Today, 71 years ago on Iwo Jima, US Marines raised the Flag!
In Memory of My Father, who was a survivor of Iwo Jima 71 years ago, and to those who served their countries in our terrible human struggle to become a civilized world. I pray that someday we will learn to solve our differences without conflict.
The United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) is a national monument in Arlington, Virginia, (USA). Dedicated 62 years ago in 1954. The War Memorial is dedicated to all US Marine Corps personnel who have died in the defense of the United States since 1775.
My Father, (RIP) was a survivor of Iwo Jima and when I ask him if he saw the flag being raised there on that day, He said " I was a little busy then but I did see the picture in Time mag 6 months later on board ship!"
"Those who do not remember History are commended to repeat it"

As a fellow Navy veteran, I can feel the pain of those who served...especially those who paid the ultimate price. It took a long time for me to readjust to ordinary civilian life and really you are never the same after the military experience. Even today when I hear a trumpet blast, I come to attention.
That's why I'm a FORMER Marine and not an X Marine! you never get over the Training. LOL Thanks Navy! :)
I would say thank you- Marines. My former ship the aircraft carrier USS Midway is now a museum docked at a pier in San Diego, California. You can google www.ussmidwaymuseum.com and take a virtual video tour on the computer. They really did a great job of displaying all the aspects of life on a carrier. The ship had a detachment of 150 combat ready Marines in addition to the 4000 sailors and airmen onboard - really a floating city. It is amazing just to think about what it cost in terms of money and supplies to operate on a daily basis.
I watched Pearl Harbor today on TV. I suppose that is why they showed it today. Great movie...

Hi William. Glad to see you again. Very nice tribute. This conflict was just a piece of war. The scary thing nowadays is far too many people do not remember history and one day we will repeat. Dave.
Wonderful tribute to not only your dad but those past and present veterans that continue to do so

Hi. Went looking for some fellow Marines and found your post. I went to Mt. Suribachi while I was in and left my dog tags there (it's a tradition). It was truly awe inspiring. Thanks for the post.
