Creating Your Goals

Start with you long term goals and work backwards to your short term goals. This will allow you to aim high for the long run, but still have steps that you can achieve along the way.

Prioritize

As you begin to create your goals you will also want to prioritize them in order of importance. For example, put your learning goals ahead of your income goals because without the knowledge you won't be able to earn.

Make Sure Your Goals Are Aligned

Simply put, you cannot have to goals that conflict with each other. If they conflict, you will end up in a tug of war against yourself and end up falling face first in the mud! Goals should be just like puzzle pieces that all work together to provide a bigger picture.

Start With Writing Your Goals Down

As you create your goals, do not under estimate the power of writing them down. In today's digital world it is all too easy to just type them up, but that does not have the power of writing them down. Once you have your goals written down, then it is OK to go ahead and type them up.

Keep Your Goals Visible

Once you have your hard copy of goals written out, it is extremely important that they be visible to you on a daily basis. You can do this in many different ways, such as putting a copy beside your bathroom mirror, so you can see them clearly every day while you are getting ready. Set your goals on your computer as your desktop or screensaver images. Do whatever works for you to make sure that you will see them every day.

I also recommend that you carry your goals with you on a piece of paper. This way anytime you need a bit of inspiration you can pull it out for a read. This will also help if you have an inspiration and need a place to make note of it on the go.

Lastly, make several copies of your goals and keep them at the various places you frequent such as work or school.

Now That Your Goals Are Set

Now that we have set up your goals, let's move on to having a plan to help us achieve them...

Excellent post James! You put a lot of hard work into this and it shows.

I'm a big fan of the S.M.A.R.T. method as well when it comes to setting goals and sticking to them. And I like that you included the need to write your goals down, keep them visible, and track them as you complete them. It was also great that you shared your weekly progress report too - especially the version with your hand-written notes. It shows you've been busy. :-)

All the best and keep up the great work!
