So often I see many members either asking or assuming that they should be placing their keywords in the keyword Meta tag at the bottom of their WordPress editor. However this again is outdated information just like keyword density.

There was a time when all of the search engines used the keyword Meta tag to determine what your content was about but now can easily do so without the keyword Meta tag. As long as your keyword appears in the areas discussed earlier, the search engines will know what your content is about.

DO NOT USE KEYWORD META TAG

Google says not to pay any attention to the keyword Meta tag. Matt Cutts says that no search engine uses the information from there because that is another way people keyword stuff their content. When people put keywords in the keyword Meta tag, Google sees it as you trying to game the ranking algorithm.

The image above is one of my Google Page 1 posts listed in my WordPress Editor. Notice it says No Title under SEO Title, No Description under SEO Description, and No Keywords under SEO Keywords. This means that I did not fill in the Title, Description, and Keyword Meta tags, but yet I was still able to rank on Google Page 1.

This is just another way to prove that you do not have to use the keyword Meta tag under your WordPress editor to get high rankings. You could ultimately harm your rankings if you do it enough. Remember, Google and the search engines know that people who routinely put keywords in the Meta tag, are looked at suspiciously as people trying to game the ranking algorithm.

So the only Meta tags you can add content to are your Title Meta tag, should you need to add your keyword in that way and your Description Meta tag, should you not like the description the All-in-One SEO has automatically generated for you from the first 155 characters of your content.

Hi Robert,
I've removed all instances of keywords in the SEO keywords meta tag field for pages and posts on my site. Will doing so automatically update the XML sitemap and/or will Google re-index my pages next time the bot visits? Or is it a good idea to manually do a fetch as Google in Webmaster tools for my home page and all pages linked to it?
Thanks
Neil

No, everything will be fine next time Googlebot comes back to recrawl your website and update the sitemap.

But if you want you could do a Fetch of your home page and all related links.

Can you take the keywords out of the Meta tag after they have been published?

For Pages, yes you can.

BUT

For Posts you need to be careful. The more recent versions of WordPress and/or the All-in-One SEO are placing your blog post tags in the keyword Meta tag too.

So if you remove your keywords from your Post Meta tags, make sure you do not remove the blog post tags too.
