Don't get stuck picking a niche

I've only been here a few weeks, but I figured out something that helped me a lot and wanted to pass on the advice.

There is a lot of great training here and it has all been easy to follow. Making things like not only building a website but learning how to bring traffic to it and monetize it also seem fairly easy.

So far, the toughest part for me was picking my niche.

I got stuck and thought about it way to much.

- There are a lot of things that I am interested in.
- A handful of them I am very passionate about.
- There are some things I have a lot of knowledge about
- And only a few things that I would consider myself in a position to give people advice on.

What was going to be the thing I wanted to put so much time into?? What if I picked the wrong one and wasted all that time?!

Well, here's what I did that helped me:

  1. I thought about my interests and picked two.
    - They were kind of general categories and not as specific as a niche should be.
  2. I started two free sites using the siterubix website.
  3. Made sure on each site that I picked a name general enough that I could talk about different topics and still be relevant in the category.
    - Your domain and your site name is your brand. It does not have to have keywords in it, so don't get stuck on trying to figure out your path.
  4. I started writing and looking for keywords relevant to my subject and it lead me to various topics that inspired me to write things that I didn't plan on.
  5. When I got into looking at affiliates, I would search for a certain product and would find another that gave me an idea to write about. I could then write a post and put links to the product.

So then I am giving myself the opportunity to make money on a product that I didn't even consider.

Now I understand why the brand is more important than having keywords in your site name.

I have my brand which applies to a category. And then as I build the site I can target specific audiences by focusing my content on a more specific niche. As I put more time into it, I can add on additional niches that are under an umbrella of the topic.

But be careful, you don't want an extremely general category making broad of an audience.

For example: Food.

Your target audience, would essentially be everyone. That's way too general.

So maybe try Home Cooked Meals instead. Still too general, but name your site that has something to do with that.

As you start out writing, you will create a niche in your site without thinking too much into it. Say you start out by talking about ways to make chicken in the crockpot. There, you have your first niche! Now write more about that subject and talk about products you use.

Then say you start writing about ways to cook gluten free, here is your second niche. Continue writing more about that topic and review some gluten free flours. There you have it!

Now you have multiple niches building on one site, and they all relate to home cooked meals.

Now why did I make two sites then?

A few reasons:

The main benefit of this is that when I get stuck on my main site - writers block or just over thinking things too much - I can take a break from it without loosing my momentum. I then maybe spend a day working on the other site, either cleaning up the design or writing posts.

It gives me the opportunity to come back to my site with fresh eyes. Sometimes when you stop thinking about something, that's when the best ideas pop into your brain out of nowhere!

I chose two different categories that I was interested in. They were completely unrelated so it would be weird for visitors to see them on the same site. I ended up buying a domain for both categories and building a site for each one.

I tried getting both sites up to par at the same time, and I found that I should just focus on one of them at a time. What I recommend is choosing one that is your main goal and focus on it.

But get the second one set up, bare bones at least. What I did specifically that really worked for me:
I picked one general subject that I was very interested in and built it step by step following the Online Entrepreneur Certification training.

Moments where I would loose focus or get discouraged, I would bounce over to the Affiliate Bootcamp and follow those lessons building my second site promoting WA. I am also using it to chronical my journey here using the blog on that site, which serves my purpose of promoting this awesome community.

Then I could bounce back to my main site and put all of my energy into it.

So don't get stuck on picking your specific niche!

Pick a subject that you are interested in. You don't have to be an expert, you will learn about it along the way.

As you move along in your category, you will figure out your niche. And then the more you build on it, you can have multiple niches on one site.

Don't over think it too much, just enjoy the process. No matter what subject you choose, there is a market for it so don't worry. Once you get the ball rolling, you will find so much that you can add to your content!

Best of luck to you!

Ok. So what are your sites?

MyGoodDog.com and MoneyForMama.com
I don't have them on my profile because I don't feel that they are ready to be seen. I know Kyle says don't wait to start getting traffic, but I have a lot more work to do before I'm ready to show them off. But since you asked, here they are. The main site I am working on is MyGoodDog.com. I have not put much work into the other yet.

You're a hell of a lot further than I am. Keep at it. Best of Luck

Thanks so much!

Great post Angel! I think we all went through your struggle. .lol..

Works for me too, at the beginning it was more Luck than Design.....
