Hi everyone, I've learnt so much since being a part of Wealthy Affiliate. I am working my way through the training, trying to do everything before ticking the box and moving on, and I am confident that in time I will achieve what I set out to achieve.

I haven't had a 'job' for the last 12 years due to health issues - I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 and it spread to my bones and various other places in 2008. When I got the secondary diagnosis my daughter was only 18 months old, I was in very poor health, and a fixed-term employment contract was not renewed when it expired. And just like that, at 41, I was beyond employment, ill and undergoing horrible treatment, but definitely not ready for retirement or worse.

It took me a while to get better physically and mentally, but I have come through it a much stronger person. For the last 12 years I have been on the same cancer treatment, and it is working. I feel incredibly lucky, and am determined to make the most of every day and every experience. I saw my daughter go to primary school and then to secondary school, which is more than I thought possible in 2008. Now I aim to be able to support her through her main exams in 3 years' time.

Feeling the need to contribute financially to my family, I tried various ways to earn money since being forced to 'retire' - multi level marketing for a greetings card company initially, which I didn't feel comfortable doing because it was basically pitching to friends and family, and earning peanuts (even though the cards themselves were gorgeous).

Then I started my own business, and had great fun with that for three years, although it didn't work out financially in the way that I wanted it to. Now I'm designing and selling knitting patterns for teddy bear clothing, and love it, but I can't really see that ever being more than a fun sideline (although who knows?). And then I found out about Wealthy Affiliate.

Sept 2020 update: Lockdown in the UK took its toll on my ability to follow through with the WA training and website building - my daughter was doing home schooling from the end of March right through till the summer holiday, and then of course she was home all during the summer. Plus my husband started working from home - and still is! - and I have to admit that I have found it really difficult to carve out 'me' time to work on my WA stuff. I imagine (hope!) many others have found it hard too, I hope I'm not the only one. Anyway, I think the break was good for me, because it has helped me assess my progress, and even my niche. I am thinking that the niche I chose initially was too broad, and I am in the process of deciding on a new niche, which means a new website, a new beginning really. I've probably forgotten all the early training to do with setting a website up, so I may have to go back to the beginning. But it's all worth it, if I end up with a site in a niche where my voice may be heard.

I am confident that here I can learn what I need to learn to succeed in affiliate marketing. It's going to be hard work, but I love a challenge and am really motivated.

Apologies if this is too much information!

HI Alison,
Thanks for adding me to your network. No work for 12 years. I hope you have control of your health now. Things like that can have a serious effect on you mental well being, but it's great to be in a place like WA, keeping your mind active in a community of positive helpers. I pray that it is all going well for you.

Hi Ali: You've stared down your mortality at a time when you had major responsibility and came out the other side. You sound like someone who perseveres through adversity and then moves on. We all need that kind of discipline when it comes to something like affiliate marketing which has a lot of moving parts to it and seems to be a long learning curve, ever changing. I wish you much luck in your future pursuits and agree that small business endeavours will not get us where we want to be in terms of financial freedom. Affiliate Marketing can work if we don't quit and if we do the necessary work. You don't sound like a quitter so the only way is forward. The Italians have a saying: sempre avanti - ever onward.
