When I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis a few months ago, it became necessary to quit the part-time job that I had recently taken for the purpose of meeting new people and making some money for a vacation. The physical labor, although not very heavy, was exacerbating my symptoms. Not only that, but I could see that my "real job" was also contributing to my pain and that I would need to replace it as soon as possible.

As I began researching my condition and looking for career options, it became apparent that I would probably qualify for disability benefits which did not appeal to me. Additional research revealed that there are not many options for someone in my situation.

Here's where I was:

• Everything I did for more than twenty minutes made my body hurt.
• I did not have any marketable skills.
• I did not have any money to invest in education in order to gain new skills.
• I wanted to stay active.

Specifically, I wanted to find a free training program that would enable me to replace my income without having to apply for disability benefits.

How an Annoying Pop-up Ad Changed My Life

After several days of researching, I was getting discouraged. There was just nothing out there! Not only that, but my neck was hurting and my hand was numb from spending so much time on the computer.

That's when a pop-up ad appeared, offering people with disabilities an opportunity to work from home, at their own pace, utilizing their current resources and abilities. Huh. As much as I detest pop-up ads, I was desperate enough to click.

Not That Again!

The ad led to "free" training that promised to teach me how to create a website that would generate income. I knew where this was headed. Free training is bait designed to hook you into signing up for additional training that is going to cost hundreds, of not thousands, of dollars. Been there. Done that.

Although I had always dreamed of living a laptop lifestyle, I had tried blogging for money before and didn't get very far. Within the first two months of creating my website, right when I was starting to pick up some momentum, I was blocked from accessing my account with no explanation. So ended that fantasy.

Nevertheless, I had benefited from free training in the past, sometimes even opting to purchase additional training. It doesn't hurt to take a look and purchasing additional training is not required.

A Glimmer of Hope

That click led me to Wealthy Affiliate, where there were promises that seemed too good to be true. There were free lessons that promised to prepare participants to earn money online and the free program included two free websites. This was certainly worth a try. I had nothing to lose but a few hours of my time and training is never a waste of time.

The training was impressive!

I hadn't gotten very far into it when I knew without doubt that this was exactly what I needed! Little did I know how little I knew the first time I tried to create a profitable website! As I had suspected, there was also an opportunity to upgrade but I ignored that possibility and continued to progress in my free training.

When You Want Something Bad Enough

We've all heard the cliche, "Where there's a will, there's a way". As I progressed through the training I knew that this was my chance to get out of the rut I was in. Here was an opportunity to better myself as a human, help other people, and make money all rolled into a tidy little package.

Suddenly that money that I had set aside for a future vacation didn't seem quite as important. After all, once money started to flow in life would become one long vacation! I decided to jump in and purchase the Premium membership for one year. It's not necessary to pay a whole year in advance but it's the best deal and I like deals.

Even Better Than I Thought

As soon as I upgraded to Premium, I started getting messages from members of the community that welcomed me and offered support. Absorbed in my training, I ignored them and quietly wished the distractions would go away. I'm not much of a "community" kind of person and I was happy doing my own quiet thing in my own quiet way.

It didn't take long and I got stuck on something in the training so I detoured over to "live chat" and asked for help. Woah! Instant answer! That was cool! I thanked my helper and went on my way.

A few days later, I noticed that little gray strip at the top of my screen. "Need help Theresa?" The next time I got stuck I started to type my question in the box and discovered a whole new world of learning! Not only had someone previously asked the very same question, but members of the community had created tutorials that provided answers. Some were in video format, others were blog posts, and my favorite format which is step-by-step written instructions with screen shots to show the way.

I Must Be Dreaming

The community in Wealthy Affiliate is amazing! How could I resist? Not only are they available to answer questions and to encourage, but I am learning so much more than how to make money online.

If you are new to Wealthy Affiliate or if you are an outsider looking in, you may not know at some point in the training we are given an opportunity to look over other member's websites and read their posts. What an amazing hodgepodge of people there are in this program!

Through other member sites, I have learned even more about making money online. I have also learned, on a member site, how to make money by spending regular time reviewing my spending plan and looking for ways to cut back. I have also acquired an abundance of information about all sorts of unrelated topics because people blog about all sorts of things. Reading other member's blogs has become one of my favorite pastimes.

I have made some great new friends, too! Some of them share my interests, some are mentors, and others are people that I am able to help out in some way.

There's So Much More to Discover!

As of this post, I have been involved with Wealthy Affiliate for less than three months. I have completed the starter training program and have gained incredible, life-changing skills yet I have only just begun to learn! There are classrooms that I haven't even stepped into. New training is uploaded daily. People are constantly sharing their light-bulb moments which give me light-bulb moments, too. Not only that, but there's a whole second training course that I haven't even looked into!

A Brighter Tomorrow

As a Premium member of Wealthy Affiliate, I have completely changed my outlook on life. I know that success is within my grasp if only I put in the effort to get there. It's not going to be handed to me but I have been given the tools I need to get there.

Once you step through the gate, you will be handed a road map that tells you exactly which routes will lead to success and which ones lead to failure. It'll even point out the dead-ends. There are many, many directions in which to detour and they all lead to money-making opportunities.
