Track Your Link Statistics

As you will have seen on the previous pages, when you shorten your links, or when you're logged into Bitly, you'll be presented with some basic stats such as 'Total Clicks', the time of the day those clicks were made, their referrer site and each user's basic location in the world - usually to town or city level.

But now... the bit you've all been waiting for...

So now for the handy little trick I promised you all at the start of the tutorial.

These statistics are also available by copying your shortened URL to your browser's address bar and simply adding a "+" to the end of it. Hit return and low and behold, there are your link's statistics.

OK... no big deal I hear you say. But here's the real gem in this handy little-known tip. You can use this "URL+" trick on any link, be they yours or anyone else's, and access that link's stats. So, for example, add the "+" to your competitors' Bitly links and see how their links are performing. Find out if they are engaging their visitors, when and where they are engaging them - which websites and what geographical locations. Are they even engaging their audience at all?

Armed with even this limited amount of information, you'll be able to tap into their marketing strategies and use them to your own ends.

So go and purge some of your competitors' link tactics and find out what strategies and tactics you're activities are missing out on.

Thanks for this information, Sean. I've used Bitly in the past, but didn't realize you could do the other things, such has editing the link. Great info.

All the best,
Sue

Thank you. I have heard about Bitly and Google URL shortener, I always use Pretty Link for this matter.

No worries Loes. Pretty Link is great as a link management plugin for your Wordpress site, though from memory doesn't offer stats. Furthermore, it doesn't give you access to your competitors' stats - which is good and bad as works both ways I guess :-)

It does give you the amount of clicks

I agree, but the number of clicks is a bit limited and doesn't really tell us a whole heap. That's why I like these Bitly stats. They're not extensive, but there are some useful nuggets of information in there - like referral path. I find that really handy as it allows to find where my competitors links are and, where appropriate, add my own.
