In this training video I am going to walk you through the process of initially setting up your website. I cover some of the main aspects of getting your website ready for content and ready to get indexed within the search engines (like Google).

Here are some of the topics that are going to be covered:

(1) How to access your Wordpress admin area
(2) Understanding the different sections of Wordpress
(3) What plugins are and the benefits of them
(4) Activating your Wordpress plugins
(5) Removing the "default" dummy content installed with Wordpress
(6) Removing the "Just Another Wordpress Website" text from your site

If you have any questions about anything within this video, please leave your comments below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

I am learning so much right now I never known that website was so easy to create but I guess that's what happen when you are apart of w a community thank you for that training

Yes, these days, building a website is easy, but building it out is not as easy. :)

You won't be able to fully build your website with a phone because of the functionality it will lack on mobile, you will need a desktop computer or laptop.

Cellphones are expensive. You can buy a Chromebook (laptop) for as little as $150 (maybe less) at Amazon dot com or BestBuy dot com .

Completed a high-level overview walkthru of WordPress Admin back office re dashboard elements such as log-in, update, plugins, posts, media, comments, appearance, user, and tools. Settings... removal of tagline content. Deletion of default dummy content template(s) e.g. posts/pages removed via trash button. Saved changes were completed with notification of "NOTHING FOUND" message, yielding a blank canvas in a nutshell. Learn... play/explore features of the dashboard eventually a deep-dive of the sectional components will be imperative. Thanks! Great Intro...! Clg

Hi Kyle. I have a question that I hope I didn't miss the answer somewhere! I registered my domain, chose a theme and now I'm right where I should be after watching your video. However, I am wondering if my undone site is "live" as I have .com on mine and not the rebix. How do I know? I've only had one other website a long time ago and I remember that when I was working on it or it wasn't complete, the site said something like "under construction"....but that was a long time ago.
Thank you Kyle. I really liked the video and plan on playing around with it today!

To see if it's live type in your site domain in the address bar. It should bring up what you have so far and that means it's live. If nothing comes up then you made a mistake somewhere.

Just so YOU are possitively sure, when you get 2 or more answers that are opposite of each other to your question, you can always go back to your training videos again and rewatch. It's a lot to take in the first time, so you may want to rewatch a few times. Or, if still in doubt, ask one of the founders of WA. Not to say no one else knows what they are talking about, because I am not saying that at all.
It's just that getting 2 or more different answers to a question can still be very confusing, so it's just best to ask an expert when in doubt.

Hello,
I'm just on lesson 5 and picked my theme however I have 2 questions:

1) I have an alert that is asking me to "Allow EWWW Image Optimizer to track plugin usage?..."
Should I allow this?

2) I have an alert recommending a plugin:
"This theme recommends the following plugin: Kirki."
Should I install this?

The theme I chose is Skin.

Tank you,
Scott
Reply
Labman Premium
I don't allow EWWW optimizer to track my usage. It increases the bandwidth used by your site and is unnecessary.

I choose themes with no additional plugins required. I'm not familiar with Kirki so I can't offer an opinion there but, I would choose another theme.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yes allow EWWW Image Optimizer - this is the plugin that WA recommends for sites hosted here.

As for the other plugin, I would not, this plugin is like the Jet Pack plugin which is a very heavy loaded plugin that slows down your site big time and causes other issues, in fact jet pack is so bad WA blocks it being installed.

I am using the "storefront" theme and there are many things in this theme not discussed. When should I run the setup wizard, and them that asks a bunch of questions as well. Is there a video with the set up of the storefront theme template? Not sure if its the best theme to use for my "sockaliciousfeet" website
Reply

It never hurts to ask here, but with thousands of different themes available, you'll most likely have more luck going to the site of the theme itself or it's developer. Sometimes there will be references to the documentation or other info if you look at the theme details in the appearance section of your site's admin area.

I went with the 'Poster" theme. Not easy to figure out! I should have checked out more demos before picking. It is coming along but even placing my picture in the right spot on a post or page is trial and error. I have wasted a lot of time learning this theme. But the next theme I pick will be smoother to work with.

@MichaelReim2 I looked at the "detail" section and saw that it was highly used and did look at the demo but somehow the header specs given to add a pic seems to get everything all in a mess in overlapping :( I am currently wasting a lot of time as well in moving forward and getting my site out there as I need to get some rich content on there before I can be considered for an affiliate network approval :(

Hi guys, I signed up about 3 weeks ago and boy am I sorry I never put full effort into my signup - chaotic at the time, and that's an understatement!!! - because I realized something just last night. I found the tutorials easy to grasp...but never made notes. I managed to get to lesson 7 during my free trial period. Last night though I started over and not only started writing things down - for future reference - I also opened 3 windows of the same site! 1st was for the tutorials, 2nd for the practical and 3rd to do whatever else I needed to do - like respond to messages. In this way time is not wasted and you do not get frustrated. This comment is for the newbies!!!

Kyle thnx the video on setting up your websites - initial steps and I have been listening to it more than 3 times now and very interesting indeed. A question about the number of of more than one admin and users and authors you can have in your website do you mean that some can be from outside beside yourself and does it mean you as owner can adopt more than one names as user, admin and author.
In fact the great interest I have in your training I have competed going through Course 1 with 10 lessons and I intend to go through Course 1 with its 10 lessons many times over till I know that I have mastered all I have to know about Course 1 and its 10 lessons. I have many social media visits to my google account with paid social media jobs with comments "I have spent so much on my profit money making machine and I hope I will not be asking too much for a small price of $97 for you to pay in order to join". I some I have money to join them and once I am inside I got lost because there no back-up support to address my complaints and so far I have not earned from them and there with no website they made rely on my twitter, google and lLinkedin accounts to promote products I have to promote for them. With WA it is a privilege to join you via your Starter Free Membership with 2 Free Websites and can allow with meagre income source to grow up from within your WA Network and so GENEROUS of you to do this. After initially creating my website, I noticed there is an option at the bottom to delete this website. Does anyone know, if I were to delete it due to changing my mind about the direction I want to go for a niche, would I still get 2 free sites, or does that first one just go away?

If you delete this one, ma'am, you have again 2 free sites to build. You can create and delete as many times as you like. But you cannot create more than 2. :)

Maybe I'm the dummy here. . . . it's all Greek to me! Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm still confused that I supposedly created a website, and the Theme I chose is nowhere to be found, it looks like a nothing page and I have no idea how to design a webpage or what are the desirable things a website should incorporate. I was also under the impression that my webpage should be a landing page guiding a visitor to leave me their email and triggering the autoresponder to send them their freebie article or video which in turn offers them an affiliate offering. Am I totally mixed up?
Reply
SteveCrozza Premium
Initially, it is confusing but when you get your head around it you begin to realise that the tools are there and all you have to do is use them and write and write and write.

All those things you mentioned above are the tools, you need to create them. The theme is basically the structure around the website. It allows you to create pages and posts and setup landing pages, etc

If you follow the lessons and do what each lesson covers it will come together, just don't jump ahead, that is when it is confusing.

Good luck.

Okay, so, what if, in the future, i want to change the domain name?
For instance, right now, theperfectstroller.siterubix.com! What if, down the road, this turns into something awesome and I want to change my domain name?! Originally, i picked arrhpillars.com for a variety of reasons, or raysmom.com! Ultimately, i want a parenting blog with affiliate marketing! I picked what I have because I like to go hiking and I literally researched to find the PERFECT stroller! Would this be something I just incorporate into my main site? I have so many questions! How would that work?

changing the name of a free .siterubix.com site is easy, they are set up for that transfer to an own domain name any time you like

as for own domain names they cannot be changed, so wait till you know which one you want - or you can just decide not to renew a name you didn't like and buy another
Reply
judLie Premium
with a siterubix site when you are ready to buy your own domain, assuming that it's available, you can get WA to transfer your website with all of its contents to your own domain. Everything will be done for you.
To do that, you would go to:
Site Rubix then click on Site Manager and for your Site Rubix website there's a Move button which when you click on will bring up a box that gives you the option of moving your siterubix.com to either a New Domain or to an Existing Domain. Whichever option you choose, the WA Support team will make the transfer for you and take care of all the behind-the-scenes work.

This is covered in the Certification course, I think in Course 2, in either Lesson 1 or 2.

Hope that helps.

I know there are places that offer websites that offer royalty free photos that you can use, but most of them have watermark logos across them. Do you have any recommendations of good places to go where we can find good images to use for our websites?

This is nice! I mean, after the initial excitement rush, I kind of got stuck just before this lesson and video. I was trying to build my website and with no experience of Wordpress, or that matter, any other platform, I couldn't move ahead. And as I had made it a point to go one step at a time, I did not jump to this lesson. I thought I was supposed to be able to build the site with the previous lesson itself :) It was my friend, another WAer, phakacha8 who came to my rescue and told me to explore all the features in SiteRubix. But looking back, the fact that I got stuck was good for me because I started looking into the features of SiteRubix on my own. Even though only about 1% of my site is complete, it is up now! It was only after watching this video that I came to know how to delete the "Hello World" post :)

Oh ... it SiteRubix ... as in the FREE site?

Lucky you!

I've paid for a misspelled domain name and had to purchase another with the proper spelling once. My bad!

If you have not added anything to your free site, then you can simply delete it and create a new, properly named site.

However, if you've got your site setup with content, then you may want to create a backup of the site you have now: Then, create a new and properly spelled website, and then install the backup by using the backup URL of the site you want to get rid of. Once the new, properly spelled domain has all of your content in place ... then and only then, delete the misspelled website.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Lisa,

I wouldn't recommend for you to go into a niche that you know absolutely nothing about.

Why?

Because if you don't know anything about it then how are you going to write about it?

It's so much better to go with a topic that you're passionate about or a hobby of yours.

This way you'll enjoy what you're doing and this won't seem like work.
Also, there's a good chance that you may have some fun at the same time.

What's there not to love about that?

The whole idea behind building a website is so that you can share this passion with the entire world and connect with like minded people who also share this passion.

You would then be answering their questions and providing them with a solution to their problems.

You would also be sharing some of your personal experience that you've had within this niche with your audience to try and get other people to relate to you.

You don't need to have any massive knowledge about any niche as you can always research as you go.

However, if you don't find this topic interesting or it bores you to death chances are that you won't stick with it long.

What are some of your hobbies, Lisa? What do you like to do for fun?

Once I hear back from you, I'll be able to help you narrow your niche down so that you can find your targeted audience.

I really hope this helps you out and please let me know if you have any other questions or need my help.

Okay, thank you Scott. I really don't have any hobbies anymore.
I do love skin care & make up. Clothing and fashion.
I don't know why I chose that one. I felt like I could learn about drones myself as I go along. It sounded interesting to me. Don't know where that came from.

You are most welcome Lisa!!

If you don't really have any hobbies, that's cool. Perhaps you could go with one of the things you mentioned above.

Drones would be a great niche as well and I'm not trying to discourage you from going with this, I just want you to feel comfortable with what you're doing.

If this is something that interests you and you would like to learn more about it then you could go with this.

You would just need to do a lot of research on it.

Whatever one you decide upon, let me know and I'll help you narrow this down and answer any additional questions you may have.

I hope you're having a fabulous weekend Lisa and I'll look forward to your reply.

Hi Lisa,

I would love to break this down for you and demonstrate how to categorize your ideas and put them into categories.

I'm going to go with a particular hobby of mine and show you how I was able to narrow down a really competitive niche and build a profitable website using the WA training.

I decided to go with video games as my niche and I narrowed this down to gaming headsets.

I then narrowed this down even more and focused on specific types of headsets and wrote product reviews on the best headsets out there that will give you the most bang for your buck.

I have even gone as far as categorizing these under different brand names and I have reviewed many of these on my website.

The 3 categories I created on my site were

Gaming headsets
Specific types of headsets
Headsets by brand name

This would work the same way for any niche and I hope this has helped you out and cleared up any confusion that you may have.

If you have any other questions or need my help please let me know.

The Setting Up Your Website...Initial Steps video is a wonderful intro that guides you through the start of building an online presence in Wordpress. I may be jumping the gun because I haven't viewed any other content yet in Lesson 5, but thus far, I would have liked to see a quick walk-thru posting content into a post, and a page, and how to add/manipulate images.

It would also be a great idea if the infamous "Click Here" letter i in a circle was visible in the building platform, that would open a pop-up window to explain an item that you're currently trying to work with. This might cut down on support inquiries, and may individual development time more efficient. Again, I may be ahead of myself because I have NOT viewed any other content in this lesson.

Overall...I think this is a great start.

1. If I decide to change or activate a new theme within my site, will doing that change, delete my content or designing ex color, pictures, that I already have on my website?

2. When I visit my site it says "Oh no! Article not found! 404 error!" is that normal.

3. I did some re designing on my website, like added colors and pictures to my main page but I wasn't able to save it without publishing. Is there a way to do that or would I need to start over again each time or just do it when i'm ready to publish it.

Thank you.

1. you can change themes anytime but not sure if colors etc will remain. Content should stay the same though. That's why I always note down all the colors I use somewhere saved for this reason. Content, images should be the same.

2. this is because you have no blog posts, that should be the reason why you have that error.

3. Adding colors is in your theme settings and that should be saved separately to any page or images you add. You can only add images to pages or posts. Unless it's published, you can't see them. If it's a page, you need to set your home page to that page after it's been published to be able to see it on the home page. You set this at Settings, Reading, Select under Front Page Display "A static Page" then select the page you published there.

Finally! I been paying for program, after program, only to end up in the same place.... LOST! I am barely past the half way point of the first course, and all these words I been hearing, "traffic, blogs, affiliates, etc." are looking more and more like tools, instead of puzzle pieces. Who would have thought that the person that would make the most sense out of all this marketing jargon, hasn't asked me for a thing. I think I will listen to the guy that is making money giving away free handouts.... Outstanding Kyle!

Since I have never been able to build a website before (10 years ago) was to complicated I will have to review this several times to get the full jest of it. Although it looks pretty straight forward. It's just getting use to the program like anything new you have to learn it and become familiar with the program.
Reply
I will have to watch this a few times to make sure I am doing everything correctly. In these kinda of subjects I am a bit slower to learn. But I won't give up. Sadly yesterday I was not able to do anything with the crazy weather... power went off for a little while... and there was a storm passing thru with Tornado warnings. I am terrified of those. So I was just with baby, dog and bag ready to go to safety if it was necessary. Thankfully, it was not and nothing happen and we were all ok. But here I am... back to get into this. I really, really need this!...

Question tho.. Can I post a blog, while I am still working on setting up, fixing up, editing etc, the website? (I hope my question makes sense and thank you in advance!

Hi everyone,
I'm back from 8 days of Passover and plunged into Kyle's website training. I am reading the comments, and it seems most people had to read more than once. I feel better because I read it once and nothing registered. Sorry guys, I do have some dense moments. I will check in again after subsequent re-reads. Thanks for the comments.

I watched the complete video first and then watched it a second time with my website's back end open on a 2nd tab. The second time I followed the instructions as Kyle went through them by pausing the video and complete the tasks 1 by 1.

I found this method to be great for all training videos.

The first time you can only concentrate on the information and the second time it will make more sense and you catch up on small things you might have missed the first time around. This is where it also makes it easier to complete the practical side of things.

Thanks for a great video Kyle :)

Hey Kyle, thanks for the video I just watched, It is very helpful. Now that I have watched it and took some notes, I plan on running the video in one tab and in a separate tab I will be editing my website as the video is giving me the information just in case I may need it as I am editing.
Do you think that is a good idea?

Come to find out it was so easy to do the tasks assigned when editing my website that I didn't even have to look at the slim notes I had taken.

However, I did open up a new tab and had the video ready to play alongside but that was not necessary for this particular lesson video.

I can imagine that playing the video/referring to it in videos in another lesson may indeed be of some assistance.

Ty for making me feel more confident fiddling with the themes! It was also helpful to explain Posts & Pages as I had forgotten pages made basically tabs.

Can you not blog on different pages for example a site about green living and you have a page for the kitchen area and another for the garden or something?

Btw, even tho I find these vids EXTREMELY helpful I find they are blurry. Not so much that I can't read it but, distinctly so.

So I just put together a website and been working at it for a few hours. I know it takes time and any suggestions would be appreciated.

I feel like there's something missing. I guess with a premium upgrade, you can do more like format where I can put the meditations in a small icon boxes so that they can choose instead of having to scroll down. anyway. love to hear from you guys. thanks

Hey everyone, Congratulations on getting this far through the traing, keep it going...Fulfilled dreams lie ahead :D

QUESTION...one of the tasks after watching the video says...

"Activate your All in One SEO, Exclude Pages, & Akismet plugins"

I hadn't activated akismet and assumed I had missed it in the video and so I DID activate it, BUT after reviewing the video a second time it sounds as though there is a superior plugin

Do I deactivate akismet?
Is the other plugin a part of SSL and therefore doesn't need any action on my part?

Sorry about what may be very basic questions, but this is where I'm starting from lol :D
Reply
GlenPalo Premium
You can go ahead and deactivate Akismet if you are hosting your website here on WA. WA now does the spam blocking on the server so Akismet is not needed.

The Exclude Pages plugin is probably not needed unless you are using an old wordpress theme that automatically added pages to your menu.

Hey all,
So I pointed my domain from WordPress over to WA severs--all seems well, but when I press "login," it doesn't log me in, just brings me to a non-existent page of my website saying something like, "Oops! That page can't be found. Try a search instead."
Anyone know what's causing it? I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of all of this.
Thanks!

On what page are you pressing "login"?

Have you used the SiteRubix SiteBuilder page to add your domain to your WA hosting? (Your domain name should appear in the list when you open the SiteRubix SiteManager page.)
Reply
AlexisW Premium
Hi Bob,
Yes, when I click the SiteManager page, it pulls up my domain and all the info, like "1 page" "1 post" "1 approved comment" etc. This is where I click the blue "login" button, but not getting logged in--just brought to a "doesn't exist" sort of page on my blog. Weird! I must have some setting or something that I can't figure out.
Reply
BobBarr Premium
When you click on the "Log In" button on the left (see #1 below), are you seeing the login details and the "Login Now" to the right (see #2 below)?
Reply
AlexisW Premium
Yes, exactly what I see on my end. Both buttons have same result.
Reply
BobBarr Premium
Logging in is a 2-step process. The two buttons don't serve the same purpose.

You need to first click on the "Log In" button on the left to open the details and "Login Now" button pane.

After doing that, clicking the "Login Now" button on the right should log you in to your wordpress dashboard. (You shouldn't hit the "Log In" button on the left a second time.)

If that's not happening for you, I'd suggest opening a support ticket to have the tech support folks look into the problem.
Reply
AlexisW Premium
Ah I do see what you mean, I didn't realize they were different! Unfortunately, yes, just brings me to that same weird page rather than the dashboard. I'll go ahead and open a support ticket. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!!
All the best!

That certainly is a strange problem. If simply logging in doesn't work correctly, there's really nothing we can do as users to fix it

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on what I am going to post on my site. My site relates to my hobby of making paper sculptures. This is my idea of what to post:

Hello!

My name is Fairuz, and I have recently gotten into paper sculpting and I want to share what I learn, and what I personally do, with anyone else who may be interested. I will most likely post a few of my beginning sculptures sometime soon to give examples, though they are a beginners' work. I will be writing about items I like to use with my sculptures like the process that I use to get my paper to a mulch texture, as well as any paint or glue I use. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.

I may post sculptures I come across, and I'll be sure to point out when it isn't mine and I will give credit when I can.

I seem to be having the worst time with setting up the website. Maybe I am just overthinking it all. As far as the themes..Are there certain ones that are more user-friendly than others? I am apparently technologically illiterate. I am so confused by some of the terms used. I feel like I should have a degree in computer sciences or something! Anyone else feel this way? and if so what did you do to get past this?

Hey Jimmie,

Trust me when I say: YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

I felt like I should have invested in a few of those How to for Dummies series, lol. I'm very comfortable on the computer, and can figure some things out on my own, but this......this is a whole new world for me.

I made through Course 2, but I'm going to use this week to review those lessons that gave me me some challenges. Remember, there's no time frame, you can go as slow or as fast as you want. The goal is to not just through it, but to be able to retain the information, so you can build something that will generate traffic and lots of revenue!

You're in the right place at the right time Jimmie......own that fact, and move forward with confidence!

Certain themes will work better with certain subjects or purposes you have for your site. You don't need a degree but if you are confused by certain terms someone here can probably help you understand. The live chat is nice for really quick answers too so you don't stay stuck. Just follow the step by step and its like learning anything foreign, you get it after a while but not necessarily right away.

Think of riding a bike without training wheels. Its hard to keep it steady and you fall off a whole lot but in time you get it. This is the same way. No worries, you're not alone but don't give up and keep trying and don't be afraid to ask for help. Ask a million questions if you have to and ur not alone there either because I ask a lot of questions when I don't know something also :)

I just need a bit more clarity please.

U need to find a doddering 85 year old who is technophobic and if they enjoy it I'll give U the Steve Jobs gold star. put up some street signs and when U say clik on X say how to find X even if U think its in front of their nose. If u think "anyone who is that retarded shouldnt be doing this then U R a mediocre teacher. Obviouslly, U R not mediocre, right Kyle?
and why dont u have some kind of suggestion box. ? thats like a glaring omission. Youll thank me later.

There are ways you can change the order of your blog roll if you want. I did it for one of my websites because it seemed to make more sense to me. I wanted people to be able to find my posts easier. So, here is what you do:

In your Dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New in the search box, enter "Posts in Page" and install and activate this plugin.

With this plugin using simple shortcodes you can change the order of your posts.
