New User Registration on Your Website
For this week I now regularly receive notice from WordPress that sombody registered as a new user on my website. Currently on two of my websites.
This new user registration came when I allowed membership by checking the "anyone can register" box.
Is there anyone among us here who have done this? Is this good for the site? What are the pros and cons?
Thank you for your answers and your indulgence in sharing your experiences.

Hello Jimmy. For awhile I was getting that notification very often, and I didn't know why. It made me feel uneasy, and it turned out to be a spammer. Site Support changed my settings to not allow anyone but me to register as a user. When I saw your heading, at first I thought I was being told that it had happened again. Glad that wasn't the case, because I haven't made any changes since Site Support fixed things for me.
You're welcome. Hope all is well with your website. If not, I'm sure Site Support can help you.
I had the same problem. As others have said Uncheck that box and delete any ‘users’ from the list. Cheers Robert
I don't think so. Just it says that somebody has registered on the website as a member. I've tried to contact one of those but no response. If they are real people they should state the reason why they registered as a member of the site.
New user registrations in this manner are one of two things, either someone subscribing to your latest post or SPAMMERs looking to post unchecked comments. Sadly you will get hundreds of SPAM Bots to every legit follower using this method so it's better to lock them out and have a subscription method other than joining your site.
I too tried to find and reply to the notices, to no avail. Site support checked and my site"s in good standing.
This is a VERY good thing! It's not your password being changed but your new user's passwords. These are people that are FOLLOWING YOU!!! It's very exciting and excellent for your site. Check this out: BOOOM! WordPress New User Registration.
I would strongly disagree with the article you are linking to. Unless you actually have a membership site, you should not allow people to register.
And for a regular website, it should be turned off as many other people also mention here in the comments.
Thank you, I read Nerissa's post and what she says is what you all say here. Although she has the BOOOM!
You WANT new users to sign up to follow your site! Check out the key phrase "new user registration" in the search above and perhaps you'll understand.
Look up OTHER posts on the same subject! You'll see what I mean. I'm not going to do all the work for you myself! You're top 200, you should know how to search!
Mine is a membership only site.
Clicking the box will not deter opt-in members, will it?

I had this at the beginning and my first few blogs,
I was concerned too and asked support for advice
It was pointed out to me that yes it can be a reader liking a blog or on the worst case scenario a spammer,
however i haven't had spam so far, and they cant edit or change anything on your site they don't have permission or access.
So for me i have left it open and have collected a few more that seem genuine, and negative aspect for allowing it,
I believe a reader may apply to keep you as a FAVORITE?
If later i see problems i can remove or make changes, no loss
Chris
Thanks, Chris. You know, that's how I think about this. I'll try to observe what it entails on the website. You are right they cannot make any changes to the website since it is not theirs.
