Australia. Bushfires
Today we are safe after being evacuated for a week while the heroic fire fighters protected our horse stud in the Snowy mountains half way between Melbourne and Sydney.
So many of our neighbours and small villages very close to us were burnt out. We survived un-touched but it was close, very close.
Every single Australian acknowledges the amazing and tireless effort put in by all emergency services working together.
Special thanks to those who died in the line of duty, volunteers and professionals. A special acknowledgement and thanks to the three men from U.S. who came to help but who perished in their water carrying aircraft, and that tragedy was in my area. The distress we all feel when a hero is killed is palpable.
We decided to leave when a large red glow came up over our tree line on a hill just outside our back door.
After a week living in our caravan with my two Burmese Thelma and Louise, we are allowed home but still on alert. Today the smoke has gone after many eerie weeks and there is a glorious blue warm sky.
The week we spent as evacuees was surreal, with thick smoke, daily meetings for fire updates, evacuees sleeping on mattresses in the town hall, all the emergency services gathered in this nearby town with us, constant fire news on radio and through the emergency apps. Impossible to think of anything else plus the heat was unbearable, 40 degrees plus.
I took that week off WA. I could not concentrate!
I am writing as one of the lucky ones and I will be forever grateful for each and every individual and organisation who gave their all to the task at hand. So many fabulous strangers came into my life during these weeks. I will never forget the love and care given so freely.

I have no way of knowing what you have been through. I have friends that experienced the devastating fires here in California. For them it was terrible, but nothing like the scale that you had to live through. It is wonderful that you are okay. Thanks for giving us this update.
I can't even begin to imagine all that you and your fellow countrymen have been through with the fires. It is beyond heartbreaking. Glad you are ok. So very sad to hear of the loss of any life in such a way, both human and animal. And to learn that somebody is setting these fires is unfathomable.
Thanks for letting us know you're ok. Many hugs from San Antonio!
Christine
So glad you are ok and so is your house. It really is a terrible thing to watch on tv from so far away. I live in the US and couldn't do anything from here other than sends prayers of hope to keep everyone safe. I hope the country comes together even stronger and can move forward in celebration of all the men and women who helped tirelessly without wanting anything in return.
All the best
Douglas
Yes it must be rewarding for the responders to see people recovering and moving forward, I never thought about that. Humans are amazing
Wow! Wendy what an ordeal! These are very trying and times indeed! Happy to hear that you went through so much relatively unscathed and very sad that some of the selfless hero's paid the ultimate price in their efforts to help others. You and the people of Australia are in my thoughts and prayers!
Take care,
Rami.
You are very welcome. It always is but without them where would us mere mortals be?
Take care Wendy,
Rami.
you raise a valid point, I am overwhelmed when I see the firefighters getting ready to go and fight fire and usually in terrible heat as well 40 plus degrees. makes me realise how much I could never ever do this role of firefighting.
