Why I am choosing a different niche!

The problems

I have been working on my first website for more than 3 months and did not make any sales to say the least. The topic of the blog is where I try to help people overcome insomnia.

I also do mattress, cushion and white noise machine reviews. The problem with this niche is that people will rarely buy a mattress online, because they would rather test the mattress first before the buy it and it is also too expensive to make and ill informed choice like that.

Secondly the white noise machines will also be a problem, because it follows the same rules as buying a mattress. Personally I would not buy a white noise machine before I have tested the sound quality.

When it comes to the main topic of my site "insomnia" I rarely find a keyword that has a QSR below 200 as it is very competitive. I already have 500 visits to my website, so I think it might be enough data to make my choice.

So what can I do now?

  1. Firstly I can sell my website.
  2. I can put google adsense to at least get money for my traffic.
  3. or I can use ppc on highly competitive buyer keywords such as "buy mattress online", maybe I might make a profit from it.
  4. Or lastly I can stop working on this site.

What I am going to do about this?

1. Firstly I am going to put Google Adsense on it to see how much I am going to make per month. If I make money, I can keep the site.

2. Try some ppc on product review pages to test it out.

3. Go and look for how much I can sell it for and compare it against my previous options regarding the money I can make.

4. Try to publish a post each week or second one to keep the blog alive if I make a little money.

Did I really lose anything?

Regarding time and effort and can maybe say YES, but the little experience I gathered is priceless. I promised myself that I will not give that and it is personal promise that I made to myself and I am not going to break it. My English also improved a bit :)

My final advice

If you choose a niche, make sure that you can sell products where people will feel comfortable enough to buy online. Try to go for E-books and physical products where the customers do not need to test it with their senses.

If you are trying to sell something like perfume online, then you must reconsider your niche. Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions below.

Now what do YOU think is a good idea for an online niche?

Hi Valie! Thanks for directing me to this post.
It's nice to hear that even the websites we're least confident about will eventually end up being quite profitable.
I just have a few questions related to your post though.

• How is ppc different from google adsense? I looked it up and the description is the same.
• Did you host your website on wealthyaffiliate?
• Did you buy the domain on WA, or other registrars like godaddy?

Hi Gabriel

PPC means pay per click. Each time someone clicks on an ad that you placed, you will then have to pay a specific amount of money per click.

Google Adsense is a ppc type platform. PPC is paid traffic.

The website is still being hosted on Wealthy Affiliate.

I bought the domain through Namecheap in 2014.

I just looked at the keyword "why can i not sleep" and it has a qpr of 144. You need to give this longer than 3 months and play around with what people might enter as keywords. You will find good keywords. Other keywords I found. "ways to get a better night sleep", "what is the best way to get a good night sleep", ways to help you sleep". Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Olive

Thanks a lot for the keywords Olive. You gave me a couple of ideas :)

Just think like a person with the problem and what searches they might do. They might not use words like insomnia as they might not know they have it.

Hi Valie, I have come across a piece of training to do with finding the right niche and understanding the profitable areas in your niche. I thought you might be interested in seeing it: Show Me the Money…How to Quickly Identify Your Online Money Making Niche

Hope it helps. Lis.

Thanks Lauren. Lot's of different niches to look for. It looks like my current niche can fit well into that category.

Suggestion: In the long-term view of a 'website', 3 months is a drop in the bucket...many don't realize a sale/commission for longer periods than that....perhaps expand upon your niche, or use Amazon (in addition to Adsense, if can)....create your own ebook and 'sell' it....introduce additional products/services.....at the same time, if you like, another site can be created for another niche at same time...but don't throw it away simply because it's only 3 months, expand the horizon of your niche, overcoming insomnia also could involve stress relief, exercise, pillows/comforters, music, etc. ...anyway, think about it only you can decide what is best for you in the end.....

I guess my tourism niche is fine, people cant really test the product before they buy lol

Valie I see you have received good advice. The question you ask, is what should be my next niche? None of us know what works best for you. I would do like Rico (rocr7 ) did, blog a list you are considering and survey your follow. To see how he did it go to: Which one do YOU like... . By the way, if you aren't following him, I would recommend you do.

It is a very hard decision to make. All those hours into that website. I think it is a good idea to go for different types of products to help with insomnia.

But I am not going to put all my effort into this site. All I need is data to test if there is money to be made in this niche and that is why I will focus on PPC a bit to test this niche.

I do not want to work for one year on a site that will not produce and neither do I want to give up on an opportunity that might make it big. It is a very hard decision to make.

Thanks for all your input :)

Your welcome Valie, I fully understand the dilemma you are in. It is difficult. Please let us know how you get on and if we can help in anyway. Lis.

Hi Valie, it is a pity that you are changing your niche as your site was developing really good.

A suggestion.

As your niche was about insomnia, could you not explore and include other areas into your site, such as 'natural sleep aid reviews', 'electronic sleep aid reviews' or 'herbal sleep aid reviews' which may help with insomnia.

By doing this it allows you to add different products to your site and give people more option choices.

Lis.

It's the fact that choosing the good niche is the hardest part of the internet business.
We have to choose between what do I know about and between what is the profitable. We fight between 'don't give up' and 'choose something better'.
It is probably true that from this decision comes the winners and the losers.
What to say other. I don't have the answer what is the best niche in the world. :)
But yes all we are learning

Time spent learning is never "lost time". My original niche is proving problematic, too - and earning by promoting books is not a big money-maker.

You could try doing reviews of mattresses, white noise appliances, etc.
Some people DO buy "sight unseen". If you write rocking articles and sound like you know what you're talking about, people will feel comfortable buying the thing based on your advice.
