I have been email marketing for a long time, well before the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.
As I wrote in my blog post, https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/glenpalo/blog/email-marketing-confessions-of-an-old-time-spammer, I sent massive amounts of Unsolicited Commercial Email (otherwise known as spam). The law did not prevent the sending of spam. It just added some rules on how to send UCE.
The biggest change the law brought around was an acceleration in the changing marketing mindset.
Internet marketing pioneer, Seth Godin, wrote "Permission Marketing" in 1999. The basis of permission marketing is the privilege of delivering anticipated, personal and relevant messages to people who actually want to get them.
Marketers went from thinking if we send enough email out, someone will buy our product to thinking how to "turn strangers in friends, and friends into customers."
It is simple. Back then, email marketing worked. And it still does. Just the methods have changed.
While double opt-in email marketing was available in the 1990s, it was not widely used. Now double opt-in email marketing is a best practice.
