I've got a mate called Jimmy well I must be one of his friends he sends me emails every day. Yesterday it was 5 all for products that are going to set my business and life on fire.

He doesn't know me very well, I have to use a fire extinguisher almost daily to cool things down and I am so glad that I have friends and associates around me that tell me when I am dreaming and other really cool ways to keep me in check.

Well back to friend Jimmy, he/she arrived on the scene 12/6/2020 in the ensuing forty-five days he has sent me 285 emails. All promoting some kind of product he/she doesn't use and going by the verbiage he/she doesn't understand. The icing on the cake the link in most of the emails goes straight to the purchase page. Who needs a landing page these days anyway?

Should I just click the spam button and send him/her to spam hell where they belong?

What would you do? I would be keen to hear your thoughts.

Well, Jimmy is not alone, there seems to be more than a few marketers on the cusp of going bad. It's a numbers game right, send enough emails and some will hit their target, wrong you are treating your audience like fools.

Never ever treat your audience like fools, one of the best ways to get nowhere fast. Poor Jimmy didn't attend that day or skipped that lesson.

Then again I shouldn't be too quick to criticize.

A list of say 500, at 5 emails a day 2500 emails per day, The odds are someone will click through and buy. Today his list shrinks by 1 to 499, at a guess it will shrink more than that.

The logic sticks out like a sore thumb, a shrinking list, Jimmy thinks " the more emails I send the more sales, make hay when the sun shines".

"That will ensure I keep making my 6 figure income!"

Brilliant idea for creating a few sales today, long term not the best way to create and maintain a supportive list of followers.

Perhaps it is the times we are living in and folks are under pressure and are driven to take risks that under other circumstances they wouldn't.

To be fair in the beginning there were several emails that delivered some value, then the flow changed, and not even the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff was going to save Jimmy's contradictory email copy.

Just sharing some reflections as I delete all of Jimmy's emails and unsubscribe from his or her list.

The other end of the spectrum.

Then on the other end of the scale is that email list that you subscribe to that offers value and, and, and, you are still waiting to receive the first newsletter and the carrot which was going to be delivered straight to your inbox. Even after confirming your email address, MIA.

That Affiliate possibly attended the same school as Jimmy?

That sweet spot

In the middle of the stream, that's where the income is, that happy mix, of value, information, lite-on sales with well-written copy that rings of a message and greetings from a friend. At the heart of it, we know what we like and don't like, we like to be treated as we treat others.

For some marketers, that message is lost and the list and audience are seen as nothing more than a potential personal atm machine. In our super-connected world, it is easy to spot the difference, we are all online and most of us are super aware when someone is taking us for granted.

We all receive emails and It doesn't hurt to do that email tidy up, it can remove a lot of noise. Don't be afraid to make the unsubscribe link your friend. Perhaps we send emails, it can be helpful to be aware and pull back if we think we are becoming a bee in someone's ear, treat the list with respect, from observation you will be rewarded.

I would enjoy hearing your thoughts.

Hi Alex,

Multiple emails a day gets old real fast!

I can tolerate one a day if there is some kind of value or I respect its source.

3 to 5 a week could be a healthier choice.

Multiple emails a day most pushing a sale... time to unsubscribe.

I have one like that... soon to be bye bye.

Hi Mel from reading the comments it seems that we are all of the same frame of mind.

If value is being delivered then it is good in moderation.

A conveyor belt of sales pitches, gets old very fast, so true.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Mel.
Alex.

You are most welcome Alex!

Good afternoon Alex,

In January of each year, I do a spring cleaning on my computer. I have labels for emails of friends, WA people, newsletters of doctors and environmental organizations, etc, etc.

I take a serious look at all I have kept and then an even more serious deleting starts. On top of that, I often unsubscribe to a lot of things that come in regularly.

I can tell you it gives a great feeling to have a slimmed down computer. I wish I could do the same to myself.

Greetings from the south of Spain,

Taetske

Hi Taetske, happy new year.

I like your style and thank you so much for sharing. Having a systematic approach can work wonders. Keeping on top of our emails can be great way to keep on top of the stress levels and also keep the information flowing.

Having a computer running efficiently is a great feeling and productivity boost. You will be feeling all the better as well. A picture post card.

Have a great year Taetske.

Alex

Good Morning Alex,

I hope you will also have a productive and healthy year.

Here Filomena came to visit and swept over the country. In the south heavy rain with in Malaga 200 liter in a short time causing flooding and damage. In the middle and north unprecedented snowfall. In Madrid people on skies and somewhere inland recorded -29C. The storm started the evening before 3 Kings and lasted some days. I was without electricity for 28 hours and am happy my deep freezer just made it.
On Feb the 2e I will get my second eye operation and somewhere along the line my new tooth. As you can see, never a dull moment.

Greetings from the south of Spain,

Taetske

I heard about the storm that lashed your country, so challenging Taetski. Is it Just me or the winter storms getting harsher.

You will be so pleased to get your eye operation and new tooth.

Never a dull moment for sure.

Alex

Good Morning Alex,

Yes, the weather patterns are becoming more extreme. Here in Spain it is getting drier, and in other places there is too much water.

We will have to learn and deal with it as humanity is not willing to mend its ways.

Have a good Sunday,

Taetske

Checking the 'junk' folder has become a necessary daily task, just in case something important slips through.
After a day of not logging in and being faced with just shy of two hundred emails, I decided that this week I would make a point of unsubscribing from as many as I could. It has been well worth the effort.
I am happy to entertain some of them and let them run for a while, sometimes we actually get something useful from them.

So true Twack, most providers can have their princess moments and condem the good to bad.

Definitly worth the effort to tackle the inflow, in higher numbers it can be hard to keep tabs on things.

A mission that I am on at the moment as well. Hence the reflections in this post.

Alex

Ironic as it is, I consider it time well spent.

It is time very well spent, Twack, agreed.

I used to subscribe to a lot of things like this with so so much hope... unfortunately, there are so many that even when you try and unsubscribe from them they still keep sending you things. How is this even possible. In the end I had to get a new email address. I learned the hard way. this was about 10 years ago. Thankfully I have found WA and will never sign up to nonsense again!

Hi Mairi thank you for your response. I think many reading will be able to relate. While searching for the online way there is a tendancy to sign up to everything under the sun.

It is random you unsubscribe yet the emails continue to come, you can end up on more than one list of the same guys and you may have unsubscribed they have not unsubscribed you.

I like what you have said regards WA, the searching can be over.

Alex

Definitely bin Jimmy, as quickly as possible. I have just started an email list for my eCommerce website. Mostly for people who purchase, so I can notify them of sales and freebies. I do not intend to publish a newsletter at present as it is basically just a storefront.

But I will be looking for ideas to add value to my customers.

Alex

Good suggestion, Alex.

Best wishes with your email list, with ecommerce a great way to keep in touch with customers and if you can provide good follow up information a win win for future sales.
