Now we can finally access your website with FTP. We did the following steps:

  • We checked where we can find the FTP details for your site
  • We downloaded FileZilla
  • We installed FileZilla

Let's run the software and get rolling!

So, I clicked on Finish at the installer and didn't uncheck the last checkbox, so it started my FileZilla up. If your installer was different or for future reference, your FileZilla should be installed on your PC and in some sort of Application menu. In Windows this is Start or that Round button with Windows logo. Not sure about Tablets, might be the apps screen. From there it is All Programs - and then FileZilla - FileZilla.

Mac and Linux have some sort of Apps directory.

At the first time of running this Welcome to FileZilla screen might come up. When there are updates available a similar screen comes up telling you that you can download and install the newest version. All pretty straight forward. Here we just click OK.

Now we can get into the full screen of FileZilla and now it is time to use the earlier FTP access details. If you cannot remember, you can find them in Sitemanager - click on details button of your site.

In the top left you see servername, here you add your domain name. After that comes username. here you fill in the username for your ftp, which starts with ftp_

Finally you add a password, which is generated for you and is to be found in the earlier explained location. The port you can fill in or leave out. 21 is usually the right port. Then you click on connect and FileZilla will make a connection with the FTP server of your website.

Now you will see something like this:

Up top you see the connection and communication with the server.
Below you see on the left side the local directory and on the right hand side the directories available on the server.

Everything you move from the left to the right, will be uploaded to the server. Everything you move from the right to the left, will be downloaded from the server towards your own PC at the directory you chose.

With this we can do all sorts of stuff with the website, such as:

  • taking backups
  • uploading (premium) themes and plugins
  • removing (premium) themes and plugins
  • uploading files, such as ebooks or verification html files for third parties

Next up I will show you how to take a backup

Hi,

You would have to contact SiteSupport. FTP is limited to users for a reason. After the 30 days period they are visible to any new and old site in your account. The 30 day period is simply for new members, although I do not really understand why.

Steven,
Thanks for this excellent training. I've been seeing references to FTP but had no idea what it was and how to use it. You detailed instructions will be a great reference tool!

Thanks for the tutorial. It is great info. Could you be more specific about the place on the computer to keep backed up material? Do you create a folder in documents? I have Mac.
All the best:)

you could most certainly place a folder or directory within your documents folder.

Mac is a bit different from Windows where I work upon, but all PC's, be it Mac, Windows or Linux come with hard disks and the organisation of files on it.

The documents folder on a Mac is most likely using cloud backup and is therefore an excellent place to store your backup, as it will automatically save to the cloud.

Thanks for this Steven, I hope others find it useful too. It was a good refresher for me. I had been using FileZilla for all of my sites prior to coming to WA but haven't used it in a few months. I still had FileZilla installed, so I just logged in to one of my sites with only a few tweaks (had to clear out some old data).

Very detailed and easy to understand bro, thanks again, peace! :-)

If you don't mind Steven, I'd like to share this again with full credit to you and your profile, etc. I think a lot of people would benefit. Please let me know if that's ok with you. Peace bro. :-)

Hey Bob,

Sharing is caring, right? As far as I am concerned, the idea of the Open Learning Platform is that when one searches for a topic, one might find this tutorial.

Sharing on your own site (with referral link) is entirely okay. Sharing within WA is also perfectly fine. If you help someone out on chat and they ask for FTP help, you can link them this tutorial, for example, or your own if you happen to have one ;)

The reason I create these tutorials is that I find some stuff not available on the search bar. When I finished a tutorial it gives me the possibility to link the tutorial and share them with people on chat or in question forums.

But thanks for asking anyway. Appreciated. So share away!
