The Fort Gratiot Light House. Kids loved it. Lots of stairs to get to top. But I made it once before and I hope to get back here at the top again.

It is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan.

And its just another place to visit in the Great Lakes State of Michigan

Make sure that you bring closed toe shoes. They will not let you climb the lighthouse in flip flops or sandels. Trust me on this one, it is a pretty good climb to the top of it.

Let me know if you have been here before...

Or let me know about other Lighthouses....

Looks like lots of fun.

Yes, very cool to be able to walk to the top.
Not so cool coming down though.

If you do go, make sure to bring walking shoes. No open toe shoes allowed.

I now understand why.
Thanks for looking
Rob

I have been on the south to north interstate in Michigan and over the Mackinac bridge and into Canada. I remember lots of birch forests mostly.

Yes lots and lots of birch forest. But some pretty big lakes to go with them.

I have not been there, but I have been to several lighthouses on the East Coast from Maine to North Carolina. Love Lighthouses.
Thanks for this history lesson about Fort Gratiot Light!
Beautiful!

Your are welcome. Thanks for sharing

Have done a lot of boating on Lake Michigan in the past. It is a great lake and lots of great ports. Love the info on that particular lighthouse.

Thanks, it was a beautiful site from the top. The kids liked seeing another country so close to theirs, and the amount of freighters and sail boats.

looks lovely I have been to several light houses in my own country one of my favorites is Skerryvore light house

Were you able to climb up into them?

yes and it is quite the climb but great view when you get there you have to admire those who built them such harsh conditions to work in

I agree, and they are built to last!

Haven't been since I was a kid! And I'm a 'Michigander'!! :)

Contact them before you go. We were there and at the same time they were having a "sand castle building contest".

So try to make sure you visit at the same time.

Been there and had a grand time. One of my grandsons and his family live in Sarnia.

On the other side of the River... Yes we look at Sarnia all the time.
Did you see any freighters?
They just opened a restaurant called freighters on the U.S. side.
With you being a chef, I think you would enjoy it. Plus the amazing view.
Rob

Will be back that way this summer and will check it out. Thanks Rob

Cool.
