Thanks for being a student!

I hope you have learned something new or refreshed old knowledge by going through this tutorial on FTP.

You learned:

  • What FTP means and what you can do with it
  • How to download and install FileZilla
  • How to use FileZilla for:
    • backup of your site
    • adding and removing themes
    • adding and removing plugins
    • adding files and directories to your site for custom purposes

If you have additional questions regarding my tutorial or how to do stuff, please feel free to contact me about it either through my profile, my private messages or through commenting this tutorial.

If there is a section unclear to you, I will update the tutorial accordingly to make it even better, upon request.

Hi,

You would have to contact SiteSupport. FTP is limited to users for a reason. After the 30 days period they are visible to any new and old site in your account. The 30 day period is simply for new members, although I do not really understand why.

Steven,
Thanks for this excellent training. I've been seeing references to FTP but had no idea what it was and how to use it. You detailed instructions will be a great reference tool!

Thanks for the tutorial. It is great info. Could you be more specific about the place on the computer to keep backed up material? Do you create a folder in documents? I have Mac.
All the best:)

you could most certainly place a folder or directory within your documents folder.

Mac is a bit different from Windows where I work upon, but all PC's, be it Mac, Windows or Linux come with hard disks and the organisation of files on it.

The documents folder on a Mac is most likely using cloud backup and is therefore an excellent place to store your backup, as it will automatically save to the cloud.

Thanks for this Steven, I hope others find it useful too. It was a good refresher for me. I had been using FileZilla for all of my sites prior to coming to WA but haven't used it in a few months. I still had FileZilla installed, so I just logged in to one of my sites with only a few tweaks (had to clear out some old data).

Very detailed and easy to understand bro, thanks again, peace! :-)

If you don't mind Steven, I'd like to share this again with full credit to you and your profile, etc. I think a lot of people would benefit. Please let me know if that's ok with you. Peace bro. :-)

Hey Bob,

Sharing is caring, right? As far as I am concerned, the idea of the Open Learning Platform is that when one searches for a topic, one might find this tutorial.

Sharing on your own site (with referral link) is entirely okay. Sharing within WA is also perfectly fine. If you help someone out on chat and they ask for FTP help, you can link them this tutorial, for example, or your own if you happen to have one ;)

The reason I create these tutorials is that I find some stuff not available on the search bar. When I finished a tutorial it gives me the possibility to link the tutorial and share them with people on chat or in question forums.

But thanks for asking anyway. Appreciated. So share away!
