This section looks a little more complicated than it really is. If I can do this every last one of you can do this.
Don't let Casper scare you away. Remember, Casper is a friendly ghost.
You will now find out where some of these ghosts are hiding in your analytics.
The first task that you want to do is go back to Reporting at the top of your analytics.
Go ahead click on Reporting.
From here you are going to click in this order….
- Audience
- Technology
- Network
You are going to be looking for the hostname.
Now, this one is a bit hidden, but you will find hostname right inside your analytics.
If you can't find it, move your eyes to the middle of the page and look down, you should see hostname right there.
Click on hostname and this is where you will find your site name along with these referrals.
In hostname, you may see a bunch of hostnames that do not pertain to your website like iloveitaly.com
What you want to do is find all the relevant hostnames such as your own website domain name.
What You Will Be Doing
You are going to put some characters in between your website name.
The easiest way I did it is by copying and pasting.
I know it sounds a bit irky, but it works.
I'm going to explain to you in the most simplistic way that I can.
If I confuse you, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below.
Since I brought up Casper, we are going to use casper.com as an example.
In the hostname area you are going to see your own website name along with some other domain names that do not pertain to your website.
To give you an example you will see sites like...
- casper.com
- blog.capser.com
- forums.capser.com
- translate.googleusercontent.com
Some of you may have more domain names listed and others may only have a few.
You may also see other websites that don't pertain to your website like...
- iloveitaly.com
- semalt.com
- buttonsforwebsite.com
- website.xyz
Your goal here is to filter out the sites that do not pertain to your website at all.
The best and easiest way I did this is to open notepad on your computer.
Next what you want to do is focus on this one part of your keyboard... Just focus right there Daniel Son.
Now these characters on your keyboard “|” will be separating your relevant website name and anything that has a “.” in between the website name, this character “\” will go right in front of the “.” (Period).
Example
casper\.com|blog\.casper\.com|forums\.casper\.com|translate\.googleusercontent\.com
If you look at the example above, it looks a little complicated, but it's not.
All you have to do is copy on your notepad your domain name
Example Domain Name
casper.com
Then place the "\" (slash) right in front of the the "." (period) and that "|" (line) right at the end of the domain names without any spaces.
Casper\.com|
Then copy and paste the next relevant domain name and do the same thing.
Continue on until you placed all the relevant domain names that pertain to your website on your notepad (we will get to that notepad later).
Leave out all the hostnames that do not pertain to your website such as semalt.
As for sites like, "translate.googleusercontent.com" that is google translate.
When you see translate.googleusercontent.com, those are people who came to your website that speak a different language.
You will want to add sites like "translate.googleusercontent.com" to your notepad.
If you're unsure about a website, you can Google that website name and find out more info about the domain name.
Once you finish placing all those websites on your notepad, congrats because you just got the most complicated part out of the way.
Now it's just smooth sailing from here.
You must apply a couple of filters in order to prevent this fake traffic. This step by step guide should help you.
