I Just Realized...I'm 100 Percent Dog!

Yesterday I took my 14y/o mixed breed dog to the vet to be euthanized. She was in ailing health and deteriorating fast. She's been a great companion over those years and it was time to release her from her suffering.

While at the vets office I saw a plaque on the wall with the following inscription. "It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are. - Unknown.

Over the last 30 years Lauren and I've been married we've had 7 dogs. Over that period of time five of them lived a total of 65 years before they passed on. Since I'm 65y/o I'm just an old dog. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

What a sweet poem Thom! I have never seen it before. I am so sorry for your sadness, I know how hard it can be to go through the loss of a beloved pet.

I know exactly what you said. We have loved so many dogs over the years and our dog just left us as well. We will always remember the love and comfort he gave us. We now have a new dog (Corgie) and what a character he is. Our prayers are with you.

Thanks! We have another 14y/o one but she's still going strong. We also got another Lab puppy. He's 61/2 months and quite the rascal.

I am so very sorry to hear this sad news of your beloved friend. I love that quite, and it is very, very true. Thank you so much for sharing. Sometimes we find the things we need for comfort at the very time we need them!

Thank you!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

That's sad, poignant and uplifting all in one. All the best to you Thom.

Hi Thom! -

That must of been a tough thing - for you to have to do!

But at the same time - comforting to know she isn't suffering anymore.

I know how you feel, we recently had to do the same with our sweet old dog. That is a great quote and I appreciate you sharing it. Thank you.

I'm so sorry you lost your baby, Thom. We lost our 15-year-old German Shepherd in June. I've seen that poem and I firmly believe it. I'm right behind you agewise, so I don't mind being an old dog either. I like most dogs better than most people, as snarky as that sounds.

Thanks Carla. I've certainly seen more people I don't like than dods

Dogs are the most friendly animals.

Bless you, you did the kindest thing for her, it hurts but we always know we've done our best. :)
