Hugo might be much different than WordPress, so it's hard to advise specifically for this content publishing platform. The basic principles of SEO should apply though, and that's basically that each page should have a target "topic" (keyword).

When looking at updating pages, you should ask yourself if the page already has a focus keyword. If so, you can simply expand on the topic (write more), and add more media (images, videos), to optimize it. If there is no focus topic, then perhaps the page should be deleted (assuming there's no traffic coming to the page).

Adding content or otherwise updating a page that doesn't have traffic and isn't about a specific topic would probably be a waste of time.

So you'd need to do this analysis on each one of your pages you are considering updating.

Hey Ty,

I'll admit I know absolutely nothing about gitlab and hugo, but SEO works in much the same way regardless.

The first thing to do would be check that these pages are actually indexed in Google first.

So, simply go to the Google search bar and type the following in EXACTLY (but obviously replace yourwebsitename with your ACTUAL website name)

site: yourwebsitename.com

This will then list all the pages and posts that are currently indeed by Google.

For now, you'll want to work on on-page SEO, and apply the very basics.

These would be:

title tags and description
Use of keyword in content (especially in H2, H3, H4, etc. tags - basically your subheadings)
Internal Links
External Links
Video
Image

You should also have an "seo-friendly" url, BUT I wouldn't suggest changing your url unless you have knowledge of redirects, etc.

Okay, let's just pick a topic so you can see how to do this.

Let's say that one of your pages is aboutTortola.

You would need to decide on a keyword that you would like to focus that specific page about.

So, let's say the "keyword" for that page is going to be

"Things to Do in Tortola"

Firstly, title tag - simply include keyword in your title.

"10 Wacky & Wonderful Things to Do in Tortola"

Now, you'll here a lot of SEO advice about having your keyword at the beginning of your title, and while this may have been the case for many years (and yet many so-called SEO experts still quote this as "fact") it certainly isn't as important.

Just include the keyword in the title and keep your title natural sounding.

Description - there's no specifics, SEO plugins provide 160 CHARACTERS for meta descriptions.

BUT

I would simply say that you should use your keyword in the first 100 words on your introduction.

"Tortola is the largest and most populated island of the British Virgin Islands. So, as you can imagine there are plenty of things to do in Tortola. And here's a list of my 10 favourites, see if anything catches your eye"

So, as you can see I have used the "keyword" (things to do in Tortola) in the first 100 words of my introduction.

You will then look to use the keyword again in your content, but without stuffing it in and doing so as naturally as possible.

Plus, your H2 tags (main subheadings) are a fantastic way to do this, and it's also great for SEO.

So, one of your subheadings could be something like

"Things to Do in Tortola For Water Sports Lovers"

Internal links - you will want to link to other pages on your site that are RELEVANT to this page.

So, that would either be another page about Tortola or another page talking about "things to do" on a certain Island.

And the text you use to link to the other page should be as relevant as possible to the page your linking to.

"While I'm on the subject of food learn more about the best restaurants in Tortola"

The words "Best Restaurants in Tortola" would be highlighted and link to a specific page on your site about that subject (this is known as anchor text).. plus, remember I'm just giving you examples here, I have no idea what is on your site.

Next, external links.

Do exactly the same as above, but link to someone else's website.

This should be relevant to your content, BUT NOT on exactly the same subject.

Perhaps you find an article on another website about the weather in Tortola. So, you link to that website using relevant anchor text again.

Video - find a relevant video on YouTube that you can embed on your page. You can even place a subheading before the video and use a variation of your main keyword (it DOESN'T have to be exact).

Finally images - save the images to your desktop by USING YOUR KEYWORD... Therefore the file name for these images include your keyword.

However, when you write alt text for your image don't try to fit your keyword in if it doesn't makes sense, your alt text should be as descriptive as possible of what you can see in the image (alt text is mainly there for those with visual impairment - so if your image is of a "beautiful beach in Tortola with people sunbathing" then say that!)

This is the the VERY BASICS of on-page SEO.

However, depending on your choice of keywords you wish to focus on you may or may not rank.

Without wishing to confuse matters, the lower the competition for a particular keyword, the easier it is to rank.

The higher the competition for a keyword, the harder it is to rank, and will typically require a "boost" in order to help it rank (off-page SEO).

As I say, this is the basics on on-page SEO, but can be applied to every piece of content on your website.

Hope that helps?

Thank you, ParthaGPT.

I would write quality, succinct content addressing issues about my niche with a good choice of targeted, searchable keywords worthy of your visitor's attention, onward sharing onto social media platforms for organic outreach.

You can do your pages; however, create an empty page and call it a blog, whereby you update with regular posts to drive organic websites to your services website or pages.

Thanks for your reply. We have hundreds of pages today on our site but none of them are set up for SEO. I would like to take advantage of what we already have and will be creating a blog page to continue to add content. My question is if there is a strategy around how to get web pages to rank similar to the strategy around blogging. I am assuming it is a similar strategy with key words?

You can change your pages to posts via a Post Type Switcher plugin. BUT

(It's essential to understand that this can impact your website's SEO, as search engines may have already indexed the page's content and linked to it from other websites.

If you change a page to a post, you should redirect the old page to the new post using a 301 redirect. )

You can review your pages or posts and edit them; they are not set in stone. You can edit all except changing the URL; if the URL changes to Google, it will be new, and any RANKING that has been done will be lost.

I am trying to install SMTP plugging because email is being seen as spam. However, I need to change DNS but cannot figure out where to do this. I purchased domain from Name

You can create unlimited emails at WA since you are using WA hosting. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/email

Your DNS settings at namecheap should be

ns1.mywahosting.com
ns2.mywahosting.com

Once that's updated properly, you then need to add your domain here inside WA:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/domains

Don't add any www to the beginning. Just MYDOMAIN.com

Your domain will then be available to use inside Wealthy Affiliate, whether you want to build a new website on it, or transfer your free SiteRubix website to the new domain.

Hope that helps! Let me know if it works for you.

Hi

Can you give us more details, like what email provider? Or are you wanting to transfer/point your domain to WA servers?

How to prevent email from being sent from looking like spam?
