I have read in a few places that personal blogs are tough to monetize, but what if you're "selling" a personal story - like that the fact that I lost 100 pounds in 6 months, gai

Hey Adam,

I was looking for members who were having personal websites/weblogs and I found you. I have a new personal blog which is my online diary. I'm sharing everything that I know or passionate about, like travel, motivation, my journey towards achieving my goals etc.

Of course I won't make money by having a personal website or blog but we need to first have plans, right? So, my plan is to get many readers or followers. And then, we'll see how it goes.

I think you have great plans. Follow what your heart says.

You know what... actually... Follow your passion, money will follow later.

All the best.
Jenn

p.s. my personal blog is not shared here yet. But if you like to have a peek, let me know. Cheers...

Personal blogs are a great idea, but be warned don't turn it into a me marketing campaign, just because you have lost weight it doesn't mean other people will believe that they can do the same

Make you blog about your readers and give them solutions to their problems and then you can monetize it, no problem

The big mistake in internet marketing is people believe that expertise sells products, this is not true, what sell products is your ability to prove to your followers that they can do the same as you have done.

If you can demonstrate to your followers that they can loose weight by giving away free helpful content that actually works, then you will be onto a goldmine

This is what most marketers say "Look at me, I have lost weight so buy my product and you will too".

This is what goes on the mind of the follower - "I don't believe I can achieve the same results as you"

Your job is to change that mindset, you can only do this if you give away real solutions which change their lives for the better, once you have done that, then they will, not only follow you but buy from you as well

Barry! So very perceptive and I appreciate your candor. You are, of course, absolutely correct. Mindset. Interesting choice of a word there as that is EXACTLY the approach that I will be taking - you must control the mind to be successful at losing weight (or anything else, really). I really think that this is where my being open and honest about losing the weight improperly the first time, gaining it back, and then losing it again (as everyone watches) will help. I am excited to put something out that actually helps people. Don't get me wrong, money is great, but I already make a good living - I want to change my lifestyle and help others better theirs! Thanks again! You've got me all pumped up! Peace, Adam

As someone who has struggled in this area all my life ... and continues to do so to this day ... I would read that blog. The key is to make yourself human, likeable, temporarily failable but successful in the end, and maintain a real empathy, and sincerity in helping your fans. By sharing your story, your failures and successes, and giving them something great to use or to hang on to ... I'm sure it could work well. Melody

Melody! What an excellent response and I truly thank you for it. That's the best thing about all of this is that I DO empathize with people who have struggled to lose weight or keep it. Great practical suggestions on how to share my story as well - excellent. The strangest part of losing the weight and gaining it back and trying to lose it again is how many times my mind tells me "You can't lose 100 pounds" - I ALREADY HAVE and my mind is playing that game with me! Again thank you so much for your encouraging words - it means the world to me. Peace, Adam

I'll be your first follower ... maybe you can even help me! lol

That's what it's all about! Helping people - if I could make my living helping others to get healthy (rather than just pushing code releases all day!) I'd be a mighty happy man :) Peace, Adam

Branding is often more powerful than a personal blog. This isn't to say that over time you couldn't develop a personal brand.

Look at Seth Godin or Robert Kiyosaki. Both Personal Brands. But these guys got started with their business brands and branched out. Seth with Squidoo and Robert with Google.

Excellent point. It seems oddly narcissistic for me to be talking about building myself as a brand, but that is exactly what I plan to do. I also have the 2nd act planned which is to launch "GetHealthtea" a line of teas, organic herbs, essential oil - all that aid in the process of meditation, nutritional support, proper body function, etc. This is NOT alternative medicine - simply support for the body and brain. I have found through my weight loss and weight gain that the BRAIN is the most important muscle in the fight against obesity. Sadly it's the one most pay the least attention to. Peace, Adam

If your personal blog happens to focus on a profitable niche that's fine. You probably won't monetize a blog writing about what you had for breakfast followed by what your favorite spots team did in the last game followed by the idiot you got stuck behind at the store today ....... see where I'm going with this?

Steve, I see. So the personal blog is bad when you are just documenting your day to day life - UNLESS your day to day life happens to focus on a niche that can make some money! It has to be written correctly as well I presume - "I woke up, ate oatmeal and then rode the bike for 45 minutes" is probably NOT going to cut it! LOL. Thank you. Peace, Adam

Exactly! :)

Hi Adam! -

Sounds like a plan to me!

I guess you will be monetising your blog with the products you have used?

** Have A Great Productive Day! **

David

David, yes - books, products I have used, equipment I have purchased, etc. The real end goal is to document the process for people, suggesting what has helped me, etc. I will offer recipes, meditations, diet and exercise tips, etc., as a way to build my list. Then once the weight's off and the entire process is documented I start to begin releasing my own products. Peace, Adam

Well Adam - I think the idea has legs - but you MUST target profitable Keywords!

I tell ya David - that is EXACTLY why I signed up for WA. I could tell within 30 minutes that this was the place to teach me everything I need to know about marketing online. I can build the sites all day long - it's the marketing that I need to master! Peace, Adam

Remember take things slowly - one baby step after baby step - as soon as you feel comfortable get something up online for the World to see - don't worry if it's not good enough to share right now - just make a start - we need to do lot's of testing and tracking and tweeking!

The Main thing - Make A Start!!
