish authority and credibility in a particular niche or industry. When a website consistently produces high-quality and original content, it gains recognition as a reliable source of information, leading to increased traffic and loyal followers.
3. Original content can drive innovation and creativity by encouraging individuals to share their unique ideas and thoughts.
The answer lies in prioritizing uniqueness over conformity. This requires us to think outside the box rather than simply following trends or copying what others have done. We can contribute to a diverse, authentic digital landscape by valuing originality when creating online content.
Importance of Creating Original and Unique Content
Creating original and unique content is crucial in today's online world. With so much information readily available at our fingertips, it can be tempting to regurgitate what others have already said. However, this copycat syndrome not only dilutes the value of your content but also hinders your ability to stand out from the crowd.
It is essential because:
1. Originality is vital: Establish yourself as an expert by offering fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, or unique insights.
2. Original content has a better chance of reaching more people. We can add value to the users' searches with Google's helpful content. When you create something truly original, you increase your chances of being discovered by those searching.
3. Original content sets you apart from competitors: Having unique content allows you to showcase your personality and expertise while building a loyal following that appreciates your uniqueness. I wouldn't say I like reading the same old ideas that are repeatedly rehashed. Do you?
The key idea is to be authentic and show the unique voice and creativity set you apart from other bloggers.
5 Tips for Brainstorming and Generating Original Ideas
1. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: The only way to develop original ideas is to leave and venture out of your comfort zone. You can read books or articles about unfamiliar subjects, attend workshops or conferences in unrelated fields, or converse with people from diverse backgrounds to break your routine and try something new. You can create unique content if you are willing to try new things.
2. Using AI Can Bring Unique Ideas: AI algorithms can analyze large amounts of data and identify patterns and connections humans may not have thought of. This can be a valuable tool for generating original ideas. It can also provide a fresh perspective and develop new combinations or variations of existing ideas.
3. Use Paraphrasing Tools: Research on Google to see if anyone else has written these ideas. It is essential to verify that artificial intelligence data is accurate. You shouldn't copy and paste; you should be able to think critically and write for your human readers. I want to encourage you all to use a paraphrasing tool. You can use Grammarly to do that and Hemingway Editor to help you paraphrase.
4. Brainstorm and Seek Inspiration with Others: You can generate original ideas by brainstorming. When you brainstorm with a group, everyone brings a unique perspective and experience, resulting in diverse and creative ideas. Furthermore, it is possible to spark new connections and develop innovative solutions by sharing ideas.
4. Engage in Divergent Thinking: Divergent thinking is developing multiple solutions or possibilities for a given problem or idea. When engaging in divergent thinking, ask yourself "What if?" or "How might we?" questions and brainstorm all possible solutions, no matter how unconventional they seem. This can result in original and innovative content.
5. Explore Different Mediums: Don't limit yourself to one medium when brainstorming for fresh ideas; come up with fresh ideas using a variety of formats - such as blog posts, videos, infographics, or podcasts. You can gain new insights into a given topic by experimenting with various mediums and exploring different angles or perspectives.
Embracing Your Voice and Creativity
Creating original and unique online content is about more than just standing out. For us, it's about embracing our voice and creativity. We will stand out if we show authentic content in a world flooded with duplicate information.
So, how can you embrace your voice and creativity?
1. Trust yourself: Be bold, take risks, and think outside the box. Some of the most successful content creators got where they are by daring to be different. Brian Dean did that. The two guys from Authority Hacker did that. There are many more creators out there who chose to be unique.
2. Find inspiration from within: Create original content that resonates with others by reflecting on your passions, interests, and personal experiences.
3. Be authentic: Authenticity shines through your online content, so stay true to yourself and let your personality shine.
4. Constantly learn and grow: You can develop fresh ideas that have yet to be explored if you remain curious and seek new knowledge.
5. Think beyond boundaries: It is possible to generate innovative ideas by exploring diverse sources of inspiration, such as art, literature, music, and other interests.
Final Thoughts
I encourage all aspiring content creators- bloggers, vloggers, and writers to break free from the copycat syndrome. Create something extraordinary that reflects your unique perspective and captures the hearts of your audience. Embrace your style and voice because that’s what sets you apart. As you continue creating, allow your content to evolve and develop alongside you. Your authenticity is valuable, so let it shine through your work without reservation. It's essential to have a supportive community of fellow creators who can provide helpful feedback and encouragement. While considering their input, always stay true to yourself and your unique perspective. With determination, passion, and ingenuity, you can produce original content that will set you apart.

A fascinating read as always Brenda and I have to agree with most of the points you have brought to our attention here!
But.... (always a quick but with me)!!
When used correctly AI can certainly help us to improve our productivity... obviously not just copy and paste the same unaltered bog standard c#@p that a lot of people do, but with the right prompts and additional personal touches it can be a real time saver...
Not for all of us I agree, but I am currently learning all I can about it, let's see if it pays off down the road!!
Much appreciated as always my friend, and I sincerely hope that you feel better soon, rest up ok and catch up again very soon! :-)
Ideas can certainly be gleaned from it Brenda, and a whole lot more as well!!
I would never copy and paste directly anything that an AI tool has produced, but using the right prompts and teaching it how to produce content as we each do as individuals in our own unique writing styles, saves a heap load of time.....
And for me, time is the most precious commodity we have!!
I hope you are feeling a little better now my friend, rest well ok....:-)
Well said, Brenda! I delete posts that wreak of AI! Sooner rather than later there will be less authentic posts, and that is a shame in my opinion! That is also just one of the many reasons that I will not embrace AI. It cause more problems than it solves, in my opinion!
Jeff
Interesting post on a subject I need to look into more
That said, I wouldn't be adverse to using AI to curate content, making it original to me.
I do agree that producing your own content, whether it's original, curational or curiginal makes a big difference
Very true, Brenda. 👍
Unfortunately, getting factual information from the Internet or any other source and putting in our own words won’t necessarily make unique, even if it has our writing style.
Happy Friday! 😎

Hi Brenda
I agree that it is possible to create unique content, but we can also define “unique” in ways that are misleading, even if not purposely so.
To me, “unique” is creating something new out of thin air or by combining previously established information or principles.
We all have our criteria for defining uniqueness.😎
Frank 🎸
Hi Brenda
Yes, it’s certainly easier to be unique in the more creative disciplines.
For example, there are many song rearrangements that are very unique, for the better or worse..
My wife has this thing she likes to do when she hears me playing a guitar.
She’ll say “Oh, that’s from” and then names a particular song.
I’ll think about it a minute and realize she recognized a particular riff amongst all those notes that is part of the song she named. Lol
It’s both flattering and annoying. Haha
And, yes, I certainly do miss my days living in Italy! 😎

Great post-Brenda As we learn about all the proper ways to use AI, I think it is excellent for outlining all around and saving time.
In a way, when you do research for a blog, you still are reproducing what someone else wrote. You are just putting it in your own words.
AI is so much faster and pretty accurate most of the time; however, I have caught it before with inaccurate Information a time or two.
I have checked it for plagiarism, and believe it or not, it is usually only 3 to 4%, which I think is interesting.
Kyle and Jay are sure handing down great info. It has me experimenting all the time. It's fun checking it out. I do think so far that original content ranks better.
I hope your weekend is fantastic!
Chet
Hey Brenda, you are so correct. What I have started doing is when I use prompts, I copy and take it to Grammarly to finish writing.
There, I can check for plagiarism and write it in my own words based on what AI contributed to the content.
Most of the time, I still don't have to rewrite very much. But I still have to check thoroughly.
