Pinterest is an online Scrapbooking program. If you can find an image on the internet, Pinterest will allow you to connect it to your account.

Your account is organized into folders (Pinterest calls them Boards) Each board can have a title and will accept multiple images. Your followers can look at the images, click on them to go to the embedded URL or even, if they like the image, can rePin them on their own boards. If you have a popular image, it can spread quickly throughout the Pinterest user base.

The big drawback of Pinterest is that it is an invitation only site. There are a couple of ways to get around this.

  • You can request an invite on the main page of Pinterest. This will place your request in a Que and in a couple of days you will get an e-mail that will allow you to create an account.
  • You can ask for an invite from a member of WA. This can be done on the Live Chat, via PM to me (Labman) or one of the other connected members. You can also leave a request in the Follow-up Forum for Jay's Pinterest WAbinar. Here is the link for the Forum: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/wa_forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=94125
Note: Pinterest has changed the rules. Invitations are no longer necessary

Do you have to cloak the amazon affiliate links when you pin to pinterest?
Reply
JeannineC Premium
Don''t cloak affiliate links on pinterest. Pinterest does not like shortened or cloaked links, so doing that could actually cause the links not to either work or track.

I don't understand cloaking? Imbedding URL?
Reply
MikeLambert Premium
Hi Karen, cloaking is just when you use a text phrase like "click here" for example but behind that click here is actually a link that will direct traffic to where you want it to go, essentially embedding a URL is the same process you can disguise your url as any form of text that you like.
You can use any phrase you wish or any text and make it a link that doesn't look like a link. For example if I wanted you to visit my site but not make it obvious what my site was I would cloak it like "check out this resource for more info" in the background would be my websites URL. Hope that helps Karen have a great day Mike.

Hey Craig Pinterest is now stripping Affiliate links from Pins. We can still use it to drive traffic to websites and e-commerce shops we own but direct affiliate links are getting binned.

I do see some programs that are more obscure getting through but they will probably go in the future so why waste time working on them. Better to build a page with your link on and send the traffic to it.

What is cloaking a link?
Reply
TheHammer Premium
It is when you take an affiliate link and make it look a bit neater, and it is possible to customize it. Pretty link is a plug in that will cloak links for example.

so do I set up a pin it button on every post I have and make?
Reply

you can use socail plugins with pin it available...you shouldn't need to manually place the button
Reply
isn't the plugin only avail with a premium membership?
Reply
towpyn Premium
I'm not actually sure about that to be honest, I should think that plugins would be available but could be wrong.

you can try this https://wordpress.org/plugins/social-sharing-toolkit/

Or

In word press dashboard > plugins > add new > search box type "social sharing toolkit"

If it allows you to get this it's a great tool for your site.

Nice Craig very helpful tutorial :). I have a question though. On the last page where you say.

"If you need to promote the product, pin the image from somewhere that does not include a competing affiliate link."

What do you mean by this and how would you do this. I've in the process on signing up to pintrest so when I'm inside this might make more sense to me. But incase it doesn't could you elaborate please :)

Thanks

Chris

As there are many on Pinterest that are promoting products, you need to look at the images that you use and if it contains a link to the affiliate product you need to use another image.

Look at your affiliate code on the "My Stats" page you will see a=aid and a number. This is the format of an affiliate link. Check to make sure that someone else doesn't have on attached to the picture. If you replace their affiliate link with yours you are essentially stealing their commission.
Ask yourself how you would feel if someone did this to you.

Right okay I see. Thanks Craig I would probably just have went ahead and changed their link not thinking anything of it simply cause I've just started on it.

Cheers again Craig

Hello! I am trying to verify my website for Pinterest using meta tags. I understand that you need to to go Appearance - Editor and paste the code after the word head/header. However, the verification process does not seem to go through. Would anyone know how please? I still don't get it.
Reply
Kyle Premium
You have to FTP the HTML file to your website. You are not going to be able to do this if you are using a free website, but if you are using your own domain you will be able to.

Here is some training on the FTP process:

what you are describing should work. the meta tag route is very simple. that way you don't need to ftp anything. make sure you are pasting the code on the header.php file from the choices in the right sidebar under the editor tab, and make sure you hit the "update file" button at the bottom after you paste in the meta tag - before you complete verification.

How do you verify a website on Pinterist please?

Add this meta tag to the <head> of your index.html file (or equivalent):
<meta name="p:domain_verify" content="pinterest-b9c4e.html" />
2. We were unable to verify your website. Click here to try again or visit support.

Labman Premium
If you have a business account, when you reach the verification stage, pinterest will give you an html file. This needs to be uploaded (via ftp) to your website's root directory.
This is only available for top level domains (.siterubix sites are not a top level domain)
So if your site is http://yoursitename.com you can verify your site.

Here are the instructions at pinterest..https://help.pinterest.com/entries/22217383-Verify-by-HTML-file-upload

Pinterest is being crawled by Google, and if done right, your boards can rank quite easily for low-medium keywords. I have several boards that are ranking on the first and second page of Google (higher than my Wordpress site!) with absolute zero backlinking. All I have is a description of my board and a bunch of "pins" with short descriptions with keywords in them. The pins all point to my websites and Amazon. Pretty decent traffic generator, and I don't have to write much content.
Reply
Labman Premium
I noticed a couple of my pages ranking well after posting on Pinterest too.
Reply
Malablues Premium
The two most important things I've learned to ranking with Pinterest:

1. Choose a long-tail keyword with low-med competition to name your board. The keyword will be in your url (pinterest.com/accountname/long-tail-keyword) and in your title. Good SEO.

2. Pin and repin lots of stuff. It doesn't even have to be related to your topic or keyword, and you will still start to rank.

I think if Pinterest users understood how to name their boards based on keywords, their boards would rank pretty well in Google. As it is most simply name their boards something like favorite places or cute animals.

Hey cheers for that - I've been using pinterest since Jay's Wabinar but stopped after I found my amazon links not being tagged! You mentioned that amazon links have been changed - that is probably why. Any further update on this? Know if Pinterest have officially stopped affiliate links? Either way - great suggestion to use link cloakers, onto that now. Thanks for the post - very helpful.

Great training! I have actually been using it to get more exposure for the craft supplies I have been selling on eBay. Have already had some successful re-pins. I also follow others who re-pin, like, comment on my pin or another pin I had commented on that is not in my list which helps extend my overall reach.

People have already figured out how to scrape Amazon and pin pics with their affiliate links using robots?
Reply
Kyle Premium
Yeah, it was bound to happen. That was the first and most obvious "gaming" angle to the system I saw. There is a lot of products on Amazon with a lot of product pictures and a lot of them are cool pictures that people want to share!
Reply

Also if you do not add your own Amazon affiliate link then I understand the Pinterest team will add their own for any click throughs.

Great training. Pinterest is a great way to obtain reach.

The key is to host images and to pin images (on your site) that people want to share. The more shares you get, the more followers you have, and ultimately the more reach and traffic you will get from your Pinterest account.

Don't forget to add your affiliate links within your Pins (where necessary)!

It is true that Pinterest do replace Amazon Affiliate's links with their own links.
If you simply pin a picture, along with your Amazon Associate linked URL, the only ones likely to make any money are Pinterest themselves. And they are making bucket loads of it, I understand!

WA's My-Linker gets round this nicely.

What worries me though is if Pinterest devise a way to replace Amazon bound My-Linker links with their own links. Anyone know if this is feasible or likely to happen?

Good article. Thanks.

I like the new layout, by the way. Much easier to find exactly what I want on WA.
Well done to all involved in the upgrade.

Dave
