Hi,
I'm always working to improve my blog writing skills and am just now pondering the ingredients that go into making great blog posts.
I'd love to hear about
Which blogs have helped and inspired you the most?

You pretty much have answered your question almost by yourself. It is a combination of all you asked.
What I do for my niches is to do regular keyword research when I have a specific blog on my mind and check what is already out there.
Yes, I do read some of them, but it doesn't really has an impact on my style of writing. This is a personal thing I would say and copying a writing style which doesn't is YOU, will reflect somehow in your blogs.
That doesn't mean of course you can't take it something on, which you might feel is a good idea, style etc.
In Kyle's training tutorial he mentions how to start, get acquainted with your niche of expertise and see what is out there and how to write awesome content.
If you never have written or blogged anything before, it sure may take a while to find your mojo. Just be patient, trust me when I say it does will come to you in time.
If you like to find some inspiration for your niche and like to read blog about it I suggest to take a look at www.quora.com
this is also a great question and answer style platform for almost anything you can imagine.
All the best to you
Sylvia
I agree with all that you said about ways of developing and improving writing.
Perhaps I didn't express it clearly, but I was really interested to get specific examples of blogs that people read and learn from and to discover some of the common factors that go into making them great.
Many thanks for your insights. :)
