How hurting my eye helped me focus

This is my first ever blog post here at Wealthy Affiliate. I have several more technically oriented posts in mind, but this came to my mind today from two things that have happened lately. One is my personal one and another that has to do with WA in general.

About a week ago I hurt my eye a bit in the forest. A spruce branch hit me in the eye while walking down a narrow path. After a while I started feeling like I have something in my eye, while when I looked I couldn’t find anything. The eye must have gotten a hit and that caused the unpleasant feeling. It got better in a few days, but yesterday the nasty feeling came back when I was walking. I didn’t do anything or hit anything this time, so the eye wasn’t properly healed and I have to take it easy and keep the eye closed as much as possible and avoid bright lights.

To the second observation. I’m a relatively new member here, less than two months at the time of writing. I’ve loved the community and the training. Being a part of a great community makes me thrive. It’s something that is natural to me and gives a lot of happiness. Finding the WA community has been amazing.

As many people have now been worried about their rank after the new ranking system update, it has made me think. I’m sort of a achievement junkie myself. I mean that I like having steps to complete that give me a ”stamp of completion” after I have finished them. That is a way that makes me do things. In that sense the ranking system and badges work great!

(Personally, when the new system came, my rank didn’t change, not even one step I think.)

But this is not a blog post about ranking, or eyes. Those are just just things that made me started thinking about FOCUS.

When an unexpected change happens, it forces us to change how we look at things and what we do. When I hurt my eye, I can’t sit 12 hours a day in front of a computer. If I’m lucky and can work for some hours, I have to choose what I want to concentrate on.

Will that be reading what other people have done or have to say on Facebook, browsing news websites or other numerous services with ”important” information that I have to know about right now as it happens?

If my rank drops here at WA, will I be worrying about it or will I start working on my websites again instead?

What is that ONE THING that will take me closer to my actual goals? What is the next step that I can take NOW that will lead me to where I want to go?

That is the power of focus.

When I hurt my eye, I was very angry. I felt that the universe had betrayed me and was trying to prevent me from reaching my goals. But yesterday, when the eye started to show symptoms again I tried to see it differently. What good can I get out of this? Have I been focusing well before this happened and have I been making progress towards my goals as well as I could have. I had to admit that I hadn’t.

If you feel too that you have been focusing on wrong things and haven’t made progress, why not take a few minutes and write down what your goals are. Then, what are the next steps that you can do, even today, that will take you closer to your goals?

Sanna

PS. You can do this!

Me likey!..

That's great to hear! :)

Excellent message! Re-access your goals and get back to the tasks that will help you attain them.

Happy to hear that you liked it. Thank you!

Love the photos and the message...certainly one I needed to hear. I think my focus can improve if I have more specific goals and some kind of accountability. Thanks for the push in that direction. Debbie

Thank you Debbie, I'm happy to hear that it was something you needed at the moment. Yes, accountability can help a lot if you have good people nudging you to the right direction. :)

make lemonade out of lemons

That's true Mark! :)

Interesting photos---don't ignore that eye --hope it heals soon. Let's all reach our goals....

John

Thank you John! I'll try to take care of myself. :)

Hi Sanna,
good post thanks for sharing and caring.

Thank you, I appreaciate that!

Good reflection Sanna. Focus not only on the physical eye but through the mind that works for it.

Exactly Jimmy! It's funny how phyiscal and mental things often mirror themselves like this. :)

First and foremost, please be careful and take care your eyes! I enjoyed your post (nice pics by the way) ... yes ... focus so difficult at times with all the distractions surrounding us. However sometimes these distractions can serve good purpose. There are many credible scientific research papers demonstrating that most, if not all, our most inspiring creative ideas arise when we are in "distracted places". In short in places where we let "concentrated focus" slip a little, perhaps allowing new disjointed ideas enter and collide; spark together, and create a new flame of ideas!
Sometimes we kinda "beat ourselves" up a little - trying to stay rigid in focus & purpose, and miss out on those important times we need to "muse & wander" in our minds, and discover inspiring new things, concepts, ideas and solutions!
Kind regards
Richard

Thanks for your comment Richard! Yes, I agree with you completely. I hope my post didn't give the impression that I encourage rigid focusing and would not appreciate taking it easy.

I have a very soft and allowing approach to life.

I personally know very well how much taking it easy, relaxing and letting the mind wonder helps our minds to come up with creative ideas. I'm also familiar with the opposite, knowing how much harm working too hard can do and how it blocks creativity.

My point in this post was that if someone feels that they are not getting closer to their goals and that is causing distress, it might be a good time to refocus. I have had a lot of problems keeping focused myself in the past, but have been trying to find ways that help me getting back on track. It can be a real problem if you can't get to your goals that you have been wanting to reach even for several years.

So, I hope everyone will find their own way of getting to where they want to go, and within a timeframe that works for them.

Yes, you are so right.
Richard
