What to Give for Christmas

What to give for Christmas can be a grueling task, one that I often struggle with. We usually prefer to give something that is from our heart. Something that will be well liked and enjoyed. But there are times when we feel the need to give something more practical or needed rather than wanted.

I used to like, when a child, getting that crisp money in a card for Christmas. I could use it to buy whatever it was that I wanted. Of course, that was with my parent's approval. As an adult, I find that giving that money is often the easy way out. I mean to say that it requires no thought toward the person that I am giving it to. That's not bad or wrong. Generally, it is because I don't know that person well enough to know what he or she would like that I might be able to give them.

One thing that I did not want to find on Christmas morning was clothing that was not cool. You know socks, underwear, or stuff such as that. When a youngster gets items like that, they are not considering the need for the gift. The giver was trying to fill a practical need. Now that I am an adult, I can appreciate such a gift. My one child this year needs heating oil. I do not like the idea of giving her heating oil as a present, but she very well needs it with her family. That is my dilemma for this season. I know that some of the nieces and nephews will get the money in the card. That is because we don't get to spend the time with them to know their likes or wants.

I have a Christmas club that allows me a budget for shopping. Each year my wife and I try to specialize each person on our list. Some will get that gift that makes their eyes light up. There will be some that receive a more practical gift. And then there will be those that we will give them something just to let them know that they are not forgotten by us and we love them. So I have concluded that whomever I give to, I want to give thought toward each person. Not to give as a chore but to how my gift will be best for them. So be it a custom piece of jewelry or a tank of fuel oil or money in a card, just make it from your heart.

I love Christmas! I've never been fussed about receiving gifts, but I do love giving them to my children and grandchildren, the look on their faces - Priceless!

Absolutely! Thanks for your comment.

Christmas is the season to give your greatest gift - love!!!

Amen, my friend!

Thanks buddy

I am one who likes that idea of giving and receiving money especially since I like stuff that most of my family don't think about --stuff in the natural health/living category. So, I like to take whatever money I have and spend on that. I like giving money because sometimes what a person needs in order to really have that Merry Christmas is to pay some bills, they just feel it not polite/social to say so.

I enjoyed your post; Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to you.

Peace.

Thank you for your comments. That is the reason for the season, to give thought and love to the receiver of the gift.

May you also enjoy this Holiday season!

Bruce

I am more the practical sort to present giver so I have found out. I am also prone to making them as well.
This year we are keeping ti simple as the children (3)are adults away from home, and single (2), with only one grandchild. We will be celebrating getting together for the first time in a very long time, priceless.... I am one very excited Mum.

Cheers

Giving from the heart is the best gift I have found.

I am giving everyone fishing lures. (Just kidding!) Our kids work hard and are doing well, but we usually get some kind of a small trip for them so they can enjoy rather than giving them a gift they don't need or money that they will use to pay bills.

That is a gift that they soon won't forget and they will remember it for awhile. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for sharing

Between us, my husband and I have 7 children, one grandchild, countless nieces and nephews and a lot of close family and friends. When it comes to Christmas time, I focus mainly on our kids and grandkids and I make gift baskets with hand-crafted items for everyone else, It is difficult to balance wants, needs and also not give in to materialism. I say give the gift of heat! It is a truly thoughtful, practical and long lasting gift! Thank you for your thoughtful post! - Joy

I like giving more too but sometimes it is hard to decide on what to give.

The decision is not always easy, just follow your heart and make sure it is full of Love.

I agree. I love giving gifts just as much as receiving them...probably more! I start shopping early (when I see the perfect thing for someone I get it even if it is 6 months early) so that I am not rushing out to get a gift and feeling pressured to just buy something.

Thank you for your comment. I hope you have a delightful Thanksgiving and the Merriest Christmas.

Bruce

You too.
