Healthy Aging: 7 Useful Tips
Statistics show that nowadays more and more people reach an age of 100 or older. This means that it is important to ask ourselves the following question: what can we do to prevent health problems as we get older? In other words, how can we age healthy?
There are several factors that can contribute to this goal: our genes, our habits and our social environment.
Healthy aging: Seven useful tipsNowadays we live much longer than our ancestors. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), our life expectancy is only increasing. This is due to our personal habits, living conditions and medical and pharmacological progress.
The importance of genetics
Having good genes is a decisive factor when it comes to disease resistance. A family history of disease therefore plays a major role in this case.
If your family does not have a history of hereditary diseases and your ancestors generally lived long and healthy, your genetics will probably be on your side.
Good genes increase the chance of a longer life, better bone structure, smoother skin and better control of our emotions. This emotional control can influence our behavior in a positive way.
Not everyone is getting old at the same pace
Our biological age does not always match our chronological age. For example, if you go to a school reunion, you will see that some people, although in principle the same age, are much older or younger than others. Sometimes the time is friendlier for some than for others.
Growing old is a personal experience that is influenced by both external and internal factors. These factors determine our way of life and also how gracefully we grow old.
The result of these factors is often visible in our external appearance, but can also be noticeable to our emotional state of mind.
Healthy food and other nutritional needs
A healthy and balanced diet is important throughout our lives, but especially as we age. Unless you have been told by your doctor that you do not like certain foods, we therefore recommend eating a variety of foods.
Try to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as carbohydrates (cereal, bread, pasta or rice), dairy products and fish.
It is also wise to avoid unhealthy fats, sweets and processed foods.
Physical activity: get up and move!
It is never too late to start training. Physical activity is important to prevent a sedentary lifestyle. The three signs of good physical health are strength, flexibility and balance. Working on these three factors makes healthy aging a lot easier.
Walking, dancing or practicing a different sport helps us maintain a healthy body weight. In addition, it reduces the risk of diseases such as diabetes or hypertension. In addition, it improves your self-image and increases your sense of personal well-being.
Hygiene and appearance
To be healthy old, the right personal hygiene is essential. Good hygienic habits and hydration are both very important. Daily showering, brushing your hair, brushing your teeth and maintaining your clothes have a lot of influence on your self-image and how others see you.
Taking care of yourself and your physical appearance is important. It increases your self-esteem and reinforces the idea that you have to take care of your body in every area. Do not forget that your appearance is the first thing that others see of you!
Social life: step outside!
Retiring, children living far away or the death of friends and relatives can lead to much loneliness in the elderly. It is therefore important to avoid social isolation as we age.
Stay active, sign up for workshops or courses, take part in group activities or go to meetings. This will all help you to create a sense of belonging and well-being. In addition, it improves your self-confidence and increases your chances of healthy aging.
Mental activities
Number games, crossword puzzles and memory tests are simple ways to train your brain. These kinds of activities or similar activities help our brains to stay sharp as we age.
Getting older does not mean we have to stop learning. Intellectual activities help to keep our minds strong to very old age.
"Old age is like climbing a mountain. You climb from a ledge to a ledge. The higher you get, the more tired and breathless you become, but your insights become more extensive. "
-Ingmar Bergman-
It is important to train your brain as if they were muscles. Maintaining our cognitive skills is a very important factor in getting healthy old.

Tommy, great post. We need to keep all areas of our lives in tune, maybe not like in our youth. But we need to stay active.
Have you heard anything about being around children, their youth rubs off? I had a friend who said Gandhi kept children around him.
Go WA,
David
Hi David,
I am closing, into 60 years, and still working out 6 times per week some days even twice per day. And feeling good when I have more stamina as the younger people in the gym.
I don't have grandchildren, but notice how much pleasure my friends have when they have them around. I think any social activity is great for your wellbeing.
Have a great day
