Some Essential Niche And Content Myths Busted

I was always taught when choosing a niche to choose a big niche with big problems and lots of solutions. Despite the fact that that was in the last century I do think that that premise still stands with some provisos. Recently, I have been investigating Google trends and you may find the above diagram interesting.

It just shows that whilst there are a lot of people interested in digital marketing there are far more people interested in nutrition. In fact, it could be argued that everybody is interested in nutrition. It also could be argued that everybody wants to earn more money, but how many people go so far as to do anything about it. Equally, a lot of people who don't care about nutrition won't even look at it but then they won't be in these figures at all.

I started researching nutrition because of my new blog which I mentioned here I am absolutely shocked at that result. Whilst I do have several blogs about healthy nutrition, vegetarianism, veganism and organic eating I would have considered a lot more. The lesson I have learnt from this is to keep doing research because things do change.

Writing Powerful Headlines

whilst everybody tells you this very few people tell you how to do it. I can only tell you what has worked for me consistently over the last 20 years.

  1. Putting a number in the headline or using a negative. By this I mean "11 Best ways to achieve change today. Don't buy product X until you read this. Don't ask me why but when I write with an odd number I get a higher reader rate. From the top of the head and with nothing to back this up,I would suggest it adds to the quirkiness. If any of you have a more scientific explanation please feel free to share
  2. I have found that headlines which contain words which are spelt differently in American and British English have a lower reader rate. I therefore avoid writing a headline with the word colour in it or color.
  3. Avoid headlines that have words with multiple meanings. This just adds to confusion especially if English isn't your reader's first language
  4. I have also found the headlines work best when they have six or seven words in, again seven is an odd number seems to work best! You may notice that the title of this has got seven words in it, although to be fair I don't spend as much time crafting a headline here
Creating Great Content

My number one recommendation here is that you write content that is useful for the whole of the year and for years to come. That doesn't mean I don't write about trending content such as Christmas gifts or holiday ideas, but when I do I make sure it's not applicable to just one year.

The reason for this is that it takes a lot of time and effort to create good authority content and you want it to be relevant for as long as possible

.This is an example of great content
It is applicable anywhere in the world,it can be shared across niche is because it is just as valuable for people who want a more sustainable lifestyle.

Creating Consistent ContentTo be fair I think this is more important than great content. It was certainly a factor I
underestimated when I started blogging. It was only when I started writing content every day new blogs that I realised how powerful consistency was. I do understand, that the majority of people haven't got the time to post an article every day. However, that doesn't stop you being consistent with your posts.

If you post one article a week then post it every week on the same day and at the same time, if you don't think this makes any difference try for yourself and see what happens.

Using Organic Traffic

Blogging is important for SEO if you want to increase visits to your website. But, if you are already posting valuable content, it might benefit you to go back and update that content, especially if after a little while, you want to give certain posts a boost. You may want to revisit all posts when you learn something new.

Blog post traffic is compounding, which means it gains organic results over time. This is why updating posts are important. This gives you more reads, more recognition, and hopefully more loyal subscribers which will become customers.

Catherine, I sure appreciated your down to earth tips to help attract more readers. And keep them coming back too.

The negative title is not intuitive. Thanks for sharing how to do that.

Your tips on writing powerful headlines are priceless.

It was only recently I understood that when researching keywords with a number in front, it is best to start of without the number to see what the stats are in Jaaxy. And if that is good, then add the number in the title. Meaning the keyword can be embedded in the title. When I did my research with the number added I got terrible results and wondered how that worked. I now know the answer.

Writing content consistently is a no brainer. But publishing it on the same day and same time is brilliant.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

Cheers.

Edwin

Thank you Edwin and glad that you found it helpful. Yes as you have concluded from the hard knock of experience when you do keyword research about numbers and article titles you do it without the numbers.
So 11 best vegetable curry recipes will have zero result. On the other hand best vegetable curry recipes will reveal the result.

I'm going to write more articles using numbers as well as the negative approach and see what happens.

Thanks.

Edwin

Essentially Edwin that the only way you'll know whether it works for you

Awesome post, Catherine.

My thoughts on why negatives and numbers in headlines result in a higher readership:

I think negatives arouse curiosity (readers want to know the "do-s" and "don't-s", the "why-s" and "why not-s"; while numbers give them some sort of direction and tell of precision (people get more interested when they see some kind of "table of contents".) Just my thoughts.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes I think you are right it adds to the curiosity and value

Thank you for sharing this excellent information!

I never thought about the negative impact of using words that contain different meanings in a headline - that makes so much sense!

A few weeks ago I began taking a closer look at the first posts I published - oh my... how they need an upgrade / update / up-everything!

However, from these early posts I have discovered a few gems - ideas that can be used to create content with a little different point of view and hopefully, greater interest. As you mentioned, as you learn something new, adding this information is an excellent way to update an older post - something I'm trying to do more often.

For those with "writer's block", a re-visit to an older post may be the spark of inspiration you need to get writing again!

Writing is so hard when you first start, but the more you practice the easier it becomes. As you learn and interact more your mind opens to new possibilities. By all means, go ahead and improove your content. Believe me the ones who are most successful here are the ones that do that often

Thanks for a great informative post, Catherine.

The part about headlines is more profound than most people think (or like to think).

It requires loads of effort to push out a great headline. But it's worth it, considering 80% of people are either drawn in or click off, (the 80/20 rule coming into effect).

Tip: Rule of thumb, Headline grabs attention.
Next sentence is constructed to get people to read the following sentence. And on it goes 'till the call to "Action".

And as you're aware... Inertia is the antithesis to our protagonist...
Not unlike moving a massive rock. Once it gets moving, our job is to keep it rolling.

You could say it's like someone going to the gym. Their main goal is to lose weight and tone their body.

As an expert instructor, we use our skills to help them the best way possible in achieving their desires.

What says you?

Cordially
Dedo

I would say Dedo that the 80/20% Pareto principle is probably very profound in this argument. I had forgotten when I read the article years ago I read that 80% of people never get beyond the headline

This is a very interesting post. I am intrigued by the numbers ... I wonder why uneven numbers attract more readers, perhaps because it looks more genuine, as if the writer found exactly that number of points? Who knows ...
I will certainly pay attention to your tips. I am having trouble with writing articles every day, but that is mostly due because of lack of electricity. I do publish every week, twice when possible, or more.

it doesn't have to be every day but it does have to be consistent as I say

Thanks! Yes, I think I am consistent :-)
