Now that we know what FTP is all about, we can start have a look at where you can find the details and how to use FTP.

First of all the big question: are you premium?

If you are not a premium member, you will not have the option to use FTP access. This is one of the many reasons it is worth it to become a premium paying member of this awesome community! You get full access to your sites and you get access to all the tools and courses and the community.

Of course, not being a premium member but having a website hosted elsewhere could still mean you get FTP access on your website and so you can still use this guide partly.

Next question: Do you have your own domain?

If your site ends in .siterubix.com then you cannot use FTP to access your site. You are hosting still one of the many free sites and they are on shared hosting and do not have the option to use FTP access. To get FTP access to your site, you need to host an own domain name.

It is really worth it to go for your own domain when you want everyone to find your website! An easy to recognize and to remember website domain makes people can easily remember the place to visit. Also do own domain names get taken more seriously. It looks pretty and it can help a bit in ranking.

If you got your own domain then you can continue reading below!

Finding Your FTP Details

First of all, let's go there where all your sites are located, at SiteManager:

Now you will see all your sites, your free .siterubix.com sites as well as your hosted domain websites.

In the same box where it shows all the details for your website, there is a button called "details" on which you need to press:

Clicking on details, you will get to see something like the screenshot below. Note that I have removed all the sensitive data from this screenshot (domain name, ftp access details).

So this are the website details for yourdomain.com and it shows you on the right hand side the FTP Username and FTP Password.

This is what you will need to access your website with the FTP software we are going to download and install in the next step.

Next up:

  • Download & Install of FTP Software
  • Accessing your site with FTP

Hi,

You would have to contact SiteSupport. FTP is limited to users for a reason. After the 30 days period they are visible to any new and old site in your account. The 30 day period is simply for new members, although I do not really understand why.

Steven,
Thanks for this excellent training. I've been seeing references to FTP but had no idea what it was and how to use it. You detailed instructions will be a great reference tool!

Thanks for the tutorial. It is great info. Could you be more specific about the place on the computer to keep backed up material? Do you create a folder in documents? I have Mac.
All the best:)

you could most certainly place a folder or directory within your documents folder.

Mac is a bit different from Windows where I work upon, but all PC's, be it Mac, Windows or Linux come with hard disks and the organisation of files on it.

The documents folder on a Mac is most likely using cloud backup and is therefore an excellent place to store your backup, as it will automatically save to the cloud.

Thanks for this Steven, I hope others find it useful too. It was a good refresher for me. I had been using FileZilla for all of my sites prior to coming to WA but haven't used it in a few months. I still had FileZilla installed, so I just logged in to one of my sites with only a few tweaks (had to clear out some old data).

Very detailed and easy to understand bro, thanks again, peace! :-)

If you don't mind Steven, I'd like to share this again with full credit to you and your profile, etc. I think a lot of people would benefit. Please let me know if that's ok with you. Peace bro. :-)

Hey Bob,

Sharing is caring, right? As far as I am concerned, the idea of the Open Learning Platform is that when one searches for a topic, one might find this tutorial.

Sharing on your own site (with referral link) is entirely okay. Sharing within WA is also perfectly fine. If you help someone out on chat and they ask for FTP help, you can link them this tutorial, for example, or your own if you happen to have one ;)

The reason I create these tutorials is that I find some stuff not available on the search bar. When I finished a tutorial it gives me the possibility to link the tutorial and share them with people on chat or in question forums.

But thanks for asking anyway. Appreciated. So share away!
