The Do's and Guide for Reddit
Reddit is a simple (and not so pretty) website. When you first login dont be expecting high tech whiz bang wizardry...expect a super simple looking platform. But again...don't be fooled...theres a lot happening behind the scenes!
To use Reddit you'll be joining and posting to SubReddits. Each subreddit is a unique community of people with shared interests. These subreddits are communities in every sense of the word....they have their own rules. Each subreddit has guidance about what can be posted, how and sometimes guidelines you need to adhere to. Always read these! Most importantly when you post (known as starting a thread) you can either post a link (to your blog post) or a text post (text posts cant link to your site...but can generate traffic to your Reddit user area).
You'll create a profile and username...similar to other social media platforms. What's different with reddit is you are scored....known as Karma. Your Karma indicates the quality of the content you share. Each of your posts and your engagement (comments, replies to comments etc) can be up-voted by other members (gaining you positive Karma) or down-voted (decreasing your Karma)
Basically the higher your Karma the more "trusted" you are in the Reddit community (versus a brand spamming machine)
Reddit DontsWhile Reddit might sound confusing and rule dominated its worth the effort...just keep thinking...traffic, traffic, traffic...
This is important - the moderators and subreddit editors are watching and they see everything....seriously!
- DONT just submit links to your blog. You'll be seen as a spammer and could be blocked. Share 1 of your posts a day (max) to begin with. DO share other peoples posts (share other WA members posts and then they can share yours...pay it forward people!). Get clever...share and share alike.....
- DONT share your post on multiple subreddits...find the most appropriate community and share it once. Multiple shares of the same post is spam...and Reddit hates spam and self promotion. Its about community and engaging with others.
- DONT post links or ask for upvotes in your text posts or within comments sections...you'll be seen.
Reddit is about sharing and engaging. Comment on others posts. Share other peoples work. Karma baby. Pay it forward. Your subreddit communities will reward you. People share loads on Reddit.
I guess it's a similar(ish) concept to the WA pay it forward concept. People use Reddit to market their business...but they are aware they need to share a lot of other peoples content and make engaging comments on others shares if they are going to have success and be allowed to share their own links...this means you will get a lot of great shares within the reddit community and be able to share your work also.
