Possibilities for Creating Domain Names

Let's now put it all together and create domain names. If your website is in the kitchen niche, you will cover kitchen designs, recipes, and kitchen gear.

Your branding is the most important thing. Let's get that in the forefront. Your name should be memorable and catchy. It should also be easy to pronounce. "BestKitchenRecipeEver" isn't a good option.

You can use a little formula to create domain names. One word should reflect the keyword. In this instance, the word "kitchen", is sufficient. Then, I like to add modifiers around my keyword. These two to three words together create branding.

These are just a few examples:

  • AmazingKitchen.com
  • TheKitchen.com
  • KitchenLovely.com
  • KitchenFromParadise.com
  • KitchenMadeGreat.com, etc.

This combination of "keyword + modifiers" creates branding. I recommend this method from brainstorming domain names.

Some websites have great results even with simple misspellings. TheKitchn.com, a huge website about the kitchen, is a great example. This website is a bit difficult to manage and can lead to strange domain names. It is not something I recommend.

What to Ignore When Choosing a Website’s Domain Name

You now know the basics of choosing a domain name. Let me also show you what you shouldn’t do.

Here are some things to avoid when choosing a domain name:

  • Long phrases that exceed 3 words.
  • Dashes ( - ), if possible.
  • Misspellings...duh! Everybody knows that.
  • Numbers (3Technology.com or ThreeGorilla.com...sounds the same!)
  • Two words – one ending with a letter that begins the other (Perfecttechnology.com and Advanceddrives.com, for example, have two letters in a row that match).
  • Trademark words and Phrases. If you purchase DisneyTechnology.com, Disney can and will take down your website.

Next, what are your core products?

Appreciate the informative post, Lily. I'm glad that you mentioned that '.com' isn't always necessary. I've purchased a couple of domains and had to settle for '.net' extensions in both cases.

That's the only way to learn Stephen.
Keep in mind that you can start several websites here and this makes it possible to get started and then change directions when you learn more.

Beware of 'paralysis by analysis' it can sneak up on you and suddenly you are no further forward 6 months later.

You are looking for a niche that you can feel passionate about writing 3 articles a week for 12 months at least (or get a copywriter to write) and that will have good opportunities to sell products that you like. Either through Amazon or other affiliate links.

Hope this helps.
