Uploading Custom Files
You can also use FTP to upload custom files, such as an E-book you want to make available to people who subscribe to your newsletter or mailinglist or perhaps you need to add a verification html file for verification of ownership for a certain service.
The verification files usually have to go in the root of your WordPress website, which is underneath httpdocs. As for downloads, you can place them in custom places and directories, as long as they can be accessed by the visitor.
To create directories works the same way as on local, you right click somewhere in the white of the right window and click create directory (or optionally create directory and enter) and give a name to it.
Within the just created directory you can then upload the files and link them within your content, depending on where you placed them.
A directory or a file in the root means:
yoursitename.com/directory/file.ext
A directory or file within the content directory of WordPress (wp-content) which is a more logical place to put stuff, would end up being linked like:
yoursitename.com/wp-content/evtdirectory/evtfilename
Alternatively you can use a plugin to upload and manage file uploads such as ebooks etc.
Thanks for this excellent training. I've been seeing references to FTP but had no idea what it was and how to use it. You detailed instructions will be a great reference tool!
