Many webmasters spend so much agonizing time trying to come up with the perfect keywords that will yield their content with high Google rankings. But have you ever had those days when you cannot come up with a good enough keyword? What do you do when that happens?

This is what I do. I just write my content without a target keyword. That is right, I do not waste my time trying to come up with a target keyword if I cannot, because I know that all of my content will get indexed and be ranked for the natural keywords it contains.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

No I am not kidding. Matter of fact Kyle says in his Boot Camp video on keywords in Lesson 3, Phase 2 that keywords “are not the be all and end all of your website and content development.” He also goes on to say, “not every single page on your site is going to need to target a keyword.”

I do not know about you but just knowing that I do not always have to target a keyword in order to publish a page or post of content is a big relief. Now when those times arise, when I cannot come up with a target keyword, I just write my content without one.

So in answering the question, are target keywords needed to get rankings? The answer is NO. Obviously your content will get better rankings with a target keyword, but if you have a mental block and cannot come up with one, write and publish your content anyways.

The important thing for your website is to publish content, for it is the content that will increase traffic and convert sales, not your keywords. Being that people searching online can still find your content in search results without typing in your keyword, just proves that all of your content is indexed and ranked for the natural keywords they contain.

Hi Robert,
I've removed all instances of keywords in the SEO keywords meta tag field for pages and posts on my site. Will doing so automatically update the XML sitemap and/or will Google re-index my pages next time the bot visits? Or is it a good idea to manually do a fetch as Google in Webmaster tools for my home page and all pages linked to it?
Thanks
Neil

No, everything will be fine next time Googlebot comes back to recrawl your website and update the sitemap.

But if you want you could do a Fetch of your home page and all related links.

Can you take the keywords out of the Meta tag after they have been published?

For Pages, yes you can.

BUT

For Posts you need to be careful. The more recent versions of WordPress and/or the All-in-One SEO are placing your blog post tags in the keyword Meta tag too.

So if you remove your keywords from your Post Meta tags, make sure you do not remove the blog post tags too.
