Food For Thought (Nourishing The Neurons)

'Food for thought' is a term that we are familiar with, in essence it means that something makes us think, ponder, ruminate and ultimately, learn.

Back in the 'Good Ole Days' at school, just after the desks with inkwells were phased out, I had to give a talk, you know, in front of people. It was only my peers but I'd managed to avoid doing for weeks. Avoidance tactics only work for so long and the day came to dazzle my audience with witty banter. I think everyone was expecting something a bit 'Off piste'. Well they got that, a twenty-minute spiel about Psychology. I have no idea why I chose that, possibly because the only book I could lay my hands on to have a quick flick through was about psychology, who knows. Maybe it was to 'Stick it' to Mr.Meryck, or was it 'Merrick?' who was relishing the idea that I would buckle under the pressure. We used to call him 'Flipper' because he walked round with his hands rammed into his coat pockets and pushed out in front, so they looked like a pair of flippers. Young minds. One of my other teachers nicknames' was 'Newt' and to this day, I have no idea why.

The part I remember about the talk, was me trying to describe the three parts of the human mind. Conscious, sub-conscious and unconscious. I have no idea if I was accurate in my description, limited as my knowledge was. It went along the lines of this. Conscious is basically everything that;s going on around you right now, that you're aware of. Sub-conscious is anything that you can 'recall' at will. Unconscious is all the stuff that sits in the background that you don't have easy access to. As you can see, it wasn't dissertation material, I was about thirteen after all.

So we're carrying on with a theme of sorts. It's interesting that we generally forget about our

brains. They're just there, happily ticking along. We just assume they are what they are. It was what we were born with. Hard wired with a sticker on the back that says " No user serviceable parts contained within" Did you know your brain runs solely on Glucose. Does that mean if you eat loads of sweets then you have a well oiled, sleek, alert, computational CPU inside your cranium ? I think not.

The saying that gets thrown around is something like 'The brain is like a muscle, you have to exercise it regularly' That's true but it's not like a muscle, it doesn't get bigger but it can get better at what it does.'

'Exercise' for our brains means we have to use them. That can come in many forms and what works for you will depend on what you find easiest to concentrate on. In the UK, we used to have a test called the 'Eleven Plus' You'd take it in your last year of junior school prior to moving up into the big leagues, or high school. Aptitude ? I have no idea, I just know I was pretty abysmal at the questions. You know the type. 'Mary had three brothers and one sister, she was the third oldest, here brother was younger but older than two of his sisters, what was the name of Charlies cat ?' You get the idea.

Back to the brain. Omega 3, general consensus is that it's good for 'brainpower'. Hydration and rest will help. Puzzles will help. Reading will help. Training will help. That's right, training. When you learn, you create new pathways within the brain, you also stimulate old ones, if they are relevant to what is in front of you. I loved Biology when I was at school, especially genetics, dominant and recessive genes, yummy. Even now I can remember the glycosidic bonds and they're make-up, DNA and Transfer DNA. Then there's meiosis, mitosis, osmosis, lymphatic, sympathetic nervous system and the list goes on.

Why do I remember all of these things and more ? That would be because I loved the subject matter, it intrigued me, it had a 'wow' factor. All this stuff was going on inside me.

I enjoyed, so I learned, learned hard enough that it is still with me today.

In this world of affiliate and internet marketing, there is a huge amount of information that we

should at least familiarise ourselves with. If it's boring, mundane and sends you to sleep, you won't learn. We need to find ways to make it exciting and interesting. That also applies to our sites and the content we provide.

It's all very well someone telling you to keep going, you need to see this, read this or learn this but if you're hating every moment then it will be a waste of your time. Find another source. How long does your average search take ? Click on a few, the chances are, if you read a paragraph and want to read more then that's the one that will benefit you the most

The posts we read, the books we read, the video's we watch, if they entertain us then we will retain the message that is being given.

Find the one that you enjoy engaging with. Whether that's here at WA or elsewhere on the internet. There will be someone out there that resonates with you. Watch and read as much as you can, saturate yourself with them, immerse yourself.

See who others are mentioning in their posts and take some time out to have a look at some of their work. I have found vast amounts of amazing material just by following up on a name I saw in a post. I am always looking for new sources of knowledge.

Obviously, the training and resources here at WA are outstanding, that's a given but we have a World Wide Web of information out there to dip into to. Leaders, influencers, marketeers, guru's, if you like. All able to add to our 'Mind Portfolio'

Who else have you found to be the best 'teacher' or the best resource for learning ?

Ahhh...brain”storming” again eh Twack?!
I remember things best if they appeal to more than one sense. That’s why I like music in the background when I’m studying. If both my sight and hearing senses are being stimulated I learn better.
I think that’s why I love horses, they look good, feel good, smell good...appeal to multiple senses.
Thanks for more “brain food”!
KyleAnn

Hello KyleAnn, you point is well made and I concur. I think, guess really, it's our own way of filing. In the same way that we create Icons, folders, sub-folders etc. Each one being more specific. It has made me think about short term memory and how we sometimes struggle with it, maybe because it hasn't been 'filed' as yet.
All fascinating though. The smell of 'Lux' soap always reminds me of a certain time in my childhood.

Thank you for this latest brain-themed installment of this series. I enjoyed reading it. You write very well.

Brian

You're welcome Brian and thank you for your kind words. We often take so much of what are brains do for granted and in doing so overlook the fact that they are capable of so much more.

Everything is my best teacher. Like you, I see something or someone that resonates and I have to go and see. I ingest the information I feel I need and ignore anything that doesn't feel right.
Our brains don't grow bigger as such but apparently we can continue creating new neural networks well into our nineties if we continue to learn.

We do have to sift through some 'choice' pieces but if we take something away then it's job done. Good to know about cerebral longevity, still don't think I'll ever complete a cryptic crossword though.

Ahhh, the cryptic. Hubby usually asks me the tricky ones, lol.

Hi Twack, your knowledge, your posts how everything is presented never seizes to amaze me.
I think my brain went through a bit of exercise reading your post.

Thanks for sharing,
Michael

Large thank you Michael, I do use the Encyclopedia Internetica every now and then. These days I'd rather be exercising my brain than my body.

Hi Twack, they should go hand in hand. One promotes the other.

Michael

Hi Twack, the brain and the body should work together.

Michael

Totally agree.

T,
I have found so many mentors in my life, that I consider myself fortunate.

From my Massage profession to teaching, to WA, I have lost count of my 'guru' people...

Side note:

If Mary had 3 brothers, and 1 sister, Charlie's cat was named Bill.

See, that's why you would have passed the 11+, whereas I failed. Who cares how long it takes Jim to dig a hole.

🤣

Cool! that is wonderful, nice post.

Thanks Simiao, appreciate you dropping by.

Wow Twack! You just keep hitting it out of the park! The brain is a marvelous computer that must be turned on occasionally!
Great stuff.
Joe

Thanks Joe, you're right.
'Use it or lose it' as they say.

Synchronising is a powerful mind tool
And far unknown

As in reprogramming the subconscious ? Mind and body relationship ? Point me in the right direction Fleeky, please, as my interest is piqued.

There is endless stuff out there on reprogramming the subconscious, you just have to sort the wheat from the chaff. Works too, you can get rid of old programming you didn't realise you had.

Indeed, I was just wondering if I was missing a trick with 'Synchronising' or whether it was just a name for something I was already aware of.

Google Synchronising your mind and body.
When they have synchronisation, everything flows better. You are more aware of and in tune with your body and tend to make choices that are good for the whole without really thinking about it.
Can't think of another way of putting it, or a better way.
Hmmm.... I keep looking at the explanation but it doesn't seem quite right.
Clearly my brain is saying soon be time to clock off. It's 10.00 p.m here, another hour and I will be shutting down.

Sounds about right Linda. After 10pm it all goes a bit fuzzy round the edges.

That made me laugh because its so true,

Center in the midbrain... area between eyebrows

Third eye and pineal gland?

Excellent, thank you.

Yes

Thank you. Seems you study and have studied much that I have done, with widely ranging interests.

😜

The natural order is that we get to a certain point and then we stop and simply tread water, waiting until we retire to start living.

?????.....?????....?????????......???????

Better to immerse in continued learning.

It certainly makes for an interesting life.

To be honest, a lot of the quotes memes and the likes kind of loose their value when you are singing in the choir.

And folks are preaching to and at you, thought we were all here to sing.

For value searching out contemporaries who are singing their own tunes can help add a few zeros to the bottom line.

A great grist for the mill post Twack

"Grist for the mill" Although I understood in 'context' I had to look up the exact meaning and origin. Therein is the crux of the matter first hand.
We can 'fill our boots' if we have the desire.
Each generation will say there is nothing left to invent, all good ideas have already been 'taken' and to justify those statements, 'there's no point in re-inventing the wheel'
Not true to all and it may as well be us coming up with the next 'idea' or 'way of doing something' yet we need a catalyst.
If we read nothing, watch nothing and learn nothing, it doesn't take a PhD in mathematics to realise the product is nothing.

Always enjoy your replies Alex, thank you.

The generation that has it's foot in yesterday, will recreate yesterday.

And say hey look, this is how you do it.

The thing is some of our contemporaries are indeed reinventing the wheel today.

Continued and applied learning, is the key.

Your posts are refreshing reads, young Twack. Keep em, coming.

Currently working my way through a backlog of 'notes'. I must make sure I add more detail to them though, as some, well I have no idea what I was on about.
